Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - PlayStation 4 = ~60fps, Xbox One = ~30fps

Recommended Posts

So we take the minimum as the Xbox One frame rate, and the maximum as the PS4 frame rate. with no definite answers either way.

Good way to generate traffic & NeoGAFUD strikes again

Thank you. I've yet to see the concrete answer on framerate for the Xbox One.

Honestly in all of this, I'm just angry they haven't locked Frame rate for this game. Theoretically if the PS4 can reach 60fps a third of the time while the rest of the time it drops down to 45fps, what is the damn point? Beyond hurting my eyes.

Not another FPS/RESOLUTION comparison thread..... I wish people would stop pulling at straws to try to validate there purchase or something.  The PS4 SHOULD run it a little better.

It is kind of fun to see what kind of info people can manage to pull out of dark corners of google to post here to try to back up whatever there side is. I have been guilty of doing so many times lol

Threads like this turn into attempts by some to show off why their pick is best or some trying to defend their choice when its on the 'losing' end of things.

Regardless, I'm following this game closely because I never bought it originally and want to see what the final product turns out to be.

If we end up seeing a ps4 version locked at 60 and an X1 version locked at 30 while everything else is the same on both, I'll be getting the ps4 version. Simple as that. It has nothing to do with which console I like more.

For those of you with a single console such as just an X1, I really don't think its the end of the world in this case.

What this all means for the future, who knows. There were plenty of articles claiming that the X1 was actually more difficult to optimize for versus the ps4. So combine that with the gpu power difference and something like this is not surprising. Will that change down the line? Who knows. Just worry about that on a game by game basis.

They will have gone for a higher resolution rather than frame rate cus tomb raider doesnt need a high frame rate as long as it doesnt drop below 30 in the more demanding parts of it it will be fine. I played it on 1 setting lower than max with tress FX on a 1GB 6870 got about 30fps outta that an was fine. Its an action/adventure game so your exploring stuff solving puzzles etc more than fighting anything so doesnt need it. If it was like CoD an first person shooter then 60 fps is the number you aim for and reduce resolution/lod to get that.  I dont know why people dont get it its like minecraft coming to x1 and it only getting 30 fps while ps4 getting 60. It doesnt need it.

The PS4 will run better atm becuase of the more powerful GPU but with the rushed release games with bugs in and stuff its more realistic to see a 2nd possibly 3rd generation game when the devs have had the time to get to grips with stuff and then see which is better.

I saw someone mention whats after 60 fps will the console do 4K this gen, ummm no most PC hardware wont handle 4K very well atm and it would prolly take till the next gen of consoles are out to be seeing lower cost 4K TV's and good enough penetration in to homes for it to be worth while making a 4K capable consoles

We are all worried that since a last gen game can't runt at 60fps on a next gen console, when we get true next gen titles all the Xbox One will have is 30fps ports.

There's a few factors to take into account, first this is still just a quick port, we know most of these don't come out the best. Second like I said it's still early days and both will only get better with time on the developers hands.

While the game is on last gen systems this is a port of the PC version with the better graphics and that whole truefx thing iirc, or maybe it's named something else, I forget but they made a big deal about it on the PC version.

You're thinking of TressFX.

GPGPU-based hair physics essentially.

That's right, from what I remember it's in the next gen ports compared to the ps3 and 360.

Laura Croft is so old she surely had botox injections to look so good. I's more realistic this way.

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whether it makes her more realistic is also debatable, I've seen girls that look like Croft. If Enix is making this as a feature then that's a pitiful excuse (last gen console could hold up the same changes they made to this version), there's not even a PC version of DE coming out. To me that really screams they just want to make more money by selling the same game to X1 and PS4 owners.

However.. Having never played the original version.. then the 60$ for the de edition + dlc is a better deal for me than buying a normal version then paying for dlc on top.

But why be the first publisher to push for a full $60? Even EA didn't make such a move with ME3 Special Edition Wii U (it was around $29.99)

It's really just greed, they didn't make enough money selling TR when it launched last year.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition has broken release early it seems. Some guy has it and currently streaming it live on Twitch or UStream (not sure which)

He confirms it running at 60fps too @ 1080p.

Her hair does look absolutely amazing and shes so god damn cute, way better than the Angelina Jolie version, shed be the type of girl id go for in rl. This is the young version when shes just getting started into exploring (think somene said theyd done a young version before but i dunno). They obviously wanted to keep everything smooth as possible cus everyone elses hair is completely static so they prolly catered for the GPU's that cant do GPGPU that well to but yeah the hair is good, 1000's of individually generated hair strands each having its own physics or whatever it is applied to it.

PS4 can't be locked at a res it can't maintain consistently

Most PC gamers turn off tress fx because it looks horrible and has weird behavior bugs though :) there plenty of screenshots andyoutube videos of her tress fx hair being a mess and just not looking as good as the normal hair.

So much drama... let's see:

http://www.nixxes.com/nixxes/newsdetail/20-uk/news/167-trhd-announced

The PS4 version was done by Nixxes Software who have been developing / porting since 1999 and has done 15 games, at least 6 of them ported to Xbox 360.

http://www.giantbomb.com/nixxes-software-bv/3010-7513/

The Xbox One version was done by United Front Games who have been developing / porting since 2007 and has done 3 games only 1 of which was on Xbox 360

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Front_Games

Now tell me how developer experience does not have anything to do with it. Seeing that Forza 5 runs 60FPS on XB1.

Good thing they helped out then!

In addition to converting the game to Playstation 4, Nixxes Software provided support to United Front Games, the developer responsible for the Xbox ONE version of the game.

Your point is fair though up until "but Forza does...". Racing games usually reach higher res/FPS, otherwise we'd be going around saying but GT5 is 1080p/60FPS and no other PS3 game is.

Oh right, well guess im a sucker for a bird whose a little rough around the edges then!!!

But GT5 isn't 1080p60 either ;)

GAF's favourite Albert Pennello is getting a bit of a hammering for his statements on TR

?Look, I had a lot of time to think about this and I believe in what I said. I believe that the differences between the boxes [PS4 and Xbox One] is not all that great and I know what is going behind the scenes and I have access to more information about some of this thing than a lot of people. Sometimes people tend to neglect the points that are in my favor and they like to highlight the points that tell me I am wrong. I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story,? he said.

This just reads like a "have you guys seen titanfall?"

?I think if you look at the title which we launch, which were multiplatform titles. The bulk of them were the same. I think there were 12 titles were released on both platforms [PS4 and Xbox One], leaving three, all of them had the same performance on both boxes. Everybody wants to focus on frame rate, there is Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and OK, there could be a lot of reasons why that could be true but we are just a [few] weeks in, we just shipped, it?s a long generation. People who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better. I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in experiences which are pretty minor,? he said.

This is a bit more down to earth PR, but both consoles "just shipped".

"It's like, we're the movie theater that has all the blockbuster movies, and has the most screens, and then somebody has figured out that there's also another movie theater that has less screens but if you look at this one movie, like, sometimes it looks better on their screen. And in our movie theater, sometimes some of our movies look better.

You know what, I think the games on PS4 look fantastic, I play them, I enjoy them...it's a great thing for this industry that they have success...at the end of the day, if I have to pick one box, I'm gonna pick ours. I work here, so I root for the home team."

The movie analogy... what?

Why is it so wrong to think Ryse looks great?

The visuals are what most universally agreed made it a stand out title.

As far as the rest of that, well it seems like that guy does not know when to quit. Regardless of whether he makes good points or not, he clearly gets jumped in every thread there, so maybe he should take the hint.

That last quote is golden

So Xbox's Albert Pennello says he only chooses the Xbox over the PS4 cause he works for them, lol

I don't believe he said anywhere that that's the only reason

You clearly don't work for a company that develops a product and has excellent direct competition for that product or you wouldn't be pulling that nonsense out of what he said.
