Windows 10: New leaked screenshots reveal brand new UI for Settings; death of Control Panel?

New screenshots from recent internal builds of Windows 10 have revealed that the Settings app has received a huge make over, along with the title bar which now has a dedicated full screen button. The screenshots also reveal that elements within the Control Panel are slowly going away, with features being stripped in place of messages which tell users to use the new Settings app.

 

From the screenshots, it's clear that Microsoft has started with the user-interface updates, something that we claimed would begin to happen this month. WinBeta understands that a lot more than just the Settings app within Windows 10 is set to get a face lift, including File Explorer which was mentioned by Gabe Aul recently.

 

The fact that elements within the Control Panel are being removed with messages telling users to use the Settings app may mean that Microsoft is planning to remove the Control Panel completely. This is something that has been rumored for sometime now, and it looks like it may be true.

I hope it's not fake. Looks pretty nice and will work nicely on everything (PC, tablet and phone).

Is Brad Sam going to show up and tell us if this is real or not?

I am guessing those cogs are placeholders.

What is this call? Windroid?

This is pretty much control panel's default view stripped of the links underneath categories. Good chance it is real.

ok, I'm getting a good feeling from the icons. "IF" this is in fact, the new UI for settings, its a good start IMHO.

 

Added: What build is this supposedly from then?

We've known for a while now that Microsoft was working to remove the duality of Windows 8. Between Control Panel and PC Settings, we've known which one would survive getting the ax - the one that can scale, and that's the new Settings app. If Windows 10 ships with the Control Panel, (And it doesn't look like it's going to be THANK GOD!) Microsoft didn't do things the way they should have.

I'm fine with them adding a Metro way to do the control panel, but for the love of god leave the old one alone. At least till you have something that will be FULLY functional, which being Metro, will likely be never, and always be missing stuff.

 

I still use the small-icon control panel. It has everything. It's a nice central place for people who know what they are doing to get to the settings they want. Without the Vista UI that likes to bury stuff.

As I said, fine with a more friendly UI for the average joe, but leave the original interface till it's been replaced properly, or there's a reason it needs to be removed.

You cannot keep something that has been deprecated. If something's missing, chances are the functionality is no longer present in Windows.

Category view is one of THE most asinine things they ever did, just give me a list, 90% of us actually know what we are looking for, category view ads unneeded steps to a simple process

I still love category view. List view is a mess on my eyes to browse through. It gets worse when most of the icons look the same.

I would think that, if MSFT would upgrade/update the icons in windows, then perhaps it would be easier on the eyes. not to mention more asthetic.

INB4 another half-baked Vista-style work where a few applets will rewritten to follow the new guidelines and all the others will be left identical to the XP counterparts.

I hope not. I've submitted numerous feedback suggesting decommissioning all those old popup boxes for something more modern. Search for it, and up vote it! (Y)

If this is true, which hasnt been proven and people are going off like it is 100 percent, then its much better than what is currently in the TP. And basically, just looks like a rehashed design of the currently category view in Win7/Win8. So they are really not far off from what is currently being used and what is the default view in Win7/8. Basically going with a pure category view and getting rid of all All Control Panel Items option. And changing the name from Control Panel, to PC Settings.

Shall have to wait and see. There are some pretty good looking concepts that have been produced over the years. Some have been fake, some have been real or close to it.

Also, whats with the last screenshot on the OP? Looks off from the others and still has the All Control Panel Items in the menu. Or am I missing something?

Assuming that this is real:

 

It looks like Control Panel hasn't been removed completely (probably for legacy reasons).

 

The new "Settings" is the "zPC Settings" from build 9879.

The right direction for who?

Assuming this is real, it's not like it's some big drastic change or anything, pretty much the same procedure as before, just fitting in with the new UI. This is bad how exactly?

I am curious to see if it handles third party control panel extensions though, again if it's even real.

      It pretty much has to be compatible with MS Office or it is going nowhere. The rest of the world runs office including Europe. If it is not compatible it will not survive.
