Tech issues solved added in tech forums

No one said anything about not having fun. But you joined a month after I did, and you surely see that there's a difference. I would like to see us try some things out and see if they make us better than we are now, rather than blindly shoot them down in the first few hours. We all have a fondness for IT, and therefore we all know that there are almost always day-one problems.

And I'm sorry that you're not going to renew your subscription, but that's your perogative. :(

I was speaking out of anger mostly and will keep it.. But, it just seems that Neowin doesn't care about the feedback and just shrugs it off..

 

But it was a lot worse before and nothing was done about it. It doesn't really seem that bad anymore.. compared to when Windows 8 was released anyway.. Just seems like a violent push.. Thank you for taking the time to actually reply back to me instead of just shoving it down my throat.

Ok. Since Neowin has "overnight" gotten serious and a attitude for people trying to make light of the situation, I have decided I will NOT be renewing my sub. Why help a community that doesn't care about it's members.

I'm certainly willing to give it a go, though I still think it places too much importance on one single aspect of the site (answering questions). I think of Neowin as more than just a tech site where people come to get answers to questions; it's a community and I think its members should be valued as a whole and not just for how many correct answers they've been voted for. I feel that the Likes system that is already in place would have been more fitting perhaps since it isn't just limited to answering questions. Maybe it could be made optional or something; I know it is silly and vain maybe but many of us have been here a long time and it is a bit disheartening to see a big 0 under our names.

Yeah, I'm gonna agree this is a dumb change. Post count is important, regardless of if a few people post just to see their post count increase. Deal with those people in their own way and leave the post count showing. Since the LARGE majority of my participation in this forum is NOT in tech sections because lets be honest, this is NOT a leading tech site and isn't going to be, this change will only be a negative to me. We have a good community and group of members, and there is certainly good help here, but that's not what the majority of posts on this message board are about. Message boards have worked just fine for years the same way, no need to change things just for the sake of changing. I don't have an issue with adding the best answers part, but I don't particularly care for removing the post count just to pretend this is a site focused on tech support.

The point of replacing the post count with the best answers count is to recognize the efforts of those that went out of their way to help their fellow member.

But only the best answers get counted. So efforts to help others don't always get recognized. Also what if multiple posters each give an equal contribution or people built upon each others answers?

Whining? Opposing opinions to a change you have implemented means whining? So can we expect that any future decisions you make should automatically mean that we should shut up and deal with it?

 

I mean I understand its your site. Its ultimately your call and I respect that but if you really meant for this change to boister your community up more like your staff members have replied to this thread to elaborate, a response such as yours is more immature than the "whiners" you speak of.

 

Want the change accepted? Start first with reinforcing your reasoning.

Yeah, that's a pretty ****ty slap in the face to those of us who have been here since the beginning and supported you by giving you our money multiple times. That's probably about the most disrespectful post I've ever seen from an Admin.

 

How about you give us a reason why removing post counts is useful. It keeps getting asked why they are useful and a number of reasons have been given, but there has yet to be a reason why removing it is better. As a new visitor to this site, I would very likely discount someone who has 0 best answers. This does the opposite of what was the intention. Not to mention those of us who spend many hours helping people in section that don't have a "best answer" feature,or the people who spend hours helping someone debug something just to have someone come in and drop one line and get all the credit. And on top of that, people may be an expert in certain topics compared to someone who just posts a lot of generic Googled solutions to people's problems. A high number of best answers gives a false impression that a new answer may be more correct than someone else's. There are a number of reasons why systems like this don't work well. Calling the people who help pay your bills whiners when they offer valid opposition and concerns is incredibly disrespectful. I know you well enough to know you're better than that, Steven, and I'll just assume and hope it was a slip only out of frustration.

IMO if people strive for higher Best Answer numbers rather than higher spammer numbers the overall quality of the forum should go up, as people are going to spend more time in the help forums, as well as helping each other out.

 

And as with other changes upsetting people, if a change like this is going to make people want to leave, they didnt need to be here to begin with.

All very valid points, and I do apologise. I was annoyed at the time, and I was surprised at the fact that in the short space of time it has been announced there were so many posts that didn't want to even see how things went.

However, I stand by the change for the moment for that exact reason. Why are so many people not willing to give this a go and see what happens? Do we want to stagnate?

Stardock wants them to, it makes Neowin look more professional, along with answered questions driving more traffic from google.

Members voicing their concern about a site they like/love and we're "whining"?   Unbelievable and unacceptable.  So is this an indication of the direction Neowin is heading to, only reward a minority or try to entice others by manipulating them with a reward that is nothing but a number?

I had dinner, watched a movie and came back to see a lot of posts saying the same things from pages ago by the same people, arguing against the people who support it, because they believe it will eventually lead to higher quality posts on this forum. But the problem is that it's only post quality in certain parts of the forum. The issue we're having is that we don't all post in those areas specifically.

 

Ironically I came to neowin many years ago seeking tech help but I didn't keep posting here because I got the help I needed. I stayed because I found other parts of the forum that I enjoyed.

 

I'm really not sure how I should take it now that I'm being told that my contributions (however small) to this forum aren't worth anything if I'm not posting in reply to some one elses tech troubles.

 

Also I consider what phone or OS a person is using, or their location, considering it can be anything from nothing to the moon, to be less useful pieces of information than their post count.

And its only a few certain members that are complaining and backing each other up....you dont see the other 299,999+ members moaning, infact other than the little click, most others are saying they welcome the change of focus and are tired of post count ###### and bullies.

Why bother having post-count stars if we don't have post counts?

 

Should people that have extremely high amounts of post counts now be demoted to standard members considering they were promoted mainly due to the fact of their sheer amount of posts?

 

The entire basis of a forum revolves around post counts for the most part. How will competitions work if we don't know their post counts now?

(Yes I realise it's in their profile. So was their warning level and that decision got reversed quickly.)

Completely agree with you.

It's great you guys are trying to encourage members to help one another, but please remove to option to best answer your own threads.

It could lead to distorting the number of people who are genuinely helping others.
