Yeah, the Klingon fight scene seems pretty much dialed-in and it looked like Ash's weapon was CG instead of an actual weapon/prop at times.

Let's add to Michael's stiff acting and bring in T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) 😛

Still much better than the fights seems in TOS.  I watch those from time to time and just laugh.  I still do enjoy them though.

She was raised Vulcan, stiff comes with the role I feel. No different than Vorik in VOY, or Valeris on ST:6. I'm not sure that's bad acting tbh. Although maybe she could use some work. TWD she seemed fine, feel it's just her character. Tuvok was also stiff.

You can't really compare 1960's fight choreography with modern... Things have come a long way since then, and that fight wasn't even convincing by 60's standards!

That and she had nothing to be cheerful about in most of Season 1.   She had to keep in character while being with the enemy in the alternate universe as well.   Those were a fun bunch if of people.   Hopefully they keep developing her character in in S2.

Yes, it was pretty much a joke.

So yeah I just saw the episode. Certainly not a good episode, but "one of, if not the worst episode of Star Trek EVER!"  um, no. All these guys on the interwebs (Nerdrotic for example) literally blowing their gaskets over this episode, is just incredible. As mentioned above there have been HORRIBLE episodes of Trek previously. It happens, you have to take the bad with the good sometimes. And I'm a life long Trekkie since I was about 3 or 4 years old so we are talking 40+ years now so I'm fully aware of the really, really bad crap we've had to deal with over the decades now. Some of the newer fans have NO idea :D

Either way, I am interested to see where this Red Angel crap goes, if only that it fixes canon because it seems that's the way they are going even if Kurtzman wasn't allowed to use the Red Angel storyline to fix everything apparently (according to recent reports from the writers and Kurtzman himself in fact). Especially that Section 31 ship, I mean really writers? It literally looked like a ship that could travel through time and stop a stranded Starship from exploding the Sol system...........

Nerdrotic is a prime example of doing it for the $$$. He’s emerged as one of the cesspools for haters and is cashing in on it. I expect every episode this season to be “one of the worst ever”.

Incorrect. The original showrunner (Bryan Fuller) was changed out before the end of season 1, hence the rushed termination of the Klingon War storyline, and replaced with Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg. Then they changed AGAIN shortly into season 2 because, supposedly, the new showrunners went rather over budget on the first few episodes and were also apparently being abusive towards the writing team. Alex Kurtzman took over from them so that makes 2 changes for a total of 3 different show runners.

No wonder it was bad. Anything Bryan Fuller touches turns to ######. Pretty much anything I see now with his name on it I don't bother watching because it isn't going to last past 2 or 3 seasons.  Shows that had a lot of potential that got cut short were Dead like Me, Pushing Daisies, Heroes. I am pretty sure he was involved with the second half of Voyager which is why it started to get super weird after a point.

Bryan Fuller was axed before the first episode even aired.

Alex Kurtzman has basically been No. 1 since his departure. Although a few of his underlings got the axe for being ###### people. You could tell in the After Trek interviews that the two people that left were lousy people.

All in all though he is in the captains chair, and is also front runners for the other new series.

Anyone claiming dramatic turn over, or how Discovery is in the toilet is kidding themselves. CBS wouldn't be tapping the same talent to do other shows if they felt Kurtzman was inadequate.

Personally I don't get all the negativity. People can criticise the Klingons in DIS all they like but the Klingon episodes of TNG and DS9 were typically much worse. Peoople seem to have a rose-tinted vision of the franchise.

For what it's worth I'm really liking DIS and feel it has a lot of potential, with some episodes already favourites of mine. Some people just want to see the show fail.

Can't wait until season 3 is officially confirmed just to make the haters ###### their pants. Sounds like internally it's all but assured, and planning is well underway, with section 31 one series debuting after the season 3 finale.

The problem is the Orville is better. It just feels more like star trek than this show did which is why everyone is raising so much hell over it.

What Star Trek is, is different to everyone. To me Discovery is Star Trek (especially the last part of the 1st season) this season. ALL Trek shows have to find their footing, it has to be given a chance. If not, and the vocal minority online get their way, we won't have any Star Trek for freaking 50 more years.

Maybe I missed something at the end but what was wrong with the section 31 ship exactly?  I think an argument can be made that section 31 probably gets all the new tech before everyone else, so if their ship is more advanced than the rest of star fleet, to me, that makes sense.

That the ship existed is the problem many had. The section 31 now portrayed is like so many other aspects nothing like the previous portrayal which was highly covert & decentralised in Discovery they're flying around in a super ship and handing out badges, but the badges are black so that'll leave everyone else guessing who they are

I don't know, the Orville is more star treky in its format, it is episodic, moving from one short story to the next, it is brighter and takes itself less seriously, but even less than old trek did, and it doesn't try to show us "perfect people" like the TNG-era shows did. Discovery instead feels like it's happening in the star trek universe, but it's a completely different format, and it takes itself perhaps too seriously. I like both.

I also think the rose colored glasses thing is at work here, because every star trek show had its problems. TNG was my favorite, and yet so much of the 7 seasons is wasted on dull episodes, stupid premises, and Wesley "deus ex machina" Crusher.

Exactly this.  He posts what he knows will get the nerds up in arms and feed them enough rage to come back and agree with his next post.  And make money from the ad revenue.  Alex Jones of Trek.

As for "One more episode like this and I'm done" - does that include trying to tell everyone what "real Trek is"? ;)

You might as well just stop watching already, you're determined to hate it lol. How'd they put everyone back together in that TNG episode where barclay turned into a spider, or in threshold where janeway and pairs ended up as lizards. Crazier things have happened on Trek than a fungus getting ripped out of someone, gore and guts free lol.

I had issues with those eps too.  I can't stand a deus ex ending...

Perhaps look up Mr SciFi on YouTube.  He's a professional scifi writer for TV, and has written many many episodes of various types of Trek personally as well as lots of other scifi shows.  He knows what he's talking about and, though he doesn't hate on Discovery like Nerdrotic does, he still doesn't like the show very much. That's from someone who knows Trek better than pretty much any mere fan does.

For him, the biggest problem isn't the writing or the acting, its the personal relationships between the crew.  He has a point too.  Think about it for a moment.  With every other Trek series ever made, I could name the bridge crew AND their actors after just a couple of episodes., and I can also do it with The Orville's cast too.  With Discovery, I can name three characters... and only two of the actors.  that's not good.  It means I have no empathy for them; I don't care about them one way or another.

If your prime cast aren't memorable or likeable, you have a problem that goes beyond mere writing or acting...

Interesting... it's true that the relationships between characters are a bit lacking. I mean, it feels like each one of the "main" characters has his own little storyline that's disconnected from the others. Now I can't quite talk about liking the characters themselves because it's a matter of taste and it usually looks like I disagree with everyone on that aspect.

They've basically failed to introduce their characters to us properly.  We know some things about Seru and Burnham, and Pike too but it was classic TOS that taught us that. We know sod all about the others.  Who's the chick with the Borg-type implants, what's the story with said implants? Who's the android and why is there an android?  Who are all the other folks hanging around on the bridge?  Who's the Chief Medical Officer or the Chief Engineer?  All this stuff other Trek series made damn sure to tell you so that you could empathise with them, but Discovery just haven't bothered beyond 2 or 3 of the cast.

Even Enterprise, the poorest rated Trek show before Discovery, took the time to introduce you to the crew and tell you a bit out who they are. That built a bond with the audience so that we were able to weather the stumbling around for the first few seasons until it finally got really great in Season 4, just in time to get cancelled.  That was a damned shame IMO, but should have taught CBS that just maybe the fans aren't interested in a Trek prequel?

With Discovery, I don't care about anyone on the crew, so why would I be upset if the show gets axed?

On this, I ABSOLUTELY agree.  They interact but have no relationships.  I would say when we have seen relationships, they are simply two people who happen to be in the same place at the same time.  There's no familiarity.  No Kirk, Spock and Bones.  No Picard and Bev Crusher. No Garrick and Odo.  No Doctor and Seven.

And on this I disagree.  There's a LOT of material here to play with, and people have conjecturalised about it all.

But look at Star Wars:  Prequel trilogy vs Rogue One.  There's more than one way to make a prequel story.  ENT handled some of it quite well, but a lot of it quite poorly.  DIS remains to be  seen, but it's also a show for a different audience.

So I will go back to this:  If you cling to "established" Trek like it's your baby and see it all through rose tinted shades, are so hung up on cannon that you can't get past a show made decades after the original having different tech - this really probably isn't for you.

The people who cite ENT about being the poorest rated are the same who take issue when I note how Into Darkness is joint highest rated.
