MacBook Pro with Retina display announced

Surely many people who use macbooks use them for just browsing.... word... and that's all apparently.

I use mine for:

Browsing, Document Creation, E-Mail, CRM Access, Server RDP Access, Server SSH Access, Multiple VMs for testing, TeamViewer, iTunes, Web Development, Network Admimistration, SQLite Database Repair, MySQL management, OpenVPN Access, Gaming, MDM Management. Just to name a few tasks that I'm usually performing at the same time on an average day at work.

And when I'm at home: 1080p pr0n, IRC, Minecraft.

So, not just Browsing and Word it'd seem ;)

I bought an IBM box last year that cost 50K and it doesn't even have USB3, hell it doesn't even have USB, the keyboard is connected via PS2. It has no HDMI and the VGA only outputs to a green screen but I can guarantee you it would "smoke" your PC any day of the week. Perhaps you can now see how silly your argument sounds.

50k? Good lord.

I hate the fact they made a new non-backward compatible "MageSafe 2" power adapter.

Err ... it is fully backwards compatible ... it's slimmer and a converter is available. It's slimmer to help the machine be thinner. Don't complain about things that have to be made that way to make it thinner. Ethernet, Magsafe 1 and Optical drive are not there for physical reasons. I'd much rather have the slim and light machine than thicker to have those bits in. If you don't want that and you want those bits, get the normal one :)

I stopped by the Apple store in King of Prussia today and wow. I didn't even get a chance to put my hands on one before hearing 2 people say "Now I need one of these before I leave". Mine will be coming to my office this week, so I just wanted to stop in and see what it was like. It really is a master piece. Bitching aside, Apple really does engineer the **** out of these things. To fit all of that power in such a thin device is mind blowing. The retina screen is beautiful. I can tell what people say about website graphics being low res, but it really isn't that distracting. I really can't wait to get mine on Wed.

Just curious, if yours is coming next week, what time did you order last Monday? Just want to see how far along they are.

Are hi-res graphics coming in Windows 8? Right now, Win7 doesn't look so great on the Retina Display.

Windows 8 should look better since they got rid of all the graphics

That is one issue with previous versions of Windows, at anything other than "96dpi" controls starts looking funny (Stuff misaligned, scaled wrong, etc.) But with Windows 8 everything is just single coloured rectangles, as long as the aspect ratio is correct it'll render the same.

I ordered mine about an hour after they launched last monday. My shipping said 5-7 business days, but it shipped in 4 days.

Yeah, high DPI settings look much better in Win8 vs. Win7, probably because the OS is really designed around touch-based input this time around. I don't have any issues with how Win8 looks, I just hope it's a lot less pixelated at the MBP's new resolution. Of course, it's possible Apple will release some updated Boot Camp drivers that might address the issue.

I also wonder how long it will take for most App Store apps to be updated to take advantage of the new resolution, and if/when generic Web graphics will get optimized, too.

Microsoft have included high DPI glyphs for a while (Even XP had theme resources for a 2x density screen), but you still had the issue that there was little to no screens available to actually test this stuff out, Apple is the first company selling these screens on a large basis.

I can imagine end users screwing this up, it's kinda confusing (Run it at the native resolution with 200% scale, the actual DPI value Windows provides should be ignored). I saw one review where the guy tested Windows on it, at the wrong setting (So everything was too small)

Ugh, I think I'm gonna order one today or tomorrow. I'm really liking it, and all the reviews I've seen have come to the consensus that it's just a really great notebook.

Man, Apple really knows how to separate a man and his money.

$2200 is a TON of money to pay for a machine that's not at all future proof.

true, but $2200 is a lot of money to spend on a computer you think you'll want to upgrade in within a year or so.. i don't think anyone will buy this and then feel like they'll want to upgrade soon, it's just to expensive i don't plan on spending another penny on computers until i want to upgrade to the newer model, which i usually do my macs every 2-3 year.

Holy crap, that's still too expensive for every 2-3 years. For me personally, anyway. If I were to pay that kind of money for a computer, it would have to be on a ThinkPad, or another upgradable machine. I don't want to drop money for a MBA, then find out I want to install Boot Camp or another VM service and find myself short on RAM or HDD Space.

Im so tempted to sell my current laptop and get a macbook air :/

Mine should arrive this coming week. Can't wait.

Agree with you on the 8GB RAM model but with 16GB of RAM and the ability to upgrade the SSD it is pretty future proof.
