Windows 8 sales dissapointing

Yay! 4% of the entire install base of Windows has upgraded! Break out the champagne folks.

I would venture to guess a large chunk of that are developers, corporate evaluators, and reporters.

Note it also does not count people who downgrade, nor does it separate OEM preinstallations.

Can I have some of what you're on?

Ballmer stated they will have 400 million licenses by years end. They're well on their way to achieve that now. 40 million is 40 million regardless of who..

Right click -> Open With. Choose WMP and it will ask you if you want to make that the default program for .avi files. Pink icon gone

BUT BUT HOW DO I REMOVE THE PINK HIGHLIGHT IN THE RIBBON???!!!

/s

i'd say that's still slightly different. there's a bit of difference between a completely new and different and a familiar environment that has changed quite a bit.

I don't really care how you spin this one around, the example I gave you shows people are not only able but willing to adjust. Something you flat out disputed.

Indeed. As I stated on the news articles it took about 6 months for Windows 7 to hit the 7 licenses sold per second mark.

Windows 8 has already hit the 15 licenses sold per second mark...

Want to toss out another conspiracy theory or something about how that's actually terrible?

I just got my Windows 8 Pro upgrade license for my macbook pro. Burned the ISO, but haven't installed it yet. Will probably do that after lunch. Hopefully the upgrade will go smoothly.

Meh, I doubt the poor Windows 8 sales has as much to do with Windows 8 than it does with poor PC sales across the board. Pretty much all OEMs were projecting much higher PC sales then are turning out.

I think it more-or-less has to do with the insurgence of the tablet market and the fact that even PC enthusiast are not upgrading their PC as often as they used to.

I've never considered myself that much of a hardware enthusiast. Even though I hand picked the parts of all my home gaming desktops, I tend to go 5+ years between upgrades. I might even go longer between upgrades in the future. Computers are getting faster but the utility of that increased speed is in a diminishing returns tail spin ATM. Other than play some games at a higher framerate/resolution I would argue that there is little different on the application level between my 5 year old Q6600 quad core and the PCs that are being sold today. The only folks who would see any substantial difference are probably video editing professionals (very small percentile of users, basically).

No it's not. It's a weird hybrid. When using the explorer why do I need to see 'pink' colors when I highlight a certain type of file ?

Why can't I change the background picture without the UI changing into some hideous colors ?

Why does it go into full screen when I want to play some MP3's ?

When I'm on the start screen why does it switch to desktop when I press WIN+E ?

Why does the built in email client go into full screen ?

etc etc etc ....

It's a weird weird hybrid.

It's not about the menu. I use RocketDock, simply because I like it that way. But with the new UI you have 2 homescreens ... windows switching between them depending on what you do is ...weird.

If you want to stop the UI from changing colors with a new wallpaper you have to go to personalize->Color. It will be set on Automatic. Just pick another color you want or any color and play around with the color mixer and intensity. The other problems are really self-explanatory, clicking on mp3s open Xbox music which is a metro app so its full screen, just change it to another music player (you get that option the first time you click on a mp3). Win+E opens explorer on desktop. Email is a metro app so its full screen.

    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
    • On my music making (non internet) PC Sony Acid Pro 7.0 Adobe Audition 2015 Korg Legacy Collection Windows 7 SP1
    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
