Episode name, affectionately called: Sarek.  S3 E23.

To which Picard later disclosed those feelings to Spock in Unification pt 2... and we see Spock reel back from how intense Sarek's feelings truly were.

Thanks. I  remember the episodes, but not the names and was to lazy to look it up.  Glad there are bigger Trek nerds than I out there.  And I meant that as a compliment.

Appreciated.

I look things up, not to correct anyone.. but to make sure my memory still serves me.  Names escape me, and even though I can remember plots of books/movies and possibly characters, names of such elude me even on my best days.

Took me some time to catch up but I think I finally did, so this might have been brought up before, but... Saw the Baul / Ba'ul / spell it like you want. I kinda like the alien/horror vibe they were going for when it's revealed, but the effects looked cheap and off for some reason

Just a rip off of Armis, the oil slick monster from the TNG episode "Skin of Evil" where Tasha is killed.

Just watched the newest ep, very interesting.

Spoiler

It seems like whatever this enemy from the future is, if you go by what the next ep preview shows, it's got it's hooks into section 31.  Also the whole idea about changing the current timeline is interesting to, could be a good way to bring things back closer to canon by the end of the season and into season 3.

Just IMO of course, but using time travel to fix broken story lines is just an excuse for bad writing.  It's always annoyed me, even in TNG and DS9 when they over-used time travel in their stories.  It's lazy story telling.

I thought about that too !

Yeah I get what you're saying. I don't like time travel in general, as soon as they started mentioning it I was disappointed.

This episode for me was the first episode of discovery that felt like star trek, actually it's the first episode that felt like an actual episode of a programme... scenes where well paced , they took their time, there was other characters development,  It's basically what I wanted, especially  if you compare it to last week which seemed like two episodes in one ... I enjoyed it, now I need a lie down

Ok, I watched the latest episode different than most.  Was it accurate to say that the "previously on Star Trek" aired showing the TOS episode what happened?  If so, that was pretty damn cool.

Yeah, that was a nice touch to start the episode, I liked it.

As far as the whole time travel bit, nothing new for trek and still the best way to change a timeline to be more canon.

I'd go further and say showing bits of the original pilot was a stroke of genius, so well done there to the writers and director!

I just hope it works.  Things ARE definitely improving.  Quite liked the character dynamic going on between Spock and Michael. He's clearly quite ###### at her and I presume they're going to keep that up as a reason why she's never mentioned by Spock in TOS etc.  I wonder though, if they're going to stretch things and mention Sybock. Kind of odd that there's no mention at all of him, as he SHOULD have been around in the childhood flashbacks.

Sending the writers to canon school was clearly a wise choice on CBS's part. Even PJ on Egotastic Funtime is starting to enjoy it.

Yea, had be scratching my head a little.  Thought, are they showing the right episode?..haha

Sybok was a child between Sarek and a Vulcan princess before Amanda, so it might not be strange that he wasn't even in the household, or childhood flashbacks.

I also really enjoyed this episode, I also loved that they did the TOS intro and the first shot after that was Anson Mount's Pike on the Discovery, which really isn't a world away from TOS Pike Jeffrey Hunter's looks, which makes the casting even more believable :)

But he was also present during Spock's childhood, so.. yeah. What we have here is a situation caused by the writers probably not knowing about Sybok, compounded by everyone in the entire Trek fandom having done their best to forget Star Trek V ever happened. :p

We don't know how long or how frequently Sybok was around, but I bet it wasn't often since he was probably off with his mother and from what I remember shunned because he gave in to his emotions and not logic.

On another note I think st5 gets hated on too much. In my opinion it hits all the trek points, going to a new place no one has gone to before, running into a new entity etc.  It also has a good chunk of character development even after all those years, heck Kirks line to Sybok about "I need my pain" has stuck with me since I first saw the movie.

Just saw the newest ep, good character development, it also seems like we've answered a few questions while, as always, bringing up some new ones.

Spoiler

It seems like the big bad from the future is the control AI that's evolved and that the red angel is one of the main characters time traveling to try and stop it in the past etc.   Who that is we'll probably find out either in the next episode or the one after.

Spoiler

Well, Airiam said something along the lines that Burnham was the reason why things were happening.  I forget the exact line/quote..

Spoiler

Still kinda shocked they killed off cyborg lady (I keep forgetting her name sorry! lol) especially in that way. That was some dark ass stuff. I just hope Nerdrotic and his minions don't go nuts and say Discovery was trying to airlock someone like Orville did a few weeks ago, ugh.

As for the control AI, its a nice way to tie in future Section 31 stuff aka why they went underground so badly by DS9 era events etc. I'm still curious if they are going to go with the safe bet and have Burnham be the red angel. Cyborg lady said right before she got spaced that everything revolved around her. Which also ties into the whole "the timeline is messed up cuz Burnham lived" theory.

Spoiler

Airiam is the cyborg.  And really hope Burnham is not the red angel.  To predictable really.  I replied earlier and couldnt remember exactly what Airiam said to Bernham...so thanks for that.

Spoiler

Having her be the red angel would be pretty obvious, there's the theory that it's future Spock but I don't think that holds up either.    If it was either of them, when current Spock did his mind meld I think he would've been able to tell.   Anyways, it does make things interesting and it's good for a overarching plot to keep you guessing till the time is right.

I'll be so disappointed if Burnham is the Red Angel. Or Spock. They've continually inferred that it's tech is from about 500 years in the future, so I've got hope that it's neither of them. Would be an interesting tie in to either Braxton/Relativity or Daniels org. The big bad being AI is also a let down. The storyline had a lot going for it, and AI going nuts is kind of a cop out.

Was nice getting a Voyager reference to Kadis-kot, the game Seven and Naomi played.

Except that the AI is Section 31's control AI and thus easily ties into several issues people have with the show as it is. Specifically S31 itself being so out in the open, and this would also help explain away a lot of little things as well. I still kinda hope that someone from the future S31 is helping this AI in the Discovery era and its someone we know already. But that's unlikely.

Well, you can certainly see the difference when Frakes is directing.  Damned good episode, that one!

Airiam is going to be back in some form. Guys, this is Star Trek. No one really dies. Let's look at the history of "deaths" of important characters:

Everyone knows Spock was/is one of the most lovable, favorite characters in Star Trek. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, they killed Spock. Before Spock died, he transferred (backed up) his Katra ( his mind, memories) into Doctor McCoys mind with a mind meld after he knocked him unconscious.

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock they brought him back to life and transferred all his mind and memories back to him on Vulcan. In Star Trek: Nemesis DATA sacrificed himself to save The Enterprise but not before transferring his mind and memories earlier to his prototype brother B4. In a sense, DATA was gone and not gone because B4 is actually DATA but not as advanced as he was. So in a sense, DATA is still alive.

In Star Trek: Into Darkness, the same formula in Trek II and III was repeated. Kirk died and he was brought back.

In Discovery, the doctor was killed and brought back and Captain Georgio was killed and brought back.

Now, in Discovery we see the same Trek II formula being repeated, but in a different way. Airiam downloaded all her memories and mind stuff to Discovery's computer, as if she knew he fate was going to be a bad one. She essentially "backed up" herself. Airiam was ejected out into space through an airlock. Yes, she appeared as if she went "offlilne" and died, but her body is still out there, floating in space. Who is to say her body is not going to be recovered by the AI, the Red Angel or someone else and brought back to life somehow? Anyone remembers V-Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Voyager was recovered/grabbed from Space by an entity and turned into a menace, so yes, anything is possible in the Star Trek world.

Airiam is a very important character. She is a fan favorite, like DATA was to STNG and Spock to TOS, so I seriously doubt we have seen the end of her. Maybe the actress that plays her is taking a break to go do another project? It is very possible, but one thing I am sure of is that we have not seen the last of her.

And one more thing: For all we know, she could be The Red Angel. Ever thought of that?  Saru did say The Red Angel is humanoid. Airiam is/was 67% human.

And yes, Frakes is an awesome director.
