If you are using Windows 8 or Windows RT, you no longer need to use the outdated Zune software to manage and sync your Windows Phone. There is a "Windows Phone" app on the Windows Store for both Windows 8 and Windows RT. It's a Metro-Style app that replaces the need for the Zune PC software to tether your Windows Phone to the PC.

does it also do updates for WP?

I had the same question in mind. It doesn't mention updates in the app description. Perhaps for Windows Phone 7, you will still need the Zune PC software to update. However, Windows Phone 8 updates over the air, so with Windows Phone 8, there is absolutely no need to use the ancient Zune Software.

Looking good! looking good! Just wish MS had kept their podcast tab/support built into client as well. I think its pretty awesome i'll be able to manage my phone from my surface ;)

Yup! Imagine trying to manage an iPhone with an iPad. ;)

Doesn't seem to work with 7.5 :(

What phone do you have? did it give any warnings? wonder if it will require 7.8 or whatever they're calling the so long and thanks for all the fish build for 7.x devices?

I can also confirm that it doesn't work on Windows Phone 7.5, it most likely won't work on Windows Phone 7.8 either. My guess is the reason is because Metro apps don't have access to Windows Phone since it isn't format in a way that Metro app apis can recognize.

Good point! I almost forgot. This might have rolled out in preparation for the WP8 event tomorrow!

Yeah, it used to be called Metro. Also it's not a media player, it's a sync/management software for your windows phone.

Why ? why would you need your phone sync tool combined with yoru music player ? they are all in one in that they are all metro and all work together anyway, since they all use the same libraries they don't need to be one massive bloated app, but can be divided into separate smaller purpose built apps. especially since most people won't need the sync software since they sync wirelessly and over the cloud. Cable syncing is getting old fashioned so bloating the media apps with what doesn't belong there in the first place makes no sense.

Windows 8 will work on desktops, so you can run this app on your Desktop and Laptop PCs. I don't see a need for a desktop version.

Its just a shame. Metro apps just suck in my opinion and breaks my flow. It's just annoying I am being forced into using a metro app when I had a nice desktop version previously.

You still will. Do you honestly believe that Microsoft would release Windows Phone 8 without a desktop client? Microsoft still has to support Windows 7 and Mac OS X. They aren't going to break those pre-existing clients and they aren't going to dump those platforms. And any desktop client for Windows 7 (like Zune... probably will still be Zune...) will work just fine on Windows 8.

Just when Apple is about to kick off WWDC 2026, the search giant has announced a platter of new NotebookLM features that add agentic capabilities in chat and more advanced reasoning. For starters, NotebookLM now draws its fuel from Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity to improve accuracy and reliability. One of the things people have been asking for a long time is more transparency into the thinking steps. NotebookLM now shows expanded thinking steps in chat, providing better visibility into the thinking process. Google compared the upgraded NotebookLM with prior versions and found that it "achieved an average win rate of over 65% — a 15% point margin above parity — across our top five core evaluation dimensions," including accuracy & quality, multilingual support, large document analysis, document creation, and advanced research. It showed substantial improvements in analyzing large documents, achieving a 69.9% win rate. The system also delivered "exceptional performance" in advanced web research and source discovery with a 78.2% win rate. The AI research tool now generates outputs in more formats. All of these new features are rolling out globally for those who can loosen up their pockets.
