EDIT:

Things to Know Before You Start

  • The evaluation edition will expire and cannot be upgraded.
  • To upgrade, the evaluation must be uninstalled and a non-evaluation version of Windows must be re-installed from your original installation media.
  • Consider running the evaluation edition in a virtual environment or installing on a separate hard drive or partition. The will allow you to upgrade your original Windows installation to Windows 8.
  • During registration (required) you must login with a Microsoft account and provide your name, e-mail address and country.
  • You are required to activate the product online within 10 days after installing.
  • Once the evaluation is installed, you cannot upgrade. To revert to a previous version of Windows, you must do a clean install from your original installation media.

Activation and Usage Guidelines

  • Back up your files and settings before installing this evaluation and again prior to the 90-day expiration.
  • Upon installation, you will have 10 days to activate this evaluation online. Windows will prompt you to activate. A product key is not required for this software.
  • You must complete activation before August 15, 2013, to use this evaluation.
  • Once you activate, you have up to 90 days to use the software. You can track the amount of time you have left by referring to the "watermark" in the lower right corner of the Windows desktop.
  • If you fail to activate this evaluation within the 10-day grace period, or if your evaluation period expires, the desktop background will turn black, you will see a persistent desktop notification indicating that the system is not genuine, and the PC will shut down every hour losing unsaved work.
  • Following the evaluation period, you will need to replace the operating system on your test computer and reinstall all your programs and data. It is not possible to upgrade the evaluation to a licensed working version of Windows 8. A clean installation is required.

Thanks for the heads up!

Edit:

A note: you have to format once evaluation period is over. You cannot activate it further using KMS or MSDN keys or any other method.

Really? That's...disappointing to say the least.

yeah, there's no activation possible otherwise people would use cracks on this and get a serial fast .iso download and crack it for free. It is nice we get it months before release as they didn't give trials of win7 until several months AFTER win7 was available in shops. Now end users and businesses can legally try win8 before deciding to purchase it or not.

Can this dual boot with Windows 7 like the Consumer Preview, and Release Preview did? I'd hate to hose my Windows 7 install just for an evaluation. My guess it simply cripples Windows one that period is over, and you simply have to reinstall Windows 8 while being able to keep 7.

I haven't tried dual booting myself.. but it's just a normal install of windows that automatically activates against microsoft's servers and has a 90 day timebomb.

The only catch is that after 90 days you'll get the "not genuine" messages and shutdowns and it will necessitate you installing windows again.

Any mirrors or direct links up yet ? Keep getting "An unknown error occurred while processing your request. This is most likely due to a connection failure. Please try again."

TIA

Ditto.... seems the servers a little flooded at the moment processing requests! .... :(

This is an awesome find; I was wanting to test drive Win8 with the new UI before I decided if I would purchase it or not. I pretty much liked the CP, but had skipped the RP due to it not having the revamped UI (which looking at screenshots, it looks abysmal), so this will make for a good test to see if this release is for me or not (or at least until the custom skin community catches up).

You don't need to format to reinstall Windows. You can run Windows setup from within Windows and it will install Windows and move your files in the eval version on a folder called Windows.old

Or you can format the target partition when starting from the install media if you're doing a clean install (all that you need to do is boot from the media - either DVD or USB).

Yes,I have already downloaded and burned Windows 8 RTM 32 bit trial version to a DVD. And I will install it maybe in a few days.

To get the Windows RTM 90 day trial version or evaluation build as it is called, you must have a Microsoft account. And log in to the Technet website to download it.

And also the good news is that Classic Shell,Start Menu 7 and all of the other start menu software works in Windows 8 RTM. So when the time comes to buy Windows 8 we won't have to have the Metro start menu. That's very good news. Andrea Borman.

    • WTF! Nah, not this one. If you were back then using computers in the 90s or you had a clue, you'd know this was huge and was seen and overused absolutely everywhere and you'd take this article as no more than a retrospective story. That's all it is.
    • these "editors" get paid by the amount of articles and not the quality of content; hence why we get this random stuff from the same "editor" time and time again.
    • 256 times the quality of an audio cd? I think audio cd's sound good so even twice as good as that would be something.
    • It’s not about the NOx. It’s about the electrical field.
