It's this.

(Actually the upload should be at ~300 as well, not sure why not yet.

And that's for ?32 a month, in that price is also 70 TV channels and a landline (which I dont use)

Not too shabby for that price huh?

I hate the OP.   The internet in Aus is a bit of a joke (and all of the ignorant politics surrounding it). I've been having issues with my adsl connection lately. I'm getting about a third of what I should be.

You're in Estonia, OP?

I get about 8 mbps in the Mountains just outside Sydney.

32?? That's a bit expensive. I pay about 7? for this:

Which is practically pretty ok for my slow HDD. Slowest option is best option, there is never enough seed to download with such high speeds anyway. As for the rest - I don't really need it this fast, 5Mb/s totally gets the work done.

Nice speeds!

I moved from the UK where I was getting around 40MB with Sky but could have got 150MB with Virgin and came to Ireland where ,..

Where I get this :)

Costs me about 20e a month but I have a TV and telephone package as well that bumps the price up to around 70e

Depends on how many people are in your home using it concurrently. For me there's usually Netflix on the TV, YouTube on someone's device, a lot of random web traffic, and if I want to play a multiplayer game I wouldn't be able to with the cheapest connection here... that's 12/1 for $50/month with a 100GB monthly cap! As it is I pay $180/month for 250/10 with a 500GB cap.

I only get 330KB/s max at my place (which is in a metro area), thanks to 50+ year old copper cabling and being over 2km away from the nearest exchange (attenuation levels must be pretty high).

Fiber is a must, no matter what party is in charge of the country!

It's improved slightly over time though - I can now play 480p YouTube video without having to wait for buffering (perhaps video compression has improved on YouTube's side), and upload files faster (been using the same hardware for the last 2-3 years).

There are obvious reasons why USA is lacking in fast internet speeds.

1.)  We didn't get the crap bombed out of us in any war forcing us to redo our infrastructure.
2.)  There are some pretty rural areas
3.)  GREED.  Telecom companies like Comcast, ATT, Time Warner pay money to Washington to keep the gov't from forcing all fiber since this would cost them money & they would much rather force customers to pay for old stuff already in the ground.
ATT is the worst about this, their UVerse (which they claim is fiber and its not) is still using old phone lines.

However, Google and Verizon have really helped the broadband landscape.  By showing the American public that fiber networks are not as cost prohibitive as the other telecoms want everyone to think, they are offering speeds that are very respectable (Gigabit Ethernet) - subsequently, even ATT has begun to offer their Gigapower Gigabit internet

However, Google's Gigabit is the most reasonable in terms of cost @ $70/mo
Verizon offers 500/500 Fios @ $300/mo
ATT has not released their pricing for GigaPower yet (I dont think they have at least)

On topic - I love my country -- wouldnt want to live anywhere else.... well maybe a tropical island ;)

There are some pretty rural areas here in Ireland - 90% of the country is bog land and fields, plus the total population of the entire nation will be less than one of the smaller states in the US.

The US, seeing as you are a super power, needs to pull it's finger out and sort it :D

Man, i'm just jelly right now with some of you. I moved to Europe (Germany) and was looking forward to the sweet speeds and cheap pricing and so far my location don't have it. I will be moving though so i'll be back to having first world problems soon :p

100Mbps can't come soon enough!!

Oh wow, didnt notice there were so many replies already.

Well, when my ISP finally sorted out some things this is what it looks like now

And since they didnt notice it themselves I get 1 month discount to 25? kek.

I'm in the S.E. suburbs of Melbourne and I was getting about 8mbps, now it's hovering ~3.. and 3 is high. I am thinking about just getting cable and saying goodbye to adsl.

I'm in the N-E suburbs and I typically get 70-80mbps downloads on speedtest on optus cable. upload is probably around 10mbps though. This is on the 100mbps 500gb plan @ $110/month (includes unlimited phone plan and some digital tv channels I think)

Fiber is connected up in my area, but they lock the speed at 100mbps which is what I already have anyway and it's more expensive for the data allowances so no point in changing for me.

I never got the idea on caps..what do they win with it? Nothing, they already overcharge you as it is.

You pay for "up to" that speed.

Yes.  They guarantee 18-25 Mb/s.  This test was on a GOOD day.  Average has been around 8 Mb/s.  I was getting 25.5 Mb/s Down and 3 Mb/s up for a long time.  Then they did some 'upgrades to fix issues' and since then it hasn't worked right.

best two speed test websites websites i have found

1. SpeedOf.Me is an HTML5 Internet speed test. No Flash or Java needed! It is the smartest and most accurate online bandwidth test.

2. http://testmy.net Simple, to make sure you're getting what you pay for. This speed test is useful if you feel a connection slow down or want to see how your Internet is performing. This isn't like any other broadband speed test. TestMy's proprietary method is proven to help identify issues other speed tests fail to detect. The TMN Speed Test shows your true speed.

Both of those are highly inaccurate for me. I get speeds of 8.1Mbps and 57Mbps respectively, on my 150Mbps connection.

    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
