Xbox One 500GB hard drives can't be replaced

Recommended Posts

You want to put in a 500GB/1TB SSD in a $400 or 500 console? :|

"I can't replace it if it breaks" is an invalid argument.

1. If it's in warranty, you are covered

2. If warranty is out, nothing stops you from opening it and replacing the drive.

Who said anything about 500GB?

You can't just replace the drive on an Xbox, they have specific models that have a security partition that the Xbox checks for. There were some drives you could spoof as an official drive by including the security partition but you couldn't put in drives any bigger than the ones Microsoft sold.

By posting on twitter it seems

HawkMan gives people a hard time about jumping to conclusions or posting false claims about XB1.

Makes a completely false claim about Sony based on absolutely no information. Doesn't see a problem.

I'm not saying HawkMan has a Superiority Complex, but I'm certainly typing in this text field and clicking the Post button.

Oh no I was wrong on a prediction.

that's 1 wrong prediction for me. I dunno lets' round off to 10 for AB, 20 for Marty and 5 for Nashy.

You know with all the made up rumours you guys post about the xbox one where some have even been proven false BEFORE you post them, maybe you shouldn't feel so good on that horse ? just saying.

The amount of times someone is wrong is irrelevant. You can't criticise others for making far out predictions based on zero evidence and then turn around and do that exact thing yourself. That's called being a hypocrite.

The articles I was posting were from the mainstream media/gaming websites, not from my own ass. In other words, I didn't make them, I just believed quite a lot of them and low and behold there was indeed a lot of truth from all the DRM/online checking rumours.

Does it really matter? Is size the issue as to having the ability to take it out and replace it easy or not the thing? If it breaks for some reason I'll have them replace it for free, if it's a drive I replaced myself and it breaks then I'm stuck paying for a replacement again.

Seeing how you can use external storage if you want, and USB3 is pretty fast as well, then that is a nice option to have if the 500GB is full. On the other hand, you own games until you give them away or sell them back to some retailer. You can just as well redownload something that you've deleted from the HDD to make room for newer games. I still have games from years ago, just sitting there, I haven't replayed them and probably never will, in this case, space limitations don't matter.

    • Kind of glad I upgraded to S26 Ultra 1TB this year, with trade-in and discounts it cost me €1199, that's only €119 more than the S23 Ultra (256 GB) cost me. Last time I bought it via my phone provider outright, now via Samsung.com I reckon the S27 series will be more expensive too.

    • I cannot believe this is a news post from Neowin. This should be embarassing, coming from a "senior editor". Is it your first day using Windows?! Maybe it's time to find a new Windows news site.
