I'm wrong?! Well, I'm sure disappointed that I'm not smart enough to learn that enter trick myself! Glad they made it obvious. :)

The slide with your mouse should not even be available in the desktop, it's useless and clear that it's designed for touch first, then ported to desktop with keyboard and mouse. It's an awful unintuitive design that yes I can learn and use since I can adapt but people like my partner and parents have absolutely no chance with this. Everything is too hidden to clean things up to be intuitive.

Metro is useless on PC, they could have done so much better for us, you only have to look around at Longhorn concepts and user concepts of Windows. Windows 8 is just a desperate jump at the mobile market that is dominated by iPhone and iPad.

Or you could just start typing your password without sliding up or pressing enter. Genius right? :woot:

I don't see the majority of developers making two versions of their software. Why invest time making a Metro version of your software when you don't know whether people will embrace it. Metro isn't going to become the primary application type because it is so limited in functionality and for even moderately savvy computer users Metro apps just won't cut it. I've yet to find a single Metro app I would actually ever use. I have a huge collection of desktop apps which do exactly what I want and are feature-rich - there's no way that could all be replicated into Metro. I imagine Metro apps will be limited to small, quirky and basic apps - essentially their equivalent of the Apple App Store and designed primarily for Tablet or WOA users.

That's because it's still in beta. Seriously, do you think companies will set aside a group of devs and resources (e.g. time) to code their applications into metro apps when we are months away from release?

Nope working fine here.

Though I rarely use 'em.

It's very annoying. I'm sure they were working yesterday (at least, the show desktop one was) and now they're not. Going to restart again and see if that fixes the issue. It could also be a conflict with Mouse Without Borders, which I'll try and rule out too.

No, I'm not expecting a comprehensive suite of apps at this stage (or even post-release), the apps in the CP give a sample of the kind of tasks, apps MS seem to think could be done from the Metro UI. I was making the point that of all the various types of apps we've seen there's nothing I'd want to use. Everything I do on my computer would work better and be more productive on a proper desktop app than some basic, dumbed-down Metro app that is removed from the desktop UI. Now if I could open a Metro app in a maximise/minimise/resizeable-able window within the desktop UI then maybe I'd find some worth using. For example I use a great Twitter client called MetroTwit. That is a desktop application in a Metro style and it's really productive precisely because it runs on the desktop. If I had to switch over to the Metro UI every time I wanted to glance at at app I simply wouldn't use it as it would be too unproductive and the UI would get in the way..

Has anyone come across any solutions to making the audio work from the on-board speakers? The sound will play fine from headphones when they are plugged in but no sound at all through the on-board laptop speakers (Dell Vostro 1400)

Any solutions for a fix so far?

To update, it's an issue with Mouse Without Borders. At least partly. The switch to desktop command works if I use the Laptop keyboard but not my main keyboard. However, snapping metro apps still doesn't work, regardless of which keyboard I use.

In Cut The Rope metro app, the air cushion or whatever it is whenever clicked causes a lag to anyone else?

It didn't worked for me either. And neither did in Developer Preview

it just swapped opened apps in wdp , and now gives the left side bar. That old vista/7 thingy is removed.

uninstall and reinstall firefox

heard that from another related thread

don't quote me for this

I had the same problem, but it happened when I set firefox with all the defaults, Immersive IE 10 disappeared, set it back to IE 10 with all the defaults and it came right back...nice so you can't choose to have another browser as default without losing the ability to use the immersive browser...

Can someone explain to me how messenger works in Win8CP?? I don't really have much ppl on it anymore(seems that everybody asks for your skype) but I'm just curious to know how do you know when you get a message in desktop mode when there's no icon for it now in the taskbar???

yes . WindowsDP behaved in same way. BTW to have them both , u can first set IE as default ,then change default for .htm etc to firefox. This way u have Immersive browser as well as firefox as default browser.

If you have problems with Firefox Nightly , then today's update will fix them.

BTW If you pin a .exe file to Start , and right click to it in start menu ,and click open file location. It leads to some internal folder and takes you to the shortcut of that .exe which is misleading.

there is no notification like that. However u would see recent notifications in live tiles of People app etc. Currently notification are for app installations/ change in some setting etc.

Soooo.... I have to keep switching between desktop and metro to know if someone is talking to me???

My proccy is running @ 100% all the time even when in balanced mode. However if i choose "Maximum Power State" in power options and set it to 0% or <100% then coolnquite mode activates as i can see. Can anyone help me coz this doesn't seem the legitimate way...

Technically the metro messenger can support push notifications, but it doesn't look like they've gotten round to adding it in yet to the preview app. Or you can just use the desktop Windows Live Messenger if you want to live on the desktop, it installs perfectly fine. Or snap the metro messenger to the side.

If you clean installed 8 you might need to install the proper chipset drivers rather than the generic ones Windows uses.

that's what MS wants you to do. Desktop is now considered as an metro app. Opening a .png pic takes you to Photos app and playing .mp3 to Music. You can't just stay at desktop without changing settings/tweaking...

but yes , they should add this feature. Even for mail , people and other apps

Yes i did. Umm drivers for proccy ?

You can use current windows live messenger, Trillian, Pidgen or whatever you want in desktop mode if you want to stay in desktop mode. If you're in Metro apps, then I find pinning the metro messenger to the right side of the screen works well.. can even pin the desktop to use remaining estate and switch back and forth easily between the two

I am not able to update windows defender with latest definition. Each time it is failing with Code 80070666. Any body else facing similar issue? I tried cleaning s/w distribution folder but no luck..

I'm not entirely sure which drivers, I just went to my manufacturers support section for my computer and downloaded all the drivers they had there, one of them done the trick :p But processor / chipset drivers sounds about right.

When I open mail it only shows 1 email..... that seems very wrong.

close it (drag thingy or alt+f4) then try again. Else delete accounts then add again.

btw where is that SkyDrive folder where u can drag and drop to upload?
