Yes, if you would, do this last one with "Q329059 - Themed Programs May Stop Working During Long Operations" Unchecked.  It's in the "Recommended Updates" section.  I notice this seems to be where the updates stop.

YES!!! :p That fixed it! :woot: Congrats on finding the bug!

Does it need a fix, or just leave it unchecked?

For a quick fix, just uncheck it, I will post a zip file with two files in it that will fix the issue (just replace yours with the new ones). (Y)

I'm not sure if this is your answer, or another issue but...

If you compare the batch commands of the Recommended fix Q329059 - Themed Programs May Stop Working During Long Operations:

REN "%systemroot%\System32\dllcache\uxtheme.dll" "uxtheme.dll.bak"

COPY "%AutoPatcherXP_Dir%\ProgFiles\uxtheme.dll" "%systemroot%\System32\dllcache\" /y

REN "%systemroot%\System32\uxtheme.dll" "uxtheme.dll.bak"

COPY "%AutoPatcherXP_Dir%\ProgFiles\uxtheme.dll" "%systemroot%\System32\" /y

to the Bonus Feature UxTheme.dll Patcher:

REN "%systemroot%\System32\dllcache\uxtheme.dll" "uxtheme.old"

COPY "%AutoPatcherXP_Dir%\ProgFiles\uxtheme.dll" "%systemroot%\System32\dllcache\"

REN "%systemroot%\System32\uxtheme.dll" "uxtheme.old"

COPY "%AutoPatcherXP_Dir%\ProgFiles\uxtheme.dll" "%systemroot%\System32\"

You're renaming convention with the /y switch is different. If we do NOT check the Q329059, should we still check the bonus feature patcher?

Also, what effect would you have if you also choose to Add Self Registration to DLL's and OCX's under Registry Tweaks?

The "/y" isn't the issue (all the /y does is suppress dialog)... what's causing it, is when copying and renaming the files, I believe that it's somehow messing up the Installer for the rest. The fix is, simply, that I'll leave that patch as combined with the Uxtheme patcher only. You can also download the updated files here:

As far as the Self Registration... that just means you can double click the DLL and have it register, without having to manually register it (or reboot). (Y)

Another question or two - I see your fix removed the entry for the Recommended Theme install. Was that all you changed, and how necessary is the .sig file?

Reason I ask is because I have tweaked your .apdp and added a few entries of my own. It would be easy if I could just remove the [Entry] manually, unless the .sig file is crucial to changes. After all, we are all lazy right? That's the reason behind this proggie, lol.

Sig file is only necessary if you haven't manually made changes already. You can just remove it yourself. (Y)

Thanks a million, FlishFun! You have fixed the problem! I just did a clean install and applied the AutoPatcher from a CD and it worked without a glitch :D .

Thanks a lot for the fabulous job! Kepp it up!

No prob man, we aim to please. :D Just glad I was able to fix it for you all. :)

Yes, I would like to thank everyone that helped find the problem. I spent several hours myself checking out this issue. I waited until this afternoon when the fix was posted to start sending out the orders I'd received over the weekend. Thanks a lot everyone!!!!! :D

@rcblanke & FlishFun - thanks so much :)

I think that the invention of online forums has been a great boost to the entire computer industry. Think of how many things people have learned (including myself) from forums online about both software and hardware. It is simply amazing.... :D

Excuse my stupidity

As I understand it, the solution was to remove the option to install a Recommended Update. I assume this means the only way to apply this update is to go to Windows Update?

No, actually it's also applied if you run the Uxtheme patcher. (Y)

Ok I did a clean install of SP1 and I did AutoPatcher I did all the updates I just didn't do a lot of the tweaks.

... yes I added the Jan Patch before using AutoPatcher ....

My question is when I go to the windows update website how many updates should I have?

Windows Messenger 4.7

thats what I have seems a bit high but perhaps they are new... Also the Windows Message I told Autopatcher to remove it.

If this is normal I guess windows has too many patches :p

But please let me know if this looks normal.

I've included all the relavent files in the zip.

apxp_bonus_uid.zip

@Tambu - Yes, that is too many, but it's not the patcher's fault. If you see here, for example, in your logs:

Entry Q817778 - Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP:

Q817778 - Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP

Checked: False

Expanded: True

Unique ID: Q817778

Parent ID: XPSP2REC

Target (Keep Backup): AXPFiles\Q817778.axp

Target (No Backup): AXPFiles\Q817778-b.axp

You didn't have it checked... that's why it didn't install.

I've had a different error than what is described here with the Jan update. The Dec autopatcher worked fine. I've reinstalled XP (both home and pro) several times, then using the Jan update. A few times, the install will finish completely, with no error messages, and the only noticable difference will be two system beeps during the install (this was due to not having installed the soundcard drivers until after the update). Anyways, Autopatcher will finish, and right after it installs (I assume) the patched uxtheme.dll, the taskbar will vanish, and explorer will completely freeze and vanish. I can exit out of the install and it will restart the system, yet no updates will have been installed.

Now, the only thing that I can think of that is different, is that the Home install cd is an automated install, but does not turn off themes and the default wallpaper, and the Pro install, which is also an automated install, turns off the themes and default wallpaper. Could this possibly be due to me selecting to delete default wallpapers and all that? Other than that, the options for Autopatcher that I select are identical. Odd thing is, it happened on my Pro install a few times, but seems far more frequent on the Home installs. I got my system up and working fine now, with the Jan update, but I'm just wanting to bring it up for you guys.

FlishFun....

Cheers for the jan patch... what is the .sig file?? I assume that the other is the replacement db file, with the mentioned patch reference removed from it??

The sig file verifies the database is genuine (from me)... if you make your own, the sig won't match and it will report as a Custom Database. :)

    • Most boring game ever. Repetitive, empty, predictable, and full of cliches. Total waste of time and money, IMO.
    • Mafia: The Old Country expansion Man of Honor announced, brings back Salieri from original by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe During Summer Game Fest, 2K and Hanger 13 brought out a new Mafia: The Old Country trailer, revealing the game's first expansion. Named Man of Honor, this is slated to add two new chapters to the Enzo storyline that the game follows. There is an iconic character returning to the series with this expansion, with players set to run into Ennio Salieri, the future Don of the Salieri crime family. Fans of the original Mafia, or its Definitive Edition remake, may remember that name as one of the biggest characters in the storyline. This expansion is set prior to his rise to being the kingpin in the City of Lost Heaven. "Set in Sicily during the winter of 1905, Enzo Favara has proven himself a reliable soldier of the Torrisi crime family in the months since his initiation," says the studio about the new chapters. "Now, the Don entrusts him and Cesare with a delicate assignment of assisting Ennio Salieri, a man of honor recently released from prison and intent on reclaiming what is his." Working at Salieri's side, players will be heading into fresh environments as they return to the role of Enzo as a high-ranking soldato. The studio also promises brand-new weapons, fresh vehicles, and charms to collect in this expansion. Moreover, the expansion will add new content to the updated Free Ride mode. Alongside new collectibles and locations, this will add more challenges to beat alongside Salieri, which are described as runs that will "test the skills of even the most elite mafiosi." The Mafia: The Old Country Man of Honor story expansion will release on August 14, 2026, across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It will cost $10 for owners of the base game to jump into.

    • Telltale returns with The Wolf Among Us, re-revealing the sequel and a new remaster by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Telltale Games, the studio known for its episodic games from the 2000s, had a surprise appearance at the Summer Game Fest showcase today. The studio has gone through a collapse, an acquisition, and a revival but has largely gone silent in recent years. Today's sudden announcement was for the popular The Wolf Among Us series, with news about the sequel and a remaster dropping. Set after the events of the 2013-released title, the sequel will bring back Biby Wolf for a new adventure in Fabletown. This town of fairy tale characters is becoming unstable, with Snow White not being able to keep order as before. "When a brutal series of crimes threatens to fracture the fragile balance holding Fabletown together, Bigby Wolf, sheriff of Fabletown, finds himself drawn into a dangerous conspiracy that reaches deep into the city’s criminal underworld," says the studio. "As suspicion spreads across the city and powerful forces work against him, Bigby must uncover the truth and decide what kind of sheriff - and what kind of wolf - he is willing to become." At the same time, Telltale also announced The Wolf Among Us Remastered, bringing back the classic with a fresh coat of paint. This will include all five episodes from the original game plus over an hour of extra content that will offer behind-the-scenes videos, cast interviews, image galleries, and deleted scenes. The remaster will also have updated visuals and improved UI elements and accessibility features, alongside upgrades to the animations, audio, and frame rates. Telltale has been working on this project for almost a decade now, but if the new release schedule holds, fans will be able to jump into The Wolf Among Us 2 sometime in 2027. As for The Wolf Among Us Remastered, this is slated to release during this holiday season.
