MacBook Pro with Retina display announced

Holy crap, that's still too expensive for every 2-3 years. For me personally, anyway. If I were to pay that kind of money for a computer, it would have to be on a ThinkPad, or another upgradable machine. I don't want to drop money for a MBA, then find out I want to install Boot Camp or another VM service and find myself short on RAM or HDD Space.

It's called thinking ahead. I also bought my current iMac with a faster CPU and more memory than I needed back then.

Crank up the DPI

I can, but I prefer to stick with the default DPI, which I believe Windows sets to 96.

Anyway, going to order mine tonight. Base model upgraded to 16 GB RAM. I'll be saving $200 with educational discount, and also get a free ML upgrade and a $100 gift card, so it's actually not a bad price point for me.

Well I am looking forward to those on this thread who have ordered giving their real world experiences once they get this beast.

One thing I'm hoping this will hasten is the death of the cd drive. I have 300 machines which all have cd drives in that have never been used and are a complete waste of time. When we get new machines in they are wiped and reinstalled from USB then software is installed over the network so these drives are never needed yet we have to pay for them. In the old days we could take them out and just pop in a face plate but with the new designs this isn't always possible so we have to lock them down. Now this isn't like the death of the floppy in that USB drives are so cheap - hell I have been given them as business cards, so moving data around should be easy.

I am a bit concerned about the lack of ethernet on board but have the adapter for the MBA so not a huge problem. I understand why Apple don't put one in the box, because they are trying to eliminate giving away anything that won't be used by everybody which is quite green and I approve of. If (hell more likely when) I get one then visiting clients will be fun as I've been telling them to disable wifi on their networks for security reasons (in reality i am just lazy but mention security and you can get away with anything). Time for me to recommend WPA2 and mac address restrictions :)

Edit: ^ WPA2 *and* MAC Filtering? I don't see much point (Using MAC filtering on top of WPA2 is like putting sticky tape over your keyhole and thinking it adds an extra layer of security)

...

Stuff is going to be very, very small then. Text on Neowin would be 2mm tall if you kept the "DPI" at the default scale.

The MAC filtering is more because they would share the password around and connect any old **** to it, at least with MAC filtering we can control this :)

Surprise, mine passed through border security earlier and is schedule for delivery today. I will take some unboxing shots of this beast when it arrives.

So I have spent the last couple of hours with this thing and I love it. I took some photos, but to be honest, it won't show you the true beauty of this retina screen compared to actually sitting next to the thing.

The thing is super thin. It's really amazing to see all this technology and power put into something so thin.

Of course I got the back to school deal..

This is a screen shot of it scaled all the way to the highest resolution, which to me is how I will be working most of the time:

And this is scaled to "Best for Retina" option per Apple:

This is the best shot I could take to hopefully show the retina's clearity of images on the screen:

You can view the rest of the photos I took of the unboxing and any others I decide to take on my Flickr Account. If you have any questions let me know I will try and answer them the best I can.

Nice one

Enjoy your new Macbook pro!

I might be waiting for the 13inch to upgrade my current one. I have a three year old Macbook pro 13inch. Still working great.

I upgraded the harddrive with the 500GB Hybrid and is working great, but I am tempted to get the new one...

Thanks for sharing these photos, blachole. It looks amazing. Although the photos of the Retina screen look impressive, I'm sure you're right in saying that you can only appreciate its true beauty by seeing it yourself.

I'm sure you'll find your MacBook Pro to be an excellent purchase.

    • Free Software Foundation Europe pushes EU to force Google to allow AI uninstalls on Android by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels Users should be able to fully uninstall AI-based features from Android devices and be able to access interoperability functions, free from Google’s verification requirements, the European Commission has heard as part of an Android interoperability consultation under the Digital Markets Act. These measures were proposed by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) last week when it submitted its documentation. The FSFE noted that Google had started silently installing AI models without telling users. It noted that the EU’s DMA requires companies like Google to allow users to uninstall pre-loaded software from their devices, but in the case of the AI models Google is installing, they reinstall if you delete them, contravening the DMA. To get Google back under control, the FSFE has told the European Commission that there needs to be improvements within the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). First, it said that users should be able to fully remove pre-loaded AI components from their devices, with companies being prohibited from silently reinstalling or reactivating them. Second, access to Android interoperability features should not be contingent on registration, authorization, or contractual relationships with Google. This pertains to Google’s attempt to force developers to register with Google, even to publish apps to alternative app stores like F-Droid. Discussing its submission, Lucas Lasota, FSFE Legal Programme Manager, said: Google is planning to roll out its Android Developer Certification in September 2026. This will force every Android app developer to register with Google before their software can be installed on certified Android devices, but it should affect those who have removed Google Apps from their device. The program is controversial because it entails the signing of contracts and payment of account fees to Google, as well as the handing over of the identities of developers. It said: The FSFE said that if the Commission’s draft measures remain unchanged, then Google will be allowed to make developers verify their identity. The FSFE believes that asking developers to register is contrary to the text and spirit of the law. In summary, the FSFE has told the Commission that no developer should need a Google account, a Play Store presence, or any agreement with Google to access Android’s interoperability features.
    • You could disable this "functionality/feature/whatever" with 2 registry keys, ages ago.
