Nintendo Switch Online* features and functionality have been added, including:

  • Save Data Cloud

    • User your internet connection to back up game save data for compatible games

  • The term "active console" has been renamed "primary console" in Nintendo eShop

    • You can play your digital software and content on non-primary consoles by linking your Nintendo Account

    • Playing software in multiple consoles has certain restrictions

  • Display of Nintendo Switch News articles will be limited to match the restricted software parental controls setting selections

    • Please note that the restriction will only apply to News articles distributed after the release of version 6.0.0.

  • Change the layout of the USB keyboard to the desired language

    • To change the language, head to the System Settings > System > USB Keyboard

  • Removed the following system functionality

    • After installing the system update, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user

    • General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:

When it comes to these "stability" updates, it's actually targetting the latest exploits for 3DS homebrew. They are non-specific and non-descript so as not to help the groups releasing / developing the exploits.

 

Or at least that is the theory :p Most exploits are closed after the updates land, but who knows if any other performances are actually gained. I don't notice any.

It's funny how they haven't bothered closing the exploits on the Wii U. I guess they have pretty much abandoned it.

This update patches the MenuHax and BrowerHax exploit as well, so don't update unless you have a secondary exploit installed if you want to keep homebrews.

      Dr. Mario World is shutting down in November, just two years after launch

      Back in June 2019, Nintendo announced Dr. Mario World for mobile devices and launched it in some countries in July of the same year. The match-three puzzle game followed a freemium model where you can download and play the game for free but partake in microtransactions to get in-game currency and power-ups. Today, Nintendo has announced that it is shutting down Dr. Mario World in November.

      An update on the game's website notes that Dr. Mario World will shut down at 6AM UTC on November 1, 2021. Beyond that point, anyone who boots up the title will be treated with a notification informing that service has ended and the game will not be playable. Similarly, in-game diamonds cannot be purchased from today.

      While the company has not disclosed the reason for the shutdown, Dr. Mario World had apparently been doing quite poorly in terms of sales reported by third-parties. This is despite the fact that it boasts respectable ratings of 4.6/5 and 4.2/5 ratings on the App Store and the Google Play Store, respectively.

      On the other side of the fence, Nintendo's Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Dragalia Lost are currently the company's cash cows on mobile. Finally, two other Mario-related offerings, namely Super Mario Run and Mario Kart Tour are lagging behind in terms of revenue.

      Nintendo confirms no new Switch model is coming anytime soon

      Around two weeks ago Nintendo added the newest member to the Switch family with the launch of the new Switch OLED model. The major upgrade in the new version compared to the original Switch is pretty self-explanatory from the name itself. Essentially, the new variant packs a 7-inch OLED screen compared to the 6.2-inch LCD display on the original one. Sadly, the rumors of a Switch Pro with upgraded GPU architecture and such have been proved wrong. In fact, the company today has confirmed that it has "no plans for launching any other model at this time".

      However, despite what many may perceive as minimal changes, there is a big upgrade in the price tag as the new OLED model comes in at $349.99 compared to the $299.99 price of the original Switch. This $50 hike in the asking price led analysts to estimate that Nintendo will be significantly raising its profit margins with the new model as according to them the upgrades like the new OLED screen, among other things, would only cost Nintendo an additional $10 per unit (via Bloomberg).

      Nintendo today has opposed this claim stating that it is incorrect. Here's what the company has said in response to the Bloomberg report:

      Nintendo however didn't clarify what margins it expects from the new OLED model. The new Switch launches later this year in October and perhaps those numbers would be more clear to us once the company releases its earnings report in 2022.

      27-year-old arrested for selling modified save data for Zelda: Breath of the Wild

      Nintendo is notorious for its copyright infringement policies where the company takes people to court quite frequently, demanding huge sums of money for violations. Back in 2018, the Japanese firm reached a $12 million settlement with a married couple who operated ROM websites.

      While there has been no indication that Nintendo is actively involved in the case, a 27-year-old has now been arrested in Japan for selling modified save data for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

      Japanese media outlet SoraNews24 reports that Chinese national, 27-year-old Ichimin Sho has been arrested in Tokyo because he was selling altered save data for Nintendo's massively popular 2017 title. Sho posted ads on e-commerce websites selling "ultimate save data" for 3,500 yen ($32). This item would include whatever perks, stats, and rare items the buyer wanted.

      The ad caught the attention of the Niigata Prefectural Police who proceeded to arrest Sho on Thursday for violating Japan's "Unfair Competition Prevention Act". Given the name of act, one could wonder about how Sho's actions in a single player game impact the competition, but it is important to know that his exact violation relates to "providing services to circumvent the technical restrictions" on the Nintendo Switch.

      The case is certainly quite unique in nature. Sho claims that he only distributed altered save data, the modification itself was handled by an accomplice, who is currently unidentified. Sho has admitted to the charges against him, and also revealed that he has engaged in the activity since December 2019, and pocketed over 10 million yen (~$91,000) in the process. The report does not indicate that Nintendo is actively involved in the legal proceedings.

      A sealed 1987 NES copy of The Legend of Zelda has sold for $870,000

      A few months ago, we learned that a sealed 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) copy of Super Mario Bros. has been sold for a whopping $660,000, making it the most expensive game ever sold. It beat the record previously held by Super Mario Bros. 3 which was sold for $156,000 in 2020. Today, the record from April has once again been broken.

      As spotted by The Verge, Heritage Auctions has now sold a sealed 1987 NES copy of The Legend of Zelda for $870,000, making it the latest most expensive game sold ever. The rarity of the item in question is described by the auctioneer as follows:

      Similar to Super Mario Bros. from April, it is important to remember that the NES variant of The Legend of Zelda is playable on the Nintendo Switch Online service. It is clear that the item has been acquired for its historical significance and potentially, bragging rights. Some of our readers might remember that we have also seen a mutated chicken nugget being sold for almost $100,000. Given that the previous record for the most expensive game sold was broken in a matter of months, we wouldn't be surprised to see the $870,000 figure being surpassed soon too. Humans certainly are strange creatures.

      Nintendo has added a new member to its Switch console line-up. Named rather unimaginatively, the Switch OLED model is more premium compared to the original Switch and Switch Lite.

      As you may have already guessed from its name, the latest iteration of Nintendo's gaming console comes with a 7-inch OLED screen. Considering that most Nintendo games are quite colorful, this panel type is ideal to render them with full vibrancy. Unlike the Switch Lite that compromised on its hybrid chops in favor of an affordable price tag, the Switch OLED model retains its ability to transform into a home console. For the TV mode, Nintendo has thrown in a wired LAN port for a reliable connectivity option.

      To offer more flexibility in the tabletop mode, the Mario-maker has made the kickstand fully adjustable. The company also claims to have enhanced the onboard speaker for better sound quality. The OLED model comes with 64GB of internal storage. Of course, the console will ship with Joy-Cons that can be detached and used for two-player games.



      As per Nintendo, the Metroid Dread, a sequel to NES's Metroid, will be the launch title for the OLED model. Of course, it will also have access to an existing library of over 5,000 games including Pokemon Legends: Arceus, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster.



      The Nintendo Switch OLED model will be available in the white set and colorful neon red/neon blue set. Priced at $349.99, the gaming console is set to hit stores on October 8.
