Windows 10: New leaked screenshots reveal brand new UI for Settings; death of Control Panel?

Being able to have them on your tablet or phone and still having access to it on your desktop too, that whole unified platform idea.  Choice is a funny thing.

WP8 is a failure with less than 3% marketshare (actually down from 3.9%).

So lets force the 90% of OS marketshare to conform to the failed 3% phone platform for the sake of unification, what a BRILLIANT idea!

Mmmmm tablets? Maybe you should watch MS Build 2014 keynote. MS isn't forcing anything on you. You can still use old win32/64 apps. The incentive of  metro apps is the easy port of said app to xbox\wp\tablets. What makes Windows great is options, unlike mac osx.

Actually microsoft is indeed forcing metro by removing the modern windows 7 style control panel in favor of a metro version.

This discussion is about the "death of Control Panel" which I have been routinely addressing in this discussion.

And why would you advise people to block me when you've not done it yourself?

Why can't they just have a single unified GUI? Why do they have to have regular apps and modern apps? Can't they just make them all have the same graphics?

Actually microsoft is indeed forcing metro by removing the modern windows 7 style control panel in favor of a metro version.

How so? Windowed?  All you can see so far is windowed?  Check.  Sorted by categories out of the box like previous versions?  Check.  Functionality currently appears more or less identical?  Check.  Of course it's not visually the same, it's a WIP.  Bitching over nothing?  Check.  And as mentioned before, you can still run the traditional stuff, same as before.  All of this "removal" is pure speculation and fearmongering.  Even in 8.1 the classic setup is still there.  Get off it already.

Being able to have them on your tablet or phone and still having access to it on your desktop too, that whole unified platform idea.  Choice is a funny thing.

Not to mention all the benefits that comes with the WinRT framework which benefit the end user in terms of better power management, memory usage, ability to suspend and free up memory etc. Honestly, I swear people here have spent no time learning the benefits of the WinRT framework and instead whinge because of change. The complaints regarding Windows 8.x had some legitimacy but with Windows 10 the complaints are more about 'they're changing things! I don't like change!' than actually something legitimate.

Wow, really.  Imagine if everyone blocked everyone else who they didnt agree with or because the topic went off course.  No one would post anything anymore.

Server IE11 is so ridiculously locked down that I think it fails in its function as a web browser. I would rather use IE6 over the horror that is PEP IE11 :p. At least I don't have to click through several dialogue boxes just to browse the internet...

And that sort of lockdown for a SERVER makes a ton of sense - and there are options if you aren't going to use the server AS a server (I stated one of them - that actually costs me nothing).

You are twisting my words, I never said I "want it now, not later" for anything.

And you are simply making excuses for microsoft and their weak and backwards metro junk, making a decent metro mail app isn't going to cut into their bank account, their windows live email client didn't undercut their office sales did it?

Order_66: I use the same default view YOU do.  However, I have done testing of operating systems (Microsoft's, and those from other companies), and I am quite aware that it takes time to migrate from one paradigm to another.  You, by comparison, want the migration to be immediate and instantaneous.  I'm not the one complaining that the migration is taking too long (that means that, despite my preferences, I'm in not that big a hurry)  - you, however, are.

Windows Live Mail lacked features compared to Outlook - it's why I didn't migrate to it FROM Outlook.  It had ONE feature that Outlook lacked - support for USENET newsgroups; had USENET remained relevant, I might have kept it.  (As it was, I migrated from the old Outlook Express to Outlook BECAUSE USENET became irrelevant, due largely to the BT protocol and the adoption - by me - of broadband.  (Look at how - and why - Thunderbird is still seen as relevant today.)

On Category View - the very reason I actually understand what is taking so long is that I actually AM comparing Category View (in the Technical Preview, where it is the default once again) to Category View in 8 and 8.1 - where it isn't the default - there are more options just in Category View alone - options that Category View in 8.x lacked; they weren't there in 7 or earlier, either.  In other words, there are MORE options - not fewer.  Greater adjustability - not lesser adjustability.  More options - not fewer.  In other words, because I'm actually engaging in checking out individual trees, I'm actually finding more adjustability - something that we have both criticized Windows 8.x for lacking.

Lastly, what is Mail actually lacking that it needs - in YOUR opinion?  And why must it compete - feature for feature - with Outlook, as opposed to Windows Live Mail (which still exists)?  Outlook is a PAID application - comparing any free application to it is silly in the extreme; it actually does FREE applications a dis-service.

A final point on Category View - I went to Small Icon view starting with XP because everything I needed as far as adjustability went actually FIT on a single page in Small Icon view.; now, the adjustability has gotten so fine-grained that it no longer does.  THAT is what I meant by adjustability up the wazoo - it has, literally, gotten THAT detailed.  Is that, in fact, your REAL complaint?  That Windows has gotten too complicated/complex?

If he is being a deliberate contrarian, that, in and of itself, is not a sin - however, if that IS the case, I wish he would simply admit it and be done with it, as opposed to acting childish (which is how he comes across).

This again, you twisting my words and inventing an attack, I never said Mail had to "compete - feature for feature - with outlook"  and to think you are the one insinuating that I am somehow "acting childish".

How many metro apps have equivalent number of features and functionality compared to their modern win32 counterparts?

Why should anything from the metro design language become a replacement for a truly modern win32 program when metro is obviously gimped and half-baked?

This is the big problem with metro and the replacement of the control panel (or anything else for that matter), the metro CP is already showing signs of being weaker and lacking in features compared to the modern windows 7 CP.

You want change? fine, but for gods sakes don't cripple or 'dumb down' windows 10 with useless, half-baked metro junk that's already been a proven "across the board" failure.

Metro marketshare failures:

WP8 - less than 3%

Surface 3 - still in the hole. (or did it break even yet?)

Windows 8 - less than 15%

Come up with a better plan microsoft, you shouldn't even touch the desktop until you do.

"Metro marketshare failures:"

What about xbox it's design is also "METRO"....

Surface was profitable in 2014 Q1...

By your logic mac osx has failed hard. 12+ years at only 7 percent marketshare.

In which case I'm sure it breaks one of the forums rules in relation to trolling and flame bait. It is one thing to have a disagreement and layout reasons why but to continuously harp on about the same crap over and over and over again as Order_66 does I have to ask what value his 'contribution' (a word I use loosely) does for the forum other than derail conversations into a flame war.

Surface was profitable in 2014 Q1...

I really wouldn't call those numbers "profitable", but at least they didn't have a huge write-down as they did in mid-2013:

Unsold inventory for Microsoft's Surface RT tablet recently led to a write-down totaling $900 million.

That number turned out to be greater than the amount of revenue earned on the entire Surface product line.

According to GeekWire, total Surface revenue reached $853 million on June 30, 2013.

Their shipment of Surface tablets broke in again in Q2 2014. After 3.2m in Q1, it broke in to 2.7m in Q2 2014. Also in Q2, 36,8m of Android tablets were shipped and 13.3m of Apple tablets (Source: Statista 2014). Market share of Microsoft Surface tablets is only at tiny 1.6% (Source: Chitika).

By your logic mac osx has failed hard.

Let's take a look at the current Statista stats for Septemper 2014:

Windows 7: 49.64%

Windows XP: 12.81%

Mac OS X: 8.27%

Windows 8.1%: 7.88%

Mac OS X still has more market share than Windows 8.1. Even the 13 year old Windows XP, which has reached End of Life over half a year ago, is still a lot more popular than Windows 8.1. That clearly makes Windows 8.1 the one who fails hard.

As such, putting a Windows 8-style control panel into Windows 10 would be a very bad idea.

Stop skewing numbers towards your argument...Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 has double the market share of  all version osx combined which was release 13 years.

Market Share of Windows 8.1 Windows 8.1    12.10%
Market Share of Windows 8 Windows 8    6.55%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.9 Mac OS X 10.9    2.79%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.10 Mac OS X 10.10    2.66%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.6 Mac OS X 10.6    0.68%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.8 Mac OS X 10.8    0.50%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.7 Mac OS X 10.7    0.49%
Market Share of Mac OS X 10.5 Mac OS X 10.5    0.12%

Of course their sales went down in 2014Q2. That happens to every product right before a new generation is launched. That "tiny" 1.6% is, however, just 0.1% less then Google. Microsoft is set to take over Google this year (and they already did).

The USA is not the world. In Europe, they have a double-digit market share. They beat out iOS in 24 markets.

Yeah, let's not include Windows 8 because then, my claim wouldn't work anymore. Also. "OS X still has more market share than Windows 8.1"? That's nothing to be proud of. Windows 8.1 managed to get 12% (these are the real numbers) market share in 1 year, while OS X needed 12 year to get to 7%.

You're saying that one version has less marketshare than another OS with ALL versions combined? Does that really make any sense? (Hint: It doesn't!)

The comparison of windows 8.x to OSX is indeed a very funny one, especially when you factor in that you must purchase hardware that is typically many times more expensive just to get OSX.

With windows 8.x any $300 junk laptop will do.

If windows 8 was such a smashing success and people love metro tiles then why is it that even with its much cheaper price it is still having trouble keeping up with or surpassing OSX in marketshare?

Stop skewing numbers towards your argument...

Stop with these ridiculous insults, just because you can't face the facts. The numbers are accurate, you can look them up here on Statista, just as i said.

Those were global numbers, numbers for the US (also Sep. 2014) are still a bit different:

Windows 7: 40.92%

Mac OS X: 14.8%

Windows XP: 9.71%

Windows 8.1%: 8.45%

Even if you still were to add the share for Windows 8 (5.61%), you'd get a total of 14,06%, which is still less than the 14.8% of OS X.

(Besides, that netmarket junk is hardly a reliable source, and Wikipedia stats... eww. Let's better not talk about that.)

What insults? Even your source states win8/8.1 which is 2 years old and  has almost double the global market share of all version of osx which is 12 years old.

Like i said from the start your logic is off.

    • They already threw the Ultra 1st gen under the bus?
    • Right, Google... because that's who this is going to. Google, the company who's entire business model is geared around ad revenue and your personal data.
    • That is the natural course for regulations. First to protect the consumer. Then to protect the business/industry from upstart competition. There are countless examples across history.
    • I have never been a huge fan of libre, it feels really good but exactly when you need an advance feature for data wrangling it falls short every time or has bugs. I am all for euro office if they can deliver a good and usable alternative to MS office with backing of govt function.
    • Go on, I'll bite. How does windows (nice comment on an 'article' which doesn't actually involve it ) lock users out of their data then? Been using it since 3.1 back in 92 and not once have I been locked out of my data? Perhaps you mean Bitlocker? In which case the average user (who doesn't mess about) will have been forced to use a MSA, and in which case the recovery key would have been saved to said account..... If the user did happen to bodge around and not use an MSA then Bitlocker wouldn't have become live (as it cannot without a safe place to store the key) I want to point out Bitlocker and MSA are not connected and you can of course force it on without a safe place to store the key, but you do that with your eyes open. So your standard consumer who knows no better sets up an MSA, gets bitlocker and a recovery key stored off box, with a route to reset their password. All of this notwithstanding the fact, if your data is important, you back it up, no ifs, no buts, no-ones responsibility other than your own. Important data lives in at least two locations, one of which is offline and recovery is tested, otherwise that data wasn't really that important. Disks, fail, laptops get lost, phones end up down the toilet, tablets get stolen, if your only copy of data is on a single device you're doing it wrong.
