Rumor turns true as Spotify hikes Premium subscription prices in the US

The time has come when you"ll need deeper pockets to keep using Spotify. The Sweden-based music streaming giant has announced yet another price hike for its Premium subscribers living in the US, Estonia, and Latvia.

Spotify announced it will start emailing users over the next month about the upcoming change. The price of Spotify Premium is being increased from $11.99/mo to $12.99/mo for the Individual plan, effective on the respective billing date in February.

The company"s official website has been updated to reflect the latest price hike. It will charge the following fee for its Premium plans:

  • Individual: $12.99/mo (up from $11.99/mo)
  • Duo: $18.99/mo (up from $16.99/mo)
  • Family: $21.99/mo (up from $19.9/mo)
  • Student: $6.99/mo (up from $5.99/mo)

While the price hike might disappoint many users, it was expected for the past few months. An earlier report, citing people familiar with the matter, said Spotify will increase its prices in the US in the first quarter of 2026.

Before this, the music streaming giant raised its US prices back in June 2024, pushing the Premium Individual plan from $10.99/mo to $11.99/mo. These price hikes are mostly driven by mounting pressure from major record labels, who argue that it"s hard to keep up with inflation at current prices.

Spotify"s rival, Apple Music, increased its prices back in 2022, raising the individual plan from $9.99/mo to $10.99/mo. While it sounds like a cheaper deal, it"s said Apple is facing similar pressure from record labels and may need to increase its prices.

"Occasional updates to pricing across our markets reflect the value that Spotify delivers, enabling us to continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists," Spotify said. The latest increment in the US comes months after Spotify hit users in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific.
