A gaffe is one thing, but a passage in a book is another. In terms of Romney?s international comprehension and competence, consider these words in his campaign tome No Apology: ?England is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn?t make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy.? England? What about Scotland and Wales?which is why the Island nation is called Great Britain. Small roads? Has he ever heard of the motorways?yes, freeways?that stretch the length and breadth of the country outside London? Small houses? This is a childish clich?. And as for exports: How about aerospace, pharmaceuticals, financial services, the creative industries and high tech? (Sir Tim Berners Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web.) ??

How could anyone with presidential ambitions write what Romney did, or let it be ghost written for him? One explanation is that he?s clueless, the other is that he doesn?t care. Either, as Krauthammer might put it, is disqualifying. And Mitt should be relieved that No Apology apparently has no readers in Britain. ??

In fact, that book like his overseas junket, typifies the Romney foreign policy. It largely consists of content-less slogans and a disconnected set of opportunistic and false attacks on the President, coupled with an intention to reinstate the Bush neo-conmen who cratered America?s standing in the world as surely as their domestic counterparts collapsed the American economy. Beyond that there is emptiness?and repeated proof that Romney is without basic knowledge and out of his depth. ??

Thus one of his advisors recently warned that we need to do more to <a href="http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/07/romney-soviet-threat-again.php" style="cursor: pointer; " target="_blank">defend ?Czechoslovakia? from the ?Soviet Union.? Neither country still exists. Romney himself won?t say himself how long he would stay in Afghanistan, and on the issue of a possible conflict with Iran he said in a Republican primary debate: ?You sit down with your attorneys and [they?] tell you what you have to do.? He opposed going into Pakistan to track down terrorists and observed that finding Osama bin Laden wasn?t ?worth moving heaven and earth.? After the bin Laden raid?inside Pakistan?he gave credit to the Navy Seals and begrudged the President who had sent them to kill or capture the mastermind of 9-11. ??

In fairness, he isn't wrong. GB is a small island it's true. And our exports are less than what they were. And by comparison our houses are smaller.

BUT... We have been one of the US's strongest allies both in wartime and politically. He would be well advised to not harbour such thoughts.

Moreover, is he setting out to gain (more) enemies?

What I find amusing is that people like Romney are purportedly educated and that this is a person who want's to be the head honcho of the most powerful country in the world, yet does not seem to understand basic geography! I guess stupid is just stupid!

http://www.telegraph...rdon-Brown.html

The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key.

The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment"....

In more modern times: We have the third largest economy in Europe, are in less debt than the US (in GDP) and actually have politicians that are at least attempting to get us out of debt.

Mitt Romney can shut the **** up.

Haha if he actually means 'England' is a small island then he's obviously as thick as s**t. If he actually means 'The UK' is a small island then yeah it is... but a small island with huge accomplishments that have given a lot to the world.

I'd like to see him run his day to day life without half of the things that Britain has invented (mainly in Scotland).

Romney called the UK an island! Get him, how dare he?

He didn't, he called England an island.

Most Americans don't distinguish between the UK and England even though it puts your panties into a bunch.

Not geographically correct, but we're prone to condensing things to their essence; England dominates the UK, so the UK = England..

I've seen New York on TV the most so New York state must = America... yeah that's good logic.

Nah everyones just from Texas, but they all live in Newyork style housing. Also everything is so big, as a 6"5 Scots man when i went to Newyork, I was considered small. The tour guide was nice tho she let me ride in her shirt pocket when I took the tour.

Also all Mexican`s and Canadian`s are considered "Yanks" to us......

It's the same logic Europeans use when they see crime reports from NYC, Chicago, LA etc and figure that's what the other 98% of the US is like, so yes all sides are guilty.

I guess both side have their idiots and, thankfully, both sides have their educated.

It's just a shame the idiots make most of the noise.

Three of my grandparents are from GB, two of them from Stoke on Trent, one from Sutton area of London. I have been to both areas many times. I don't need a geography lesson from you, thank-you.

What an amazing story you told me there... Please do tell me more... oh wait... nah don't. I couldn't care less about your grandparents.

Phew. I was about to have a panic-attack then.

Mitt Romney is clearly going for the "Stupidest president since Dubya" accolade.

How can he be this stupid? Earlier he quoted financial stats between Palestine and Israel that were wrong by a factor of 10. We might be small but we have the 6th biggest economy in the world and we have a lot of scientific peer reviewed papers published each year(more than China). Together in the EU(everyone puts in finance) we are the leaders in scientific development after taking over the USA back in 1994.

This election is going to be

Regardless of what happens during this years election...the next four (politically) will be the same. More squabble, less getting issues resolved. Granted, this Mitt fellow seems to like offending other countries.

excuse me? a country with the lowest average IQ, poorest education system next to 3rd world countries, with there american made products that even american tv mocks as been cheap and easily broken and he decides to insult us? yes we are a small island but we are one of the most rich and powerful nations you will ever come across... what a douche... england has tons of exports try our people! the only reason you have any one with a half decent IQ or education is because they studied here! or came from here! (or india) I will say say yes the houses you have are huge by comparison (the average house anyway) but so are your people? the only things america has on england is the space, cheap fuel and big portions at McDonalds... there are also tons of things people buy from us my sister is nearly done with her cure for a disease (which i am not allowed to say what one) and you americans are going to pay thousands for it! but wait! us english get it on the NHS OOOOO

Really!?!?! Why is this even a debate in America as to who the choice will be? The Republicans with Bush got you guys into two wars instead of just going after the mastermind who perpetrated the crime. They did not focus on the economy closely enough over 8 years to see that a serious situation was arising in the housing market. Now Romney is calling Americas best friends a bunch of small world people with nothing to offer. Yet he dosent mind that they give big US businesses a lot of money including Mcdonalds and Coca Cola being the big sponsors of the Olympics. When hes not stepping on his friends he is antagonizing Iran and pretty much sending them the message that if they developing nukes its a good time to get them finished and give them to friends to use on the US because he is coming for them with Israel. If I was the insane Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and this was the aggressive rhetoric I had to face I would look for a way to inflict some damage before it came to me. Just listen to Obama for a couple of minutes. This man is, intelligent, positive, and i believe quite an honest politician. He tries to understand people and has a heart. I would follow this man because he would make me feel like whatever I am doing, I would be doing it for the good of the world. Republican voters on Neowin, do you really want a black man out so bad you would put your country in jeopardy. You are a shrinking presence with the rise of China, right now you need as many friends as possible.

I'm pretty sure at this point that he's a clone or George Bush Jr, just with slightly better plastic surgery.

And as far as exports go, I wouldn't boast too much If I were you, since the last time I looked, the US was outsourcing most of its manufacturing to Asia, the same thing Britain did. In time you'll enjoy a virtually non-existent manufacturing base too. At which point, you'll have to dig around for a new insult.

Americans in geography and foreign relationships gaffe shocker.

For such a large country that attempts to control pretty much the entire world, you guys really aren't that well educated, as a whole, if your presidential candidates are anything to go by.

And you wonder why the rest of the world doesn't like America?

    • Google pitches Spanner as one database for all AI agents with these new featues by Karthik Mudaliar Google Cloud is introducing new features within Spanner, its distributed database, as a place where enterprises should keep their data, using which AI agents could make smarter and better decisions. In a detailed blog post, Google highlighted quite a few features coming to Spanner, including relational data, graph relationships, vector search, key-value access, full-text search, and operational analytics together in one database architecture. Google says that today's systems aren't well-made for AI agents. There could be data that is present in one system, search indexes in another, embeddings in a vector database, and relationship data in a graph database. This fragmentation isn't great for AI agents to do their jobs because they don't have access to all of this data in one place. This is where Google is positioning Spanner as a solution. Spanner is already a globally distributed relational database with strong consistency, and Google wants its customers to see it as a broader data layer for AI applications. The company introduced something called Spanner Graph, along with integrated vector search, full-text search, a Cassandra-compatible key-value endpoint, and a columnar engine for analytical queries on operational data. Google also added that its ScaNN-powered vector search can support indexes with more than 10 billion vectors, while the columnar engine can make some analytical scans up to 200 times faster. All of this isn't just exclusive to the Google Cloud Platform, and there's support for multi-cloud as well. This comes via Spanner Omni, which Google says is a downloadable, containerized version of Spanner that can run on Kubernetes and in environments outside Google Cloud, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, and even on-premises infrastructure as well as edge deployments. Google says that customers who are interested in the full-featured edition should contact the company, and there's no word on commercial availability or separate pricing. Those interested can read the full blog by Google Cloud, which details these features individually.

    • They have lots of info on me, I have a facebook account and have done so for years, it was the thing to have then. My phone number is not on it. I don't have the Facebook app on my phone these days, just the messenger part, and only for a couple of people to contact me, most will text me via SMS or phone. I agree, Meta, like others, even without an account will know something about me. Just have to try and keep some things private Also, never saw the need for Whatsapp, people used to ask for me to join it, but as I said to them, I have SMS and a phone, use that, or email
