I now wonder if they're going to bother to maybe upgrade WMP or just move everything to the Video app, as long as they can get it to do all the things WMP could, then I wouldn't mind.  Right now I use MPC-HC though.

I, too, would love to see WMP updated. It's not too late to transform it into a Modern application, and make it available on Windows (Phone). Anything is better then these lame XBOX Music/Video apps.

MKV, FLAC, MP3Tag-like support for tagging files, removal of the idea that tracks are always part of albums (which is beyond stupid), ID3v2.4 support, and MAYBE then I will use any of MS' entertainment apps.

No no no.  Leave WMP alone (aside from updating the features).  You already have your metro video app (and as you stated) ... isn't very good.  Transforming WMP into a metro application will dumb it down in further.

The idea is to not dumb it down. Why do you have this stupid belief that rewriting something in WinRT would dumb it down?

Based on every metro application I've used.  Aside from "Video" being terrible...so is the metro IE, Money, Weather...etc.    Why would a metro WMP be any different?

What features are they missing exactly?

As a developer of a metro app, I can say it's every bit as functional as every desktop app I've ever made.

The platform's got little to do with how functional the app made using it is.

If I recall correctly (been awhile since I used it), metro IE doesn't support plugins, can not manage favorites (by folder/subfolder), tabs/buttons/menus have been removed, etc.  As with all metro apps, large amount of display real estate has been used for nothing (like the calculator).  Metro photo burner can not do simple task like burn to cd or email.  As you already stated, the video app plays videos but just sucks in general.  Just small examples that I can think of without firing up my 8.1 notebook.  Oh...and ads in some metro apps...and generally just an eyesore.

So this is damning. I did a system restore on the TP to clear an issue, and it ended up restoring to b9841, and now while I can still sign in with my @Live account, it doesn't see my account as an admin. Anyone know how I can change this?

how would you use codec for the missing stuffs then :s or is there codec pack for Modern Video app that i am unaware of?

How do you rename folders put on the side of the start menu?

The only way I've found is right-click on a shortcut in the folder and Select 'Open file location'  Then it opens up the Start menu in Explorer, and if you go up one level, you can rename the folder.  I know, it's kind of annoying that you have no options other than expand or collapse.

Pretty much.  You also can not group the metro apps into a folder....therefore you get a huge list under "All apps".  I'm fairly confident they will put in a option where you can right click and rename folders like Win 7.  Would be foolish not to.

WMP works very nicely as it is, turning it into another piece of Metro crapware would be all the incentive I needed to dump it and use an alternative.

Javik, that isn't even the issue.  There are alternatives for playing MKV files - even in ModernUI apps - or have you forgotten VLC (which is ALSO available as a ModernUI app)?

The issue here is first-party (as in out of the box) support for MKV as a file-format - nothing else.

Why are you (in particular) insisting on "do not advance"?

I use third-party file-players for all my video and audio playback - in other words, I don't use Windows Media Player for anything.

The big reason why I don't is because of the mishmash of codecs (both for audio AND for video), and far too many file-players, including, unfortunately for Microsoft, Windows Media Player, play favorites when it comes to codec support.

I can't blame ModernUI for the issues of Windows Media Player - and I don't.  (The issue isn't even unique to WMP - how good is the codec support in iTunes, for example?  I'm talking OS X - not Windows.)

ModernUI works where full-screen (or full-screen windowed) support makes sense - and not just tablets; I use Modern VLC on my notebook - which runs the Technical Preview for Enterprises as only OS.

Options, options, options - that is what the reason for MKV as an OOTB supported format is about.  Exactly what do you have against that?

Oddly enough, I don't have ANYTHING against it - and I'm one of the LEAST likely to even use it.  Yet you are criticizing ModernUI for something that is not even its fault.

how would you use codec for the missing stuffs then :s or is there codec pack for Modern Video app that i am unaware of?

You can write codecs for modern apps to use, it's a different process but it's what the VLC guys are doing for the modern version of their app.

The point is, with mkv and subtitle support, there's little that's actually missing at the native OS level that you need a codec pack for now.  Maybe some newer 10bit h264 files, but those aren't the majority of what's out there yet.   Look at the formats the media player app on the XB1 now supports with the newest OS update, that same list should be what is in Windows 10, built in, so that either WMP or the modern Video app will play all of those.

There are only a few reasons why I use MPC-HC over the built in players, one of them is that it will play mkv and it's subtitles without having to mess with any codec packs since it has it's own built in filters and spliters, etc.    Second reason I use it over the Videos apps is that it can run windowed while the other is fullscreen, this will change with Windows 10.   That's honestly about it, if they can have a Videos app playback my mkvs and their subs without issue like MPC-HC can, then that's one less app I need to install in the future.

Biggest complaint, regarding metro, is all the real estate the applications take up.  I mean...why in the heck do these applications have to be so dang huge?

The below captures are the smallest I could make the metro applications...and compared them with the "legacy" equivalents.

They don't have to be huge, there's some sort of rendering bug/limit in effect in these early builds that stops the window from being shrunk smaller, that however doesn't mean it will always be like that, it could be a scalling issue they haven't worked out yet.

    • Personally, I think these things are way over rated and way over priced, even at this price. I recently had Frontier Fiber installed with 2 of these devices and although they worked, I switched back to my own router and AP setup and get way better consistency on wireless speed than with Eeros. Wired speed seems to be more consistent also. Will be returning Eeros soon. I had told Frontier I didn't want them to begin with.
    • Yes, exactly what I have been thinking. Don't make the context menu simpler, make it smarter to learn what I actually use. And then, give me the ability to pin settings that I rarely use but need forget where they are.

    • Here's how to watch Summer Game Fest 2026 and what to expect from the 2-hour showcase by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June game showcase schedule is packed, and with the Sony event already behind us, it's time for the next major presentation to come in swinging. Later today, Geoff Keighley will be bringing the 2026 edition of Summer Game Fest live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the Summer Game Fest showcase livestream will be kicking off at 2 PM PT | 5 PM ET | 10 PM BST later today, June 5. The jam-packed show is slated to run for about two hours, with platforms like YouTube (4K at 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, or X being available for catching it. Like in previous years, separate streams featuring American Sign Language and Descriptive Audio are available on YouTube as well. Keighley has only dropped a few teasers about what gaming fans can expect to see at the show. This includes a new look at Star Wars Zero Company from EA, a major announcement from Guild Wars developer ArenaNet, more Clutch gameplay, and some sort of Sega presence. As for fan expectations, there is hype building about a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 reveal here, and we might see new details about announced games like Alien Isolation 2 as well. If you want even more games, keep in mind that right after the main kickoff event, the Day of the Devs showcase will begin its own festivities at 4 pm PT | 7 pm ET. This is focused entirely on upcoming indie games. Following this, the next major games showcase is slated to happen on June 7. Here, Microsoft is bringing the big guns with its Xbox Games Showcase and Gears of War E-Day Direct. Check out the full calendar for all of the June events over here.
