Darkside is no longer default on the main news site [Update]

Recommended Posts

The main page is now set to Darkside by default, I did this on the forums months ago, and no-one complained :p

Every time I view the site as a guest I feel like my face is burning off

Hopefully with the darker theme new guests will stick around longer and explore the site a bit.

You can choose Orion (the white theme) through the theme toggle at the top of the Sidebar

Members can also use the member dropdown in the header navigation.

I also tweeted about it:

Follow us! (we're also on Facebook).

After years of reading, I finally registered because there doesn't appear to be any way for unregistered readers to turn off "dark mode".

Are you really so hungry to add registered users?

Did the pictures up above not help at all?

I know we can't make everyone happy with some of the decisions we make but it is possible to toggle themes even when you are logged out

  • Steven P. changed the title to Darkside is now (also) default on the main news site [Update]

Light mode is now (once again) default on the main site and forums, thanks to guests now being able to select light and dark on the main site and forums, this follows after about a week of seeing lower visitation across the site, when light mode was set back to default on Friday, visits went up again.

Nudge 😛

  • 1 year later...

I seem to be seeing a hybrid of Light and Darkside on the main page, on mobile interestingly, where the menubar/sidebar (I'm not sure what it would be called) is dark, unlike in the forums.

And yes, I too prefer the light theme, since it's easier on my eyes (I tried the Pro theme, and while it is not quite my cup of tea (I prefer blue accents), it certainly looks like it's going in great directions (and I wonder how a variant of it with blue accents would gate against the standard light theme, I would like that).

Sounds like your cache is messed up. We do not have a light/dark theme and there is no sidebar on Mobile.

You should clear your cache/cookies for Neowin. What browser and device are you seeing this on? Up till a certain screen width, there's not even a sidebar on tablet mode, so if you are seeing that then you must have desktop mode enabled on Mobile.

I too have always had this on my phone but not tablet, so will try clearing cookies.

Edit

Clearing cookies and cache hasn't fixed the issue?

Edit 2

The hamburger menu on the right looks like a completely different menu on my phone compared to tablet all the options are different.

Bollocks I unticked desktop mode on tablet and now the menu has gone and I can't get it back so annoying, it's like my phone but in white, basically no useful options.

Edit 100

The menu is white in landscape but black in portrait.

So if I don't have a usable menu on mobile now how do I go about changing the theme if I wanted to? I wish I had the first image view back it looks perfect.

Edit 101 lol 😆

If I go into the forums the menu comes back and also it appears white and useful on mobile, so it appears it's the front page that's not consistent with the theme, is this intended or a bug?

It cannot be the cache, as I always have it cleared in exit.

Regarding the sidebar/menubar, I'm just not sure what is the correct term, it's the menu that appears when I press the hamburger button.

I see the same exact result as what @SnoopZis showing with what I can tell to be Vivaldi on a Samsung phone.

I am currently browsing via SmartCookieWeb Preview (prerelease version of a Gecko-based browser, so it should appear the same as on Firefox) on a Razer Phone 2.

Browser version: 17.0 (69)

Engine version: 103.0-20220705185846

OS version: 9

Also, for some odd reason, the Neowin logo at the top left corner fails to render for me, regardless of where I am on the site (the actual link to the main page works fine).

Try via the forum, it's white for me.

Thanks, although as I had said, it's also white for me in the forums, just black (same as what you showed) on the main page.

    • AltSendme 0.4.2 is out.
    • Simple answer is yes, you will still get the Windows updates and as long as browser is up to date, you will be good. Only thing secure boot does is protect you against boot level threats and make it harder to install other OS's. I've been looking into this pretty thoroughly lately myself as wifes computer has secure boot disabled plus my other, older computers that run Linux, don't have secure boot enabled. Have seen all kinds of questions about this on the Linux Mint and MX Linux forums. Just don't suddenly enable secure boot now.

    • AltSendme 0.4.2 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). Other improvements Private relay access control via shared auth token Relay fallback notifications when a custom relay is unreachable Broadcast mode toggle in sharing settings Android release build fixes (split-per-ABI APKs, universal APK preservation) UI polish: mobile safe-area insets, dropzone layout, transfer progress animation Bug fixes for minification-related serialization issues and system tray icon loading What's Changed feat(relay): add relay status functionality and settings UI (a120cdf) feat(relay): implement custom relay server configuration and verification (51276c7) feat(relay): add configuration for private relay access and enhance observability features (48fbabf) feat(relay): enhance relay URL validation, display connection status (d4fffa0) feat(relay): add RelayChangeGuard component and enhance relay-related translations (16ba514) feat(broadcast): add toggle setting for broadcast mode in sharing UI (ca6d977) fix(relay): correct QUIC discovery port, pin image, templatize fly.dev (52a2ba5) fix: More broken serialization due to minification (67491a9) fix(android): preserve true universal APK across per-ABI builds (e9f256f) fix(ui): conditional safe-area insets padding on mobile (1182f0e) refactor(transfer): CircularRing component animation fix (944572b) chore(android): drop x86 and x86_64 release APKs, keep universal+arm64+armv7 (34ada0b) AltSendme 0.4.2 release highlight: Modern Debian & Ubuntu support. The .deb package now declares compatible dependency alternatives (libayatana-appindicator3-1, libgtk-3-0t64) alongside the older Ubuntu 22.04 names, so it installs cleanly on Debian and Ubuntu 24.04+. Fixed settings sidebar header being covered by the custom title bar on Linux.
