Which is fine... for phones and small tablets. Not for the SP3 or touch screen laptops.

How is moving your hand to the center of the screen for task view easier than swiping in from the left edge to cycle through apps? Not better.

Taskbar? Now apps are going to use that back button more and more :( you will have to keep the bar open, app controls now clutter the UI with a hamburger menu.

Right action center >> this is better, but the time and date are not shown and what about battery and the volume and brightness and wifi from Charms? Much easier. Search from the right side? Easier with charms. There was a start button in charms, now it requires the taskbar :(

Move the task bar to the right or left side problem solved! LMAO

Move the task bar to the right or left side problem solved! LMAO

How does that solve anything? Explain. My SP3 does not need an old fashioned taskbar with a ton of wasted space anywhere on the screen where touch will be not ideal. Useless transparency effect? Auto-hiding the taskbar doesn't work anymore because it interferes with app controls and always appears on when Start is open.

The charms bar frequently would slide in when trying to close a window with a mouse. Good riddance. You can get most of its functionality by using winkeys - which I'm sure there are finger touching patterns/gestures to replicate those if you don't want to get a cheap bluetooth keyboard and use that. Or use the on screen keyboard's winkey.

The charms bar was a usability nightmare.

do you realise that there was an option to disable charms bar corner triggers? just because someone is ignorant about it, it's no reason to remove the whole feature. If Windows 8.1 had start menu like in early 10 builds and automatic settings switch upon installation based on the type of the system (no touchscreen - startmenu/ touchscreen present - startscreen, and so on), most of the problems with it would be gone.

It should not be there for mice, but for tablet mode yes. Opening the new notification center should be an option either by using the charms bar or without the charms and just sliding them in.

Hold on, you don't need to hit the task view button, the swipe from the left gesture still works, the button is there for mouse users really, and it's not even in the center, it should be offset to the left of the screen.

The back button isn't needed really, not on the tablet as much as the phone, but it's there to help you.  What current apps need it exactly? None that I know of, but future ported apps that hit the store might.  So they either put the back arrow in the app, or make it a universal button on the bar, either way you'll need to have one somewhere.

As far as the taskbar goes, I don't see this as any different from having to use, say, the app bar in 8.x, specially when you set it to be hidden and swipe up to show it/use it.  It's all about the default and where you want it.    The start button in charms was/is pretty redundant, most if not all windows devices have a hardware start button, look at the SP3 and the issues that caused, it's really not needed anymore.   Now you can just swipe up and hit the start button on the left, again, it's up to you what the taskbar does regardless of the default.

No for task view I was talking about how swiping in from the left shrinks all the windows into the center of the screen. Which, when holding a tablet,  is cumbersome.

For the back button, I'm sure I will get used to it, but the taskbar should not be the sole place for a back button since I many do not want a taskbar in tablet mode.

They need to fix the task view and notification center to make it more elegant.

My thoughts precisely as to how the task bar in 10 will evolve.  I can't see how the task bar will evolve in any other way than being more like Windows Phone.

This is what Sinofsky tweeted today: :)

Listening to anything Sinofsky has to say is just insulting to Windows users everywhere. He single-handedly ruined what could of been a great OS with Windows 8.

What? App bar on existing apps and taskbar in Windows 10 have completely different functions. How do I get the commands (that are hidden in appbar by default) on my apps that haven't gone with stupid hamburger menu yet? On mouse and keyboard with right click or context-menu button, in other words in one simple action. With touch though now I have to swipe from the top, tap that little hamburger menu in the corner, tap App bar. This is such a PITA, they could do a simple tap-and-hold (equivalent of right click, and I did feedback on it) to replace swipe from bottom gesture, but no they didn't bother.

How quickly people forget... he was also responsible for turning Vista into 7.

Anyone thinking that it was his sole responsibility that Windows 8 into what they perceive to be a half-cooked product know nothing about product management or managing software projects to a real deadline.

The last thing anyone wants to do is sit a Surface on a desk, and have to constantly flip their arm up and down to manipulate the screen. Why did the horizontal alignment have to be killed off, when it was ergonomically superior?

I want the restoration of Windows 8.1 functionality. There was no reason to remove it. I want to be able to use Windows 10 without the need for a mouse or stylus.

Jesus, they're serious about that taskbar crap, aren't they? SMH.

No, it's 2015, and tablets are everywhere.

The taskbar is compensating for the charms. If you use auto hide, it will work exactly like Windows Phone.

I'm actually kind of happy about the changes...because I do not want to be forced to use a tablet UI (8x) on my desktop.  I friggen hated horizontal scrolling, even more so than the start screen.  Vertical mouse scroll should ? horizontal page scroll.

You have waited a looong time for quoting that post, haven't you?

Ugh, if you hit volume and use scroll wheel, nothing happens. The mouse needs to be over the actual slider. I hate that.

I disagree with this completely. Windows needed to change to be successful, especially the UI and he pulled it off. Yes it was rough around the edges and whatnot, but considering he completely through out the old UI paradigm it was pretty impressive. He's also the guy behind Office 2007/W7, and he started the whole Building Windows 7/8 blogs and opening up the development process to users.

He probably had his issues, I did hear he was a micro-manager and tough to work for, but he did get ###### done when he was there so w/e.

The volume bar is rather large, is it a big deal? I just used my mouse and it wasn't... Maybe adjust your mouse sensitivity if it takes you too long to move yours! :D

Obviously it's not a big deal, but it's an extra movement, why do I have to move my mouse at all? If I click on the button and scroll up/down it should raise/lower the volume as expected.

haha...good ol' search.  You can kind a lot of gems...especially in this case "adapt", "desktop", "start menu", "not" comes out with a bunch of prior tirades.

    • Here's how to watch the Xbox Games Showcase today and what to expect by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June games showcase week has been a packed one, with everything from major presentations like Sony and Summer Game Fest to indie-focused reveals coming in almost every day. Now, it's almost time for another big one, with Microsoft bringing its Xbox Games Showcase back later today. This is a double feature too, with a Gears of War E-Day deep dive also being attached to it. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase is kicking off at 10 AM PT | 1 PM ET | 6 PM BST | 7 PM CEST later today, June 7. The event will be available to watch on the official Xbox YouTube (4K 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, Steam, Amazon Live, and other portals. Separate livestreams for American Sign Language and Audio Description will also be available. "This year marks 25 years of XBOX, and this Showcase is poised to be a true celebration, offering world premieres, new gameplay, fresh updates, and more for a swathe of projects we cannot wait to share," said Microsoft about this presentation. With a new CEO behind it that is pulling off some interesting moves, Xbox may have some surprises to reveal today. New looks at first-party games like Halo Campaign Evolved from Halo studios, Fable from Playground Games, InXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution, Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons II, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward are to be expected here. We may finally get to see the new Blade from Arcane Studios in action and a new Persona game from Atlus at the showcase too. Surprise announcements may also arrive from other Microsoft-owned studios like Bethesda, MachineGames, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Rare, World's Edge, or Blizzard. Considering how every new release nowadays is staying away from November and December to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI's release, any launch dates Microsoft announces will probably skip those months as well. Once the Xbox Games Showcase ends, Microsoft will immediately kick off the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. This deep dive into the upcoming prequel from The Coalition should attach gameplay footage and perhaps a release window to the highly anticipated project.
    • People in the '50s and '60s had the same attitude, and we're still here over a half century later.
    • So after some fiddling I was able to get it to run at a pretty stable 30FPS. I'm slightly surprised about how much fiddling I had to do to get there though given what I thought was reasonable hardware: Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics Memory: 16 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon 780M Graphics Graphics Processor 2: AMD Radeon RX 7700S I think I could do it better if I use Linux rather than Windows, Windows RAM usage is stupid without stripping the system down. But once I got it working in a reasonable state, it was so awesome! I felt like a new Bond! If anyone has any advice to get things going a bit smoother FPS-wise, I'd appreciate it.
