Microsoft is in the process of ?finding new ways to monetize the lifetime of [the] customer?

Windows 365 maybe?

Microsoft has yet to reveal the pricing structure for Windows 10, but the general consensus seems to be that the company is going to have to mix things up in order to reinvigorate its user base.
... it?s clear that Microsoft has an interest in subscription-based pricing, but the question is if Microsoft is ready for such a drastic transition.

If I can't buy Windows 10 outright, like Windows 7, Microsoft can color me gone.

If they offer a subscription option that doesn't mean they'll stop selling one time licenses, jumping to conclusions for no reason here. The same is the case with office, if you don't want office 365 you can still buy it like before.

Personally if a windows subscription has a good price and lets me upgrade my 4 PCs as part of the deal then I'm open to it, it's the same deals business gets through software assurance. Not to mention with them releasing newer versions quicker the subscription will let you get the newest version. People were fine paying the high TechNet and MSDN sub prices just to get all the windows licenses but a possible personal and low price sub has them freaking out now?l

I guess you will be able to buy it at $50 like Windows 7 or $10 per year for Windows 365. Personally I won't mind the later.

Microsoft has threatened to fleece the public with a subscription based operating system more than once and received huge consumer backlash because of it.

With windows 10 starting to go (obviously) backwards into the same anti-consumer territory shared with windows 8.x,, huge amounts of arrogance, billions of dollars in the bank to throw away and Nadella with his plans for a "new" microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't just *force* a subscription fleecing package on operating systems.

Linux is not an option for most consumers, OSX is not an option because of price based on hardware, windows 7 will eventually be forced out of the way with new hardware and software incompatibilities.

Microsoft has everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Microsoft has not said they are switching to a subscription based model, everyone is overreacting. Take a look at this week's Windows Weekly, where it is explained they are going to gain money on services, which does not necessarily mean Windows itself will be a service.

Windows 10 might become Freemium :- http://www.informationweek.com/software/operating-systems/windows-10-likely-to-go-freemium-analysts-say/d/d-id/1318043

Since Windows Phone is now offered for free & Windows 10 is also the version made for phones, this might be a possibility  :shifty:

Since when were "analysts" ever a good source? When have they ever been right?

They can spread all the FUD they want, but until there is a good source from the people who FOLLOW Microsoft for a living, and care to confirm with sources, meanwhile loving technology, then I will not care what they say.

Well it's all speculation now but, there were rumours about Windows as a service earlier this year....so,who knows? Microsoft will reveal it's pricing plans next year & only then we will know for sure if this freemium or Windows 365 type of OS really exists or not. Till then we can only speculate in a healthy manner, no need to get all defensive about anything :P

True, I wouldn't be surprised though if there is an option like a 'Microsoft 365' where as a consumer you get access to Windows plus Office for a set amount each month where there isn't the pressure to push out a massive release every so many years but instead have a rolling release where new features are gradually rolled out once they're ready rather than holding back features for the next release of Windows. Given how they're making Windows more modular with the various internal projects I wouldn't be surprised if that is the long game with individual products on perpetual licences still available like how they do with Microsoft Office. I'm more than happy to pay a subscription if there is enough benefit to be as a consumer to make it worth while.

Give me a good price and multiple copies and you have my attention.  They could just offer a low price for it as well and sell you more advanced features for those who need them, with a full enterprise version that has everything. I wouldn't mind that as a option as well if the feature breakdown makes sense and the pricing is good.

Windows 10 might not become Freemium. Source.

For someone that claims to be a "UX Designer", I have yet to see him design anything constructive. And to chew out Gabe Aul like that is highly inappropriate. Gabe's doing a darn fine job running the Insider's Program, and Microsoft is on the right track with Windows 10. It is the right blend of Windows 8 with the productivity features that made Windows 7 a worthy upgrade. To have a responsive OS such as Windows 10 is exciting. I have one OS and one store between my PC, tablet, and phone, and that is exactly what an OS needs to be today.

Windows XP is dead, and 2001 was 13 (soon to be 14) years ago. He needs to get over that. Sorry UXGaurav, but the times "are a changin".

The irony of this guy is strong, through. "MS could do with being less mean, less arrogant, less selfish". Gotta love the irony indeed.

By the way. Ladies and gentlemen, the Control Panel is officialy dead: http://pcportal.org.ru/forum/60-6215-11#115289.

Good, it's about time.

Only thing I would change is just call it "Settings," rather than "zPC Settings."

It'll be "Settings" by RTM. "z" is just a codename for the moment.

Also, won't be sad to see the end of the Control Panel. It's been more than time to replace it.

What I don't get is why he doesn't switch to some Linux distro? I mean, he has hated the direction Windows went starting with Vista, so he should know by now that they aren't going to reverse all the changes they've made so far.

Nice. Now the question is, will they expose advanced stuff there? Because in the current version of Settings, there is like 10% of what is available in the Control Panel.

Good, it's about time.

That's what they're going to call it in the end, just "Settings". This will match it with how it's always been called on the phone so we have the consistency there.  This should also mean the messy settings page in WP will finally get organized into the same categories we see in the screenshots.

The only thing left is for MS to have a API so that things can be added to Settings like they can be to the control panel.  There are hints of maybe having a specific area that can hold things from the OEMs or hardware makers, we'll see how it goes.

Only if they allow an easy way to also remove things from there. Really tired of some programs adding broken Control Panel items.

BATorrent features: Core .torrent file and magnet link support Resume data — picks up where you left off after restart Import torrents from qBittorrent Create .torrent files from any file or folder Sequential download mode Per-file priority control (skip, low, normal, high) Seed ratio limits with auto-pause DHT, PEX, UPnP, NAT-PMP RSS Auto-Download Subscribe to RSS feeds — automatically download new torrents as they appear Regex filters — match only what you want (e.g. 1080p|720p, S01E\d+) Per-feed settings — custom save path, check interval (5–1440 min), enable/disable Auto-download — matched items are downloaded automatically in the background Supports magnet links, .torrent URLs, and tags Tray notifications when items are auto-downloaded Duplicate detection — never downloads the same item twice Stremio Stremio Addon System pre-installed — works out of the box Auto tracker list from ngosang/trackerslist Streaming Play while downloading — stream video files before the download is complete Supports mp4, mkv, avi, mov, wmv, flv, webm, m4v, ts Auto-detects installed players (VLC, IINA, system default) VPN & Privacy Interface binding — lock torrent traffic to a specific network interface (e.g. tun0) Auto VPN detection — identifies VPN interfaces (tun, tap, WireGuard, Mullvad, NordLynx, ProtonVPN) Kill switch — automatically pauses all torrents if the VPN interface drops Auto-resume — resumes only the torrents paused by the kill switch when VPN reconnects Proxy support — SOCKS5 and HTTP proxy with optional authentication IP filtering — load P2P blocklists to block unwanted IP ranges Protocol encryption (enabled / forced / disabled) WebUI Remote management — control torrents from any browser at http://localhost:8080 REST API with JSON responses Add torrents via magnet link or .torrent upload Pause, resume, remove torrents remotely View peers and files per torrent Dark theme matching the desktop app HTTP Basic Auth with SHA-256 password hashing Configurable port and remote access (localhost vs 0.0.0.0) Interface 3 themes: Dark, Light, Midnight (bat/vampire aesthetic) Real-time speed graph Detailed panel with tabs: General, Peers, Files, Trackers Filter bar: search by name, filter by state (Active, Downloading, Seeding, Paused, Finished) Drag & drop .torrent files and magnet links Drag & drop reorder in torrent list System tray with notifications (download complete, kill switch events, RSS auto-downloads) Splash screen with bat animation Bilingual: English and Portuguese (BR), auto-detected from system locale Bandwidth Scheduler Alternative speed limits — set different download/upload limits on a schedule Time range — configure active hours (e.g. 01:00 to 07:00), supports overnight ranges Per-day control — choose which days of the week the schedule applies Automatically switches between normal and alternative speeds Media Server Integration Plex — automatically trigger library scan when a download completes Jellyfin / Emby — same automatic library refresh via API Configure server URL and authentication token/key in Settings System Cross-platform: Windows, Linux, macOS Auto-shutdown — automatically shut down PC when all downloads complete (60s cancellable countdown) Auto-update system (AppImage on Linux, installer on Windows, DMG on macOS) CLI arguments: pass .torrent files or magnet: URIs directly Keyboard shortcuts: Space to toggle pause, Ctrl+A to select all, Ctrl+O to open BATorrent 3.0.2 changelog: Phone pairing & WebUI The browser WebUI was reskinned to match the desktop app — same dark palette, Inter font, flat surfaces, the real BATorrent logo (it was a random bat before), and a proper magnet icon. It now looks like the same product, not a separate dashboard. Pairing is one tap and zero typing: the generated WebUI password is now copyable, and the QR code carries the credentials — scanning it from your phone logs straight in (no typing the IP or password), then drops the credentials from the address bar. Search Two new providers: RuTor (CIS sources, no login, via a public TorAPI relay) and Torrents-CSV. Results are sorted by seeders (healthiest first), and each search now times out after 15 s so one dead provider can't hang the UI. Files & trackers Per-file priority is back: right-click a file in the detail panel to set Skip / Low / Normal / High. Rename an individual file inside a torrent (double-click or the file menu), separate from renaming the torrent. Remove a tracker from a torrent (the ✕ on a tracker row); adding was already there. Smart Paste on Ctrl+V — paste a magnet, a 40-char info-hash, or a .torrent URL straight from the clipboard and it's added immediately (text fields still paste text normally). Covers & titles Anime fansub naming ([Group] Title - NN) now resolves to the right show. Audio channel layouts in titles (DDP5.1, 7.1, …) are stripped so they don't pollute cover matching. Under the hood The legacy QWidget interface is gone. QML had been the only UI since 3.0.0 (reachable old code lived behind a hidden --legacy flag); with parity confirmed, the entire QWidget layer — main window, every dialog, the theme manager — was removed (~13,400 lines). The four restored actions above were features that backend already supported but the QML port had never wired. macOS: the WebUI password hash moved out of the keychain into app settings, so launching the app no longer pops a login-keychain password prompt on unsigned builds. The actual password still lives in the keychain. Cleanup: ~400 orphaned translation strings and a batch of dead code removed; internal duplication collapsed; an ARCHITECTURE.md added for contributors. Unit / security / memory tests and the ASan/UBSan/TSan sanitizers stay green.
