Why would it be canceled?  lolwut?   Something like this, with the right budget, needs time to get things going, sets to be built and so on, why the rush anyways?

Because it's suffered countless setbacks, and production leaks have fans questioning whether or not they'll even watch this show.

I'm not surprised a show this complex has some setbacks, specially if you plan something new, like not being centered on one ship or one crew, from what I remembered that was the plan unless it's changed.     It's easier when you only have to make one bridge, one hallway, one transporter room, and something that looks like engineering.   It takes longer if you plan to make multiple versions of that because you plan on having different ships, plus I expect your Klingons and so on, I really doubt CBS or Paramount kept any of the old sets around, normally they tend to break sets down when they're done with movies and tv shows.

There's no reason they have to rush this either, let them take their time and get it right.

Countless? I can think of maybe one, possibly two. Fuller leaving was probably the only setback I can think of, and probably the reason for the delay. Other than that, scripts are wrote and the pilot is basically wrapped up. I believe the majority of the season is basically taking shape and it's standard operating procedure from here on out. Hardly a show in shambles from "countless" setbacks.

And yet, through all their protestations... They still will!

And they will whine about every single little thing all over the internet, they will badmouth every single inconsistency, pull apart every plot point as if they solely own the ability to explain Trek.

And then they will sit and cry when it gets cancelled.

Exactly, from the latest news I saw, from March, they're filming episode 2 now and the pilot, which is more like a 90min movie, is going through post-production, expect a lot of CGI work going into this.   I read that the first season is going to be 13 episodes total, one arc, none of the old episodic stuff from the older TV series, which I'm fine with personally.

I also read that season 2 is already greenlit and that CBS and Netflix are going to wait and see how the first two do before they sign off on a 3rd one.

TBH, if they change too many things, I don't see fans sticking around that long.

From what I've seen, concept art, and the "Klingons" picture, it seems to me that Discovery is trying too much to change everything to kinda break away from the geeky/nerdy Trek that once was. They want to move to a more edgy Trek like the JJ movies. That's not going to do much for the fan base.

Star Trek: Discovery has cast The Office alum Rainn Wilson in the role of Harry Mudd, Variety has learned. It is unknown how many episodes Wilson will appear in at this time.

If the show follows events in the big Federation vs Klingon war and so on, then it should be more "edgy" and less exploration, I mean if it's war time then what do you think people on these ships are going to feel like and what the mood will be like?

I'm all for a smaller season with one big plot instead of 22-24 episodes of stand alone episodic stuff that we used to get before, that time has passed and we really don't need to go back there.  We've got enough episodic cop shows on TV right now, we don't need trek to do it and end up as the sci-fi space procedural show in a sea of procedural shows.  It should be more character driven and showing us the development of these new people through a big event like a war.   I think it was a great move to make the main character NOT the captain of the ship like before, we can get more character growth now instead of starting with characters that are already more or less developed which means writers have to come up with other, often tired out, plots for episodes over and over.

The visuals are good, story sounds interesting as well, I figure if they're doing a prequel series before TOS that it'd have to be Klingon heavy, I expect many fights, CGI is probably what's holding this back.

I imagine they're still putting finishing touches on CGI. It's one of the last things they do.

So, I'll be honest here. That looked horrible to me. The way its being shot, and the CGI (which I know isn't final) being used the way it is - it literally looks like a fan film. I seriously got vibes like that especially when they were looking at whatever it was on the view screen. I just don't like the look of it. And the sound is off also, not sure why though.

And, I see they've inherited the JJ Lens Flare disease. How awesome.

I think the difference is in going with full CGI compared to the old style of using different scaled models, it gives you another feel to it.  Still, using the models limits the shots they can take, the angles and so on.   Since we still don't have a release date for this, it'll be hard to say how the final will look.  I agree with the lens flare bit, that shouldn't be in it.  I was more than happy when Beyond dropped it, and I'm ready for a 4th movie personally.

hmmm, doesn't look too bad from the trailer. looks way more serious than the new movies.

aww come on, the fan stuff is wayyyyyyyyy more cringe inducing.

After watching the "first look" trailer I think it's quite obvious now why Fuller left the show.  CBS was pushing for the "JJ" look and feel (the lens flare,... ugh....)  and Fuller wanted nothing to do with it.

Plus, after being a devoted fan since before I can remember, seeing every single Star Trek film in its original run in theaters except the reboots, and the fact I haven't even bothered to see the latest film at all.  I think I can safely say, Star Trek is dead now for me.

It's a sad time for Trek when the up coming Star Trek parody by Seth McFarland looks closer to Star Trek then actual Star Trek...

at least the ship interrior look more enterprise than the movies...though we haven't seen the engine room yet...i hope it's not a brewery.

I doubt it, with how long they're taking with this thing and all the sets they've shown them building, it's probably something like the enterprise engine room, but a little bit bigger.  I mean the prequel show, not the ship specifically.   That said, I like the design of the warp core from the 2nd and 3rd Star Trek movies, that sphere design makes more sense to me than what they used in the TV series and older movies.

This is science fiction after all, it's not meant to be "realistic". The sets of the new movies are just plain lazy, they are meant to have a bigger budget over a tv series like enterprise, ds9, voy, tos, tng, yet they created sets that looks very un-trek-like. granted, they are slowly improving with each new movie (in some areas) but mostly it still looks very generic sci-fi, set design-wise.

i don't care if it makes more sense to have some thing that resembles a type of reactor from real life, trek has never been about "realism" it's always been about looking to the future, imagining would could be, not what should be, and the designs they used for TOS through to ENT and the old movies were all high quality and you could tell a lot of time and effort went into them.

all they did with Trek 09 was rent out a brewery for the engine room, add some extra pipes and computer panels (either by basic props or cgi or both), it was lazy and uninspiring. i'll say again, the new movies work as standalone sci-fi action flicks, but the only things they have in common with star trek are;

races, character names, ship names, planet names, basically things in name only.

i just with they stopped messing with the source material so much in star trek, you don't see disney buggering up star wars, changing everything.
