Holy Old Thread Bump Batman!

Recommended Posts

I have purchased a plugin from the Invision Board Marketplace called Auto Lock Topics. It basically auto locks topics, and we've set ours for older than 90 days.

Right now I have disabled the automated message all these locked topics will get because we have over 980K topics that will be locked, and thanks to me not thinking a bit more about the settings, some topics were bumped to the top of forums, which defeats the whole purpose 😛 They are now silently locked, and when the task has completed to 90 days ago I will enable a message that suggests a new topic be started, or to contact a moderator for unlocking (in certain cases we will allow this, like for returning seasons of TV shows etc).

Anyway just wanted to update you all on why some old topics from 2001 might be showing up on your feeds.

Can you make an exception for bumps from the OP? So if I post something after 90 days to the "New Me" thread, will it autolock?

the plugin doesn't seem to have those kind of settings (unfortunately) that I saw from Steve's screenshots of it so if needed you can message any of us and we'll open it back up.

threads like that one are why I asked the timer be set to at least 90 days instead of Steve's original thought of 30 :)

Personally, I think older topics should just be deleted. Maybe the search function would work better then.

ya, lets not delete older topics. I love looking through old topics.

90 days since the last post i assume, not since the topic start?  LOL

yeah, some topics seem to be designed for long term, even if people don't post too often.  30 days would be crazy.   even 90 days is pushing it.

That's actually not possible with the million+ posts on here. Would take week/months to sort through all the garbage. Better be closed than deleted, easier.

At least you called it what most of it is, garbage. :)

I could see saving old topics if it was something that had to do with a computer issue or something similar and was marked as solved. Then it might help some one else out in the future.

Well XP or even 7 stuff is no longer applicable... BUT... It may be for just a person who's looking for help with older hardware for say, retro gaming.

But that old "garbage" doesn't really need to be jumped from 10+ years ago. Even IF they have a problem.

Alternating row colors in topic lists. Guests can now select light and dark mode in the forums (and on the main site). All of the forums here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/forum/58-real-world-news/ now show participation guidelines in full at the top of each forum. Outdated pinned topics unpinned. Relevant pinned topics that were auto-locked -> unlocked. Group colors for members in posts are now their correct colors again (thanks @DaveLegg). Removed dupe group name (text) from posts under the member badge. Enabled ability to post Anonymously in several forums (more on that below). Added a "Restricted (no Anonymous posts)" group in ACP for those who abuse the feature Beautified theme switcher for guests:
Fixed link color in Dark mode (see theme switcher menu in above image). Fixed our favicon (forums)

      Anonymous posting
I have enabled the ability for members to be able to post anonymously in most forums

As you can see above I started a thread anonymously, this will be good for a number of reasons, maybe you don't want your account linked with your political leanings, or maybe you want to leak something that shouldn't be traced to your member account, maybe you want to vent about your boss or company you work at without someone linking you to the member account (even though such places can't be accessed by guests). There are a number of reasons, however, do know that all Neowin forum staff will know which member anonymously posted, and it may not be used to victimize or abuse other members, if this happens warnings will be handed out in accordance with our forum rules.

Some forums do not have anonymous posting available, such as the entire Technical Help and assistance category, Introduce yourself > movie ratings, or anywhere where topic starters are specifically not supposed to be anonymous.

I switched myself back to the light mode theme because I've been tweaking it a bit. For example, we now have a light and dark mode switch that guests can use, and I've brought back alternating row colors in topic lists, plus it is the default theme for guests, so it must look great!

For some reason, it was never ported back to the forum theme, which instead had a massive list of white or dark topics.

Next up I am going to see if I can get alternating post colors working again.

This is a follow up to this change made earlier:

I have enabled a theme switcher for guests so they can choose between Light and Dark mode, and I have set the Light mode back to default.

I am going to work on it in the coming weeks and tone it down a bit, because it is rather bright!

Guests can find the theme switcher at the top right of the forums (this is also already possible on the main news site).

Not everyone is a fan of a dark theme, so we've made it more obvious how people can switch right in the header, it's in the same spot when logged in too and it will now remember your choice properly so long as you allow site (Neowin) cookies.

We will also do this for the forums, I need to first look into how to do this properly for guests since they don't have access to the theme switcher menu.

The main page is now set to Darkside by default, I did this on the forums months ago, and no-one complained

Every time I view the site as a guest I feel like my face is burning off

Hopefully with the darker theme new guests will stick around longer and explore the site a bit.

You can choose Orion (the white theme) through the theme toggle at the top of the Sidebar

Members can also use the member dropdown in the header navigation.

      I also tweeted about it:
Follow us! (we're also on Facebook).
