I'm by no means a fan of Windows 8 but nobody is forcing you to download ad supported apps if you hate them so much. It's really that simple. Not to mention the fact there have been desktop apps on Windows since for ever which have ads in them. Windows Live Messenger anyone?

You're complaining about something that's been around for a while now acting as if it's something new.

I do not like Metro (Metro apps included obviously)...but I hardly find this troublesome. If you download a free program that is ad supported...well...buy the dang program without the ads. Simple as that.

Now, if they put ads in paid programs or the default Metro (weather, stocks, etc) apps .... different story.

Freakin' ads to be placed in metro apps....(can this **** get any worse...???)

[. . .]

I know! I mean, imagine us developers actually wanting to be paid for our work. It's ridiculous, isn't it?

It's as simple as the following: We either sell our software or we place ads in our software. Ads have been evident in a lot of free software for years: MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger, Kazaa etc. It's accepted by many that ads are fine in web applications (e.g. Neowin), so why do some of those same people feel ads shouldn't be included in other apps? :s As I mention, it's understandable that us developers would like to be paid for our work, and it should also be understandable that we'd like to make a profit.

Only the iOS App store, not the OS X app store. iAd at least is an iOS-only thing at this point.

Microsoft are being innovative and doing something before Apple. That's a good thing, in my opinion, especially considering how much Apple got to before Microsoft :) Apple will likely include this at some point.

And that's exactly why I didn't use MSN-Messenger-Kazza because its all crapware that I refuse to run on my computer. As far as getting paid for your apps I would really hope developers have a day job and not rely on apps to pay the bills. People aren't going to pay money for this stuff when they can get it for free most of the time.

Possibly. I find it funny/sad though that lately with every controversial decision Microsoft takes, the excuse that is given is claiming that either Apple is doing it already or Apple will surely be doing it as well in the future.

not a fanboy, i hate Metro like most of people like you, but even i can see that like every app store, Windows 8 will have free ad supported apps too. Apple store have them, Android marketplace have them, and if some developers implant same thing in Metro apps, its MS fault. Yeah right. The title and OP's post sounds more like a flame bait.

That's all i is. They think by rallying here they are actually going to change Microsoft's stance about Metro or the OS in general, but are to stupid to realize that Microsoft doesn't care and is going to do what they want to. I don't understand why people have to constantly bitch about something they have no intention of ever using. Stay with 7, go with Linux/BSD or buy a Mac, just quit creating stupid posts on why Metro and Windows 8 sucks. Its crowding the forums.

I just think it makes sense for Apple to do it :) I'm defending Microsoft here because I don't think they've done anything wrong, and as a developer who would like to make as much money as possible, I actually appreciate this change.

^ Hope you are right

I hope they are right also, so Microsoft will be forced to quit putting out operating systems, that way everyone can buy a Mac and get Apple's market share through the roof, and enable them to do the exact same thing, or god forbid, cause Linux to be more popular.

Their job and living is software development. Some of these apps aren't just made by developers in their spare time; many of these apps are developed by someone who has created their own company in which they create these apps, solely, full-time, in order to make money. Even those who use their spare time to create apps deserve to be paid for the time they've invested. Ads being implemented does not automatically make software "crapware." Can't you ignore the ads? That's what I do.

If you pay for the OS then there shouldn't be any ads. So here is my 2 cents worth. Give away a free version of W8 OS that has ads, or sell W8 OS with no ads or whatever else they have embedded to track your surfing habits. Obviously MS has failed with Bing and couldn't compete with Google so there going about it this way to raise revenue.

Funny thing, I wouldn't be surprised if MS offered a free ad-supported version of "8" in the future once "8" completely bombs on the desktop.

They should give the W8 away for free then if they are going to be plastering billboards all over. This is ridiculous

Why? what does WIN8 have to do with an add inside free apps? I have no problem with this at all, it's a choice; you buy the app and no adds, you choose the free version and get adds..

Starting to dislike MS even more these days.

First it was xbox, throw ads in for silver AND GOLD members, make it hard to cancel gold subscriptions too... Then kinect adverts, errr?

AFAIK the PS3 online is free and doesn't have adverts.

Now they're shoving them into the main OS? Wow, W8 has just been removed off my list of things to try.

That still doesn't solve the problem of developers not being paid for the apps they create. Further, how far do you think this should go? You've just implied that merely because you pay for the operating system, you shouldn't have to see ads in software that isn't even created by the same company as that operating system. Websites are software, so do you also believe you shouldn't have to see any ads on websites, merely because you've had to pay for your operating system? Where does it end?

Are you thick or something? The OS isn't injecting ads into random apps. App developers can use Microsoft's ad service to support their apps instead of charging you for the app. This is no different from how Android apps or iOS apps include ads. This is also no different then current windows based apps using a 3rd party advertisement agency to include ads in their apps. Again, let me repeat this for you, the operating system, Windows 8, does not inject ads into apps.

You do realize that this isn't an OS thing right? Seriously, are you and your pals in this thread so blind? This is an app with adverts - one of many that will be available in the Store. Just like every other platform out there, app devs will have the option to add adverts to the apps they create. It was something expected and something that has been done since the first ad showed up on some iOS app. Blaming an OS for something like this proves how ignorant ("lack of knowledge") some of you are.

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 changelog: Added 'Reset to recommended' button for the Options. General fixes and improvements. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
