[Official] Star Trek: Discovery Thread

That's right out of the Star Trek Motion Picture, Spock does the same thing at one point, though it's more flashy in Discovery, it's not exactly something new to the show.

There were many such nods to earlier Trek in Discovery. I kinda like it and try not to worry too much about the nitty gritty. Star Trek has never been about hardcore scifi.

Genuinely enjoyed it.  It got straight into things, the pacing felt like a movie, the tone was set and I've basically no issues with anything shown.  Considering how weak some Trek series have started, I'd call this a success.  And to those who complain "This isn't MY Trek" - you're right, it's not.  Bye, I guess?

IMO, such people are not actually fans of Trek itself, but are fans of the particular series of it they saw, be it TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT.  Myself, I love ALL of Trek and will gladly watch any new show.  I even watch the various fan productions...  Hell, I even enjoyed Enterprise. ALL of it, not just the last season.  Scott Bakula made a pretty good captain and didn't deserve his run to be cut short or vilified so much!

If you're a true fan of Trek, you won't care about the shortcomings of a new show, especially one so new.  You'll just be happy that Trek is back!

(Y)  Looking forward to the next episode.  Like STD (sorry, going to say it like this..haha) better than the Orville.  Yes, cannot compare both but the effects on STD are better on the Orville and so far there is a good story/main plot.

Don't for get 3.5 in floppy disks....at least that is what they look like.

I thought they were like a updated form of punch cards? :p

Really great way to nail a coffin shut. Not even JJ was dumb enough to say lets completely forget the back story when he took over Star Wars. Imagine if he had and needed to rely on completely new audience.

The overall reaction has been great.  So the coffin is not nailed shut.

The viewing figures have been great.  So the coffin is not nailed shut.

You can opt to not watch it and sit and watch your old Trek DVDs and lament how that's "your Trek".  So the coffin is not nailed shut.

And JJ relying on a completely new audience?  Much like he did with his Trek reboot - that well received, financial success of a reboot...

I wouldn't expect Orville to have top of the line effects.. It IS a comedy show after all. Trek though, needs to have them.

Since you bring the Orville into it, I like that one as well, it's not like you have to like one or the other or something.  But one thing I want to point out here, some of the hate going towards discovery seems to be how it's trying to be too politically correct or something.  I have to ask these people, did they bother watching the 3rd episode of the Orville yet or not?   That whole ep was PC stuff down your throat with some jokes tossed in so it didn't get too heavy.

Who's a few hollywood types who never say anything is less than brilliant. You could probably do yourself a favour by checking comments on Youtube for example it's being savaged pretty badly with some people longing for S3-4 Enterprise opening credits.

I like to Orville as well and will continue to watch it.

YouTube is not the best place in the world to poll for opinons on a new show... It's full of trolls...

For all the good JJ did on his Star wars movie, you do understand that just like with this new Trek show, even that movie has a number of star wars fans hate on it, how it's not original, just retelling the A New Hope story over with different characters and so on?    It's not like TFA was a huge fan fav, not by a long shot.  It did great at the box office, sure, because it was a new star wars movie after such a long time and everyone wanted to wash the prequels out of their minds so bad it seems.

I'd be willing to bet they have a far lower budget also

They were memory wafers if I remember correctly.

Everything was big back then, except skirts which were very short.  heh.

You did take note of what I posted didn't you?

The exact same could be said for Discovery given Star Trek has been absent from TV for a decade however,

I am not referencing anyone in Hollywood, but the fact you are and your tone surrounding them shows your absolute bias here.

Look at aggregation sites, look at the reflected appreciation for the series.

YouTube comments?  Again the fact you reference them says so much more about you than it does the 2 episodes shown.  Absolute cliche...

No it has not.  May stations still air re-runs, and their target is not people who have seen it before.  DVD sales, or Blue Ray sales still maintain numbers.  Trek hasn't "been" anywhere, there's been a market still.

I liked the short skirts.  In TNG, the outfits were tight.

I guess in TNG there were going for a more equal uniform setup, but then again so did they in the movies starting with ST2 and on, skirts were gone and females had the same uniforms as guys, which makes more sense because it's like any type of military  force that uses uniforms and that type of command structure.

    • Google DeepMind published a document on June 18, 2026, that may be the most consequential admission yet from a frontier AI lab: alignment training alone cannot guarantee that AI agents will remain under human control, so structural containment must be built before more capable models arrive.............. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/318758/20260620/google-deepmind-ai-control-roadmap-when-alignment-fails-defense-depth-takes-over.htm
    • I've got a SoundBlasterX G6 that I use in my streaming setup. Sounds great to me and I've had zero issues with the ancient software package so far in Win11. That G6 has 7.1, Dolby, fully working SPDIF and since it's a USB device it's outside of my rig so I don't have to worry about EMF distortion. Looks like for now this is a pass for me as I think I have better hardware....
    • How do you connect 5.1 Speakers to this thing?
    • I agree with both of you... It's absolutely imperative that science is completely based on actual proven facts and hard evidence and is not considered dogmatic in any way. Science is not a religion and it will never be, and that's exactly how it's supposed to be.
    • I'd basically agree. The only point I would add is to be careful not to treat science as a religion, complete with priests, dogma, and blasphemy. Humans are highly susceptible to religious-oriented ways of thinking since it aids in forming communities of like-minded people. The problem is that when this happens, nobody wants to be ostracized from the group by saying that a deeply-held idea is wrong. Science and "peer review" are not immune to this behavior, unfortunately. In the end, finding truth is our own responsibility and we can't depend on others to hand it to us. Skepticism is key, along with curiosity and the willingness to critically evaluate and consider ideas both new and old.
