I didn't realise until today that you could play the demo...5 minutes after installing it (well, over an hour apparently, but it didn't feel like it!) I coughed up the money. This is just the kind of game I could get in to. So far I've been able to get something off the ground, but I haven't been able to keep it up there. But that's great, I'll have a sense of accomplishment when it happens.

Can't for the life of me get a rover onto the Mun, failed like 50+ times and now I've raged and given up. Many attemps I've lined up perfectly, hit fast forward too far by accident and slammed into the Mun... RAGE!!

Best I can do is bounce, and then crash... or slam into it @ under 100 m/s using the sky crane... damn this game!!

I shot a Kerbal in to space without thinking about how to get him back down. Poor little guy will be orbiting the Sun for the rest of his days. :(

Or...hmm, maybe I could send a rescue party to try and push him back. That would take some insane planning though.

Thought I would bump this thread back up the the top as I've just started playing this game recently and I've already put many hours into it. It's so addictive.

I've had a lot of crashes, but I've made a lot of orbits around different planets and moons, and I've had one successful landing. It's a lot of fun!

Anyone else playing this?

I think I'm at the point where I'm going to start a new simulation in Career mode, I've just been using the sandbox to hone my skills and get to grips with movement and maneuvers. I've still not got building a decent craft down yet, a lot of the time I'll build something and for some reason it will collapse quickly. Could be game bugs I suppose, but more likely it's me being an idiot.

I think my problem is relying too much on connecting struts? I've noticed a lot of the time when I decouple, the debris stays attached and I sometimes have to 'wobble' it off.

Possibly but I can't find a better way as I can't seem to attach multiple couplers directly to a fuel tank.etc as they only seem to attach at one end

It's always interesting when you find out the hard way that you didn't attach the engines quite as securely as you thought...

Or you've forgotten to set the stages properly and end up de-coupling the cockpit instead of blasting off

I break in to hysterics when those kind of things happen.

"3...2...1...lif-" BOOM! "...maybe not."

I'm still trying to master orbiting. I've got one guy who went too far and ended up orbiting the sun, and another guy who managed to orbit Kerbin, but when I tried to bring him back down he hurtled towards the mountains. He was going too fast even with the chute deployed and just went splat. :(

I think I've got orbiting down now, using maneuvers basically tells me where to go before I've even got there. Like yesterday I managed an orbit around Minnmus, and a few days ago a got one around Laythe.

... landings a different matter though. I SUCK at landings! I crashed on Minnmus, the gravitys too low so I couldn't make any adjustments without going wildly off course and I scraped the landscape. And Laythe just has too much water.. I just went splat into the sea.

And yeah it is hilarious when what you've built goes wrong. When I first started playing I used a lot of SRB's, and I was in stitches watching a wobbly set of them attempt to get my ship into the air.  Now I don't use any.. strictly liquid based fuel.

Best game out there IMO, cant get enough of this little gem :)

Great modding community also ;)

Mods I use are:

City Lights & Clouds.

Mechjeb 2

Chatterer

Crew Manifest

Precise Node

Remote Tech 2

Telemachus

Kerbal Alarm Clock

Toolbar 1.4.1

Kerbal Engineer

I wonder if there are any graphics mods for the game, particularly for the space skybox. I always notice the seams in the current universe texture. :p Not seen anything like that yet.

Try Universe Replacer ;)

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/44135-0-22-Universe-Replacer-v4-0

I've realised today I still don't fully understand maneuvers. I mainly just use prograde and retrograde and with the other symbols I click and drag the randomly and then move the node around until I get what I want.

Is this how most players do it or am I playing too blindly here?

Should explain it a little better  :)

Thanks for that link. I got it down now, I've been able to make some really tight low orbits now, which is a milestone for me!

Awesome buddy! :D

Its one big learning process, with tons of fun included, is kerbal :)

Kerbal Space Program To Add NASA Asteroid Redirect Mission to Game

The Planet Kerbin has a new partner in the exploration of its solar system. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has joined forces with Kerbal Space Program to create Kerbal Space Program: Asteroid Redirect Mission, a special update that adds realistic NASA rocket parts and missions to the award-winning indie space agency sim game.

The mission shares the same name as the three-part mission which started in 2013 and is currently projected to be completed in 2022 with a manned mission onto an orbiting asteroid beyond the Moon. Kerbal Space Program and NASA will share the stage at SXSW Gaming on Saturday at 12:30 in the Palmer Events Center in Austin, Tex. The panel will offer the first look at the in-game mission as well as discuss the process of taking a real mission that is still highly conceptual and assembling it in Kerbal Space Program.

?Kerbal Space Program is about giving gamers the chance to dream big, even if they?re not astrophysicists. This relationship with NASA, the very beacon of big dreams and imagination, is going to give players a real opportunity to learn about the universe we?re living in,? Kerbal Space Program lead developer Felipe Falanghe said. ?The Asteroid Redirect Mission is going to be one of the rewarding and challenging accomplishments in all of gaming. We can?t wait to see our current and future players take on this mission and perhaps, teach NASA a few tricks along the way.?

The mission mirrors NASA?s real operation in many ways. Namely, players will tackle the same three steps as NASA:

  • Identify: Detect, target, distinguish and select the asteroids that you want to move
  • Redirect: Build a rocket ship and set course to intercept the moving asteroid, then position your ship to redirect the asteroid?s trajectory
  • Research: Send your Kerbals on EVA (extravehicular activity) around the asteroids to conduct experiments on the object and gather valuable scientific data as it (and you) hurtle through deep space

?The collaboration with Kerbal Space Program can help drive interest by future explorers in next-generation technology development and deep space exploration, said Bob Jacobs, deputy associate administrator for Communications at NASA. ?Having an element of the experience based in the reality of NASA?s exploration initiatives empower players to manage their own space program while getting valuable insight into the reality of studying asteroids as a next step in getting to Mars.?

Nearly a dozen new parts, including the game?s biggest fuel tanks, will help players tackle what is the most ambitious NASA mission to date. Another new part is the robotic grappling device, which players will use to snare the rock and redirect it into orbit around the Mun, Kerbin or other planets. This new device can also grab things other than asteroids, making it one of the most versatile parts added to the game. These new parts will not only help the Asteroid Redirect Mission but will also offer both new and old players the chance to experiment more in the game?s open sandbox mode.
