  1. 1. Why are you less active than you used to on the Neowin forums, or what prevents you from being more active?

Usually you're amongst the highest quality contributors on here, so please, step it up again and don't let the butthurt people annoy you for speaking freely and most of the time sensibly.

Thanks :D I'll post more frequently and lurk less.

Glassed Silver is right, I wonder why you haven't been slapped with +MVC status yet.

This is perhaps not a bad idea. If the gaming sections' individual subsections are deserted, why not merge them into the main Gamers Hangout section? Console specific threads can simply be prefixed as such (e.g "[Wii U] Super Mario Galaxy 3"), much like threads in other sections are prefixed.

I'll take a look..

I think a whole a lot of regular posters, don't do it any more. Like me! I used to have several posts a day, and now I hardly post.

I have been pretty busy, and occupied by other stuff. But now that I have more free time, I intend to be more active.

And also, I voted for the option: "Member y should be on staff. I'm not coming back until (s)he is promoted.".

Not that I won't come to Neowin till he isn't the staff member, but I strongly think that Hum should be on the moderating staff. He has given so much to this community, and he single handedly runs the entire Real World News section. He deserves something back. There is no other person who has done more for this community.

And he really is 'moderator material'.

(And also add Mephistopheles to that list.)

im less active than i used to be back in 2001, i think back then i was soo crazy about every little bit of beta news about XP i was glued. i don't find the euthasim the same for upcoming rls's (probably just me though)

We try, but it's much harder to organize than you might think

Maybe we could do some Kickstarter product reviews?

I've invested into the HAND stylus and they just sent out samples to various papers and tech blogs (NY Times, TUAW, The Verge, etc...)

- i blame microsoft! no joke! some mentioned earlier that years ago you could get very good technical tips and tuts. i remember i found neowin when i was looking for visual styles for windows xp. found a LOT of amazing ones here, even better than on deviantart. then came vista and visual styles were gone (thanks microsoft and their joke of aero)

others than that? always been more of a reader, except in the f1 section and politics (if there is an election year :p)

No offense to Hum, but no, he really isn't "moderator material". He's more of a news posting bot than anything. We tried to give him something back years ago and renamed "Real World News" to "The Daily Hum". Then he left us high and dry for something like a year.

Also, Meph is already an ex-staffer (not that I'd be against him being staff again).

Personally i've slowed to a crawl due to the amount of trolls and the general attitude of a huge percentage of the posters.

Seems people come here when they're in a bad mood so they can flame others, every thread seems to become fodder for opposing fanboi factions to slag off anything and everything.

I still come back here and there are still some brilliant members and interesting threads but i do tend to spend more time on forums with a more mature user base.

That's a great idea.. We can do some sort of monthly giveaway, but how would we vote on best desktop, staff shortlist a few and then members vote? We could also allow members to link to a post in that thread and then just select the person with the most votes?

Maybe the MVC's should vote?

For me I guess it's this:

  • I don't have as much spare time any more.
  • Not too many "new" things to talk about these days.
  • I agree, gaming isn't as fun any more.
  • Some members have turned me off, but I can't put my finger on any of them now.

Still a great forum and one I will visit every couple of days instead of every day now that's all. The forums themselves are better organised though. I agree with all the layout and category changes which have been made over the past and the change in topics (a lot more non-technical ones) is welcomed in my book.

I haven't noticed an increase in trolls in the forums, more in the front page comments. But then it is mainly people trying to out-geek someone else more than often than not.

I guess I'd prefer to see more gadget reviews by members, but I'd like them to be large, not just text. Anything from 99p gadgets to ?199, but perhaps not much more as these days people simply don't have the disposable money to spend like that *shrugs*

I've lurked here for a long time (~2004'ish onwards) though haven't posted much nor am I less active. The only thing that I would say lacking is new active members - I would say this is due to the lack of community focused projects and front page news (in terms of the very inconsistent quality of news posts where some are great, and others are frankly a re-worded copy & paste from hours/days before).

Staff and/or moderation IMO are fine. I remember some years back when the moderation was so strict that it turned me off posting.

Members are generally nice and most would admit if their wrong (unlike some of the comments on certain popular news blogging sites).

I have been on here for a few years now and not posted much

the main reason of this is i see a lot of posts that people post something asking a question (which is asked because they don't know or are unsure) and they get absolutely slated for it

It is for that reason I don't post as frequently because that is most of the content on this forum now. I try to just respond to topics where there is no way what I say can be misconstrued or replied to in a way that would start a flame war but it is difficult because I feel some on here are just looking for an argument constantly. I even made a comment in some lottery ticket topic and someone quoted me and was condescending.

Felt the need to revive this topic and quote myself to illustrate the problem I described. Just look at this thread, http://www.neowin.ne...t__p__594906497

I comment on-topic to the story and this user quotes me and lets out a barrage of swears. It is these kind of hostile posts that just make me not want to reply to anything around here anymore.

forums in a whole are on the down swing everywhere not just here. i don't post much anymore becuase im not fond of some of the responses people seem to get anymore on here. sometimes it border line spam & trolling.

Yeah, forums are down everywhere. I think one reason is for the reason you gave, people on the forums are a tad harsh and normal people don't have time for that nonsense.

I am actually more active now. But I do see there less activity. For me when I first started coming here I was active in changing the looks of my XP machine and skinning. now i really don't care about that. More about photography and techno news. But its still a good community.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

All popular browsers are supported IDM integrates seamlessly into Google Chrome, FireFox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer, Maxthon and all other popular browsers to automatically handle your downloads. You can also drag and drop files, or use Internet Download Manager from command line. The program supports proxy servers, ftp and http protocols, firewalls, redirects, cookies, authorization, MP3 audio and video content processing. IDM includes web site spider and grabber IDM downloads all required files that are specified with filters from web sites, for example all pictures from a web site, or subsets of web sites, or complete web sites for offline browsing. It's possible to schedule multiple grabber projects to run them once at a specified time, stop them at a specified time, or run periodically to synchronize changes. Easy downloading with one click When you click on a download link in a browser, IDM will take over the download and accelerate it. • I am not a US citizen nor a Trump fan. Respect to both left and right. But I will, for the sake of fun, predict something for my own. There will come a day when the US and China will collide like titans ( over Taiwan or anything else ). Then, on that day, some people in this comment section will realize how good an idea it was to become independent in areas like that. ( Or atleast try )
    • Microsoft Edge gets tons of security features, including AI model that can see your screen by Usama Jawad Microsoft Edge may not be the most popular browser out there, but it does receive quite frequent updates that sometimes bring surprising new features and axe others that are not as popular. Now, Microsoft has detailed some of the new security enhancements that it has introduced in Edge for Business, typically used by commercial customers. Microsoft has emphasized that security features are baked into Edge for Business and offer native integration with security and governance tools like Defender and Purview. Browser sessions are governed by default on managed devices but can also be governed through dedicated work profiles on unmanaged devices. An important aspect in this area is controlling the use of shadow AI. We have talked about this before, but it essentially restricts employees from using unsanctioned AI apps through data loss prevention (DLP) policies, with Edge redirecting them to trusted AI services like Microsoft 365 Copilot. This feature, available as a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) license, ensures that confidential data never exits AI boundaries set by your organization in Purview. Additionally, Microsoft also has strong DLP policies for contractors. Contractors leveraging a Entra ID-joined work profile provisioned by their contracting company on a device managed by their actual employer can be restricted from downloading files locally. In such scenarios, the file is saved on the contracting firm's OneDrive rather than being downloaded locally. Another useful Edge security feature disallows copying and pasting from unmanaged locations and apps. Similarly, DLP policies can be configured at a granular level to restrict screenshots or downloading of files from certain locations. In the same vein, IT admins can block the installation of extensions, hosted apps, themes and scripts, and control if users can install extensions from external locations. They can also enable the installation of specific extensions and allow users to request access to certain extensions, so that they can be managed on a case-by-case basis. Finally, Edge for Business now has an on-device AI model that uses computer vision to see what's on your screen and block potentially malicious content immediately. This does not rely on site reputation, as it simply monitors what is being displayed on your screen, which means that it is effective against malicious content that takes over your screen and employs scareware tactics. Since this is an on-device AI model, it does use your system's resources, so it's enabled by default only on devices with at least 2GB of RAM and four CPU cores. You can find more details in the Microsoft Mechanics video here.
