Is it just me or those Metro apps really sucks so bad?

what I don't get is why people expect people to spoonfeed them and baby stuff down.... people should try to better themselves and grow up instead of being babied and drag everyone down.... this is for those who think proper media players are too overwhelming....

Again you're confusing media payers and media managers, and in any case no one said they where to overwhelming.

But what you keep ignoring is that you pr use case is a very very tiny subtraction of a sub percentage of the total user base. They don't make apps for niches in the OS. You are perfectly fine downloading your own more advanced apps, heck you're such a jriver fan girl you'd never use anything else anyway. So I don't see what you're whining about. Or are you expecting the average dumb user who makes up 99% of the users to find a decent simple player and download, while the small niche who wants a bloated media manager gets one included? Seems a bit backwards, especially when that niche isn't happy with the include software and downloads a third party one anyway.

on windows RT you can't!! there is no metro start screen media manager yet! there is nothing that is good enough for everyone and that includes people like me.... if they would have at least had WMP for those they would have catered to both... and they don't so winRT is not going to be purchased by those who care about thier media. which is a way larger group then you think.

Why is it photoshop opens faster than most metro apps?

Its always, pointless animation, loading, then the app fades/slides in... (I'm on a ssd/not slow machine)

LIES! PURE LIES! How dare you lie about Windows 8 in such a manor! You're doing it wrong!

/end over dramatization of Windows 8 fanboys.

For those of you who "open metro apps in less than a second", good for you! It doesn't work that way for everyone. So quit downplaying the issue that appears to be more widespread than you care to admit.

mail opens in a second for me, I've had one occasion where it took somewhere between 5 and 8 ish, but I haven't been able to recreate it. music takes 5 ish on first open, but it has to open a gigantic library so. netflix takes a long time on first start, but I think they messed up, since it's before the loading circle pops up it takes long once that's there it opens up.

As for photoshop, it takes longer than netflix.

WinRTisnt really a media management device. And besides music apps is perfectly fine at handling huge libraries and manage playlists.

winRT is an operating system that is supposed to be complete. It's incomplete without a decent media player. It's good for everything else besides media management. that's where MS got it wrong.

Keep in mind once you open and app, and reopen it, it of course is near instant to open... Talking about the initial opening of an app. For as little these apps are, they should be instant no matter what.

I am a metro fanboy and most built-in apps in Windows 8 don't start instantaneously. They take noticeably longer than they should. I think Photos (viewer), Reader, Music and Video are all very slow for the miniscule interface that they load afterwards.

I was talking about first open or opening after properly closing them. once it's open we're not even talking a second, then it's completely instant

music and videos I think are slowed down by libraries and online stores.

not wanting to get into this whole argument, but they all start instantly for me also. running an acer aspire 5536 (AMD Turion dual core 2.2 Ghz, 4GB Ram and 128GB SSD drive).

All updates have been applied, and running final version (as we are a Microsoft action pack subscriber through partner program).

My laptop is very much not a fast laptop, the only change from stock was the SSD which may have a bearing on this speed issue but from the times some are posting it just doesn't add up (not doubting people, just saying its very odd).

nope, it has media management, it's not good enough(according to you) for you very special use case, but again, your use case is again, very special.

You are being very rude and arrogant for assuming also that everyone is dumb as bricks and doesn't want a good media manager as well. Can't you think outside your comfort zone for just a little teeny bit and realize this?

Just like I thought I was the only one that picked my cuticles for the longest time... till I found out lots of other people do it.... and I was understanding of the other people instead of lying to myself and still thinking I was the only one that did that. LOL

Can you not just use File Explorer for Media Management?

I don't assume they're dumb as bricks. But

1. As I said, it has a fully functional media management, works great with huge libraries to

2. I wok with, fix their computers and such daily. And while they're not stupid even the metro music player is more than they need.

Unfortunately, it's you who are incapable of looking outside your own bubble. Which is weird since you wouldn't use the included media player anyway

2004 called to say even in 2004 that's considered to be behind the times.

Windows 7 called and said the explorer now has full library media management, more powerful than that in the old WMP

How incredibly convenient you have to switch between Desktop and Metro apps.

can you compile and build a professionally blended playlist in it? without custom shell extensions?

Welcome to Windows 8, the soon to be most epic fail ever for desktop users.

And your not alone mate, that above is the reason most users won't go near it. Hell, a good 90% of the people I know will be sticking with Windows 7 simply because of how much of a mess 8 is for desktop users.

Yep, you tell yourself that.. if it makes you feel better?

Not sure what the whole arguement is here, but let me give you some words from what I've picked up.

I still use the Zune app for Library Media management. If Microsoft wants to rip that out from under me like they did with Live Mesh (+BrandonLive, bring that back, PLEASE - With a cherry on top?), I'll switch back to WMP. Depending on my mood, I'll either have Zune, WMP, or even XBox Music open, playing my music. I'm also not afraid of using WinRT Metro apps in conjunction with Win32 desktop apps. Yes, they're two different things. Boo hoo. But this allows me to work they that is most compfortable with me, and does not prohibit me in anyway. I can use RT apps, I can use desktop apps, I can even use them side-by-side (Still can't use two Metro apps though.... WTF?) It's like having an iPad built into my Mac. The Apple fanboys would go bat**** crazy if they could do that, but they can't.

I can't wait until next Friday. 7 days to go, until I download Windows 8 for all my machines. I can't wait to see what apps are waiting for me in the Store. I know MetroTwit will be getting my money, finally having a decent calander app has finally closed gaps in the OS, Having Weather, and News pinned to Start saves me time from going to another website, I'm in love with the chromeless UI of IE 10, Metro Evernote, and OneNote MX. Finally having a Metro Skype client means I can finally ditch the cruddy desktop version.

So, you guys can either go on bickering at every little thing, or find a way to make the OS work for you. But please, quit dragging everyone else down with you. There's changes in computing happening right now that Windows cannot survive long term without changing course. The Start Menu is not a saving grace, and as technology evolves, it's just getting more and more archaic to use. We all saw that with Windows 7 tablet hardware.

Metro is useless for the engineering industry. It quickly becomes an annoyance.

Metro is good for casual home computer/tablet use (people who just use computers for basic tasks like web browsing, word processing, Skype, listening to music, and email, etc.).

sure the apps stink before the official launch... sigh.

also, it is the simple fact that most things I do are speedier on my PC with win8, I can overlook the 'metro' side of things and work as I normally did, just slightly different. When the apps pick up, then I will dive in and such.

How incredibly convenient you have to switch between Desktop and Metro apps.

Well you don't since you can manage your media in the music player just fine. contrary to kitty's beliefs.

can you compile and build a professionally blended playlist in it? without custom shell extensions?

yes

    • This Dell 27 inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor is really cheap after a very long time by Sayan Sen Recently we covered a really good deal on an AMD RX 9070 three-fan model that's available at slightly above its MSRP. If you are looking for a GPU for 1440p gaming that's around the performance of the Nvidia RTX 5070 you should most definitely check it out. Let's say that you are looking for a monitor to pair that up with too. The Samsung 49" G9 curved QD-OLED superultrawide is a good option that can provide an immersive experience. However despite being a very good deal currently (at $855), it may seem unaffordable to you, or you may simply not want to spend as much on a monitor. In that case Dell's S2725QS can be a very good option as it's on sale at the moment for its lowest price in over six months (purchase link under the specs table down below). The big highlight of the Dell S2725QS is its 27-inch IPS panel with a 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) resolution, offering a high pixel density that can make text appear sharper while also providing plenty of screen space for productivity and media consumption. The display supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz through both HDMI and DisplayPort, making it suitable not only for everyday desktop use but also for smoother gaming and scrolling. AMD FreeSync Premium support is included as well, helping reduce screen tearing during gaming sessions. The screen has fairly good brightness and color accuracy so you can use it for general work purpose, though photo/video editing is probably not going to be the best match for this. The technical specs of the Dell S2725QS are given in the table below: Specification Value Viewable Screen Size 27 in (68.58 cm) Screen Mode 4K UHD Maximum Resolution 3840 × 2160 Maximum Preset Resolution 3840 × 2160 @ 120 Hz Standard Refresh Rate 120 Hz Panel Technology In-plane Switching (IPS) Backlight Technology LED Edgelight System Pixel Density 163 PPI Response Time 8 ms GTG, 5 ms GTG, 4 ms GTG Horizontal Viewing Angle 178° Vertical Viewing Angle 178° Brightness 350 cd/m² (nits) Native Contrast Ratio 1500:1 Color Support 1.07 Billion Colors Color Gamut 99% sRGB (CIE 1931) Adaptive Sync AMD FreeSync Premium HDCP Support Yes Mount Type Panel Mount VESA Mount 100 × 100 mm Maximum Height Adjustment 13 cm Tilt -5° to 21° Swivel -30° to 30° Pivot ±90° Stand Adjustments Tilt, Swivel, Height, Pivot Glass Hardness 3H Horizontal Frequency 27–270 kHz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Vertical Frequency 48–120 Hz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Video Inputs 2 × HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3), 1 × DisplayPort 1.4 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3) Operating Temperature 0°C to 40°C Storage Temperature -20°C to 60°C Operating Humidity 10%–80% (Non-condensing) Storage Humidity 5%–95% (Non-condensing) Get it at the link below: Dell S2725QS 27-inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor: $218.49 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $280) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Forget the iPhone. What about Android? Most Samsung Galaxy phones sold in the USA are manufactured in Vietnam. Asian countries have the infrastructure that the USA doesn't have. This is why most electronics are not made in the USA
