If you do install the Media Center pack and you are on a desktop, you might find your computer randomly waking itself from sleep or hibernate at a certain time of the day. If this happens, be sure to modify the mcupdate_scheduled task:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979878 (note: for Windows 7, but also applies to Windows 8)

In particular, untick the "Wake the computer to run the task" option under the Conditions tab.

This has been happening to me since installing the MC pack, though the Power-Troubleshooter event wasn't too helpful as it pointed the wake source to "unknown."

Do not change the trigger if you plan to leave your media center logged on all the time or the task will never run.

Shouldn't disabling the wake timers in the power options fix that?

Wake timers were already disabled. Also checked the BIOS for anything that would wake up the PC and disabled the network card's magic packet wake.

Does the media center pack still change the desktop with that silly water mark "windows 8 media center build 9200" or whatever or was that legacy code from people who may have upgraded from pre RTM?

It appears for a few seconds (or a minute) after the Media Pack is installed, then disappears.
