I was attempting to explain the basics, I'm well aware you have 4 downs, and indeed i said that on 4th down you can punt or kick a field goal, you can of course go for it on 4th down, but that usually only happens late in the fourth (but also on 4th and short just outside field goal range or just outside the goal-line)and I was trying to keep things simple so as not to create confusion. If you fail to make it on 4th down then it's turnover on downs. For a newbie on the game it's easier to see it as only having 3 attempts to get a 1st down, as 90% of the time if they don't make it on 3rd down they won't make another attempt, so I thought it would be easier to see it as having 3 attempts.
