Office apps are getting new icons as Microsoft reveals another redesign

Microsoft has a bunch of interesting Microsoft 365 announcements today, and one of them is a fresh set of redesigned Office icons.

Following the release of Windows 11 version 25H2, Microsoft dropped another pack of news for its customers, this time focusing on its primary productivity suite, Microsoft 365. In addition to the new Microsoft 365 Premium tier and increased limits on AI features, the software giant announced a redesigned set of Office icons.

The first signs of Microsoft wanting to redesign icons for its Office apps were spotted earlier this year. In April, Microsoft sent out emails asking for feedback about a new set of icons for Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and others. While no announcement followed, enthusiasts quickly came up with a fan-made pack for those who like the proposed variant.

Now, fast forward to October 2025, and we finally have an official announcement from Microsoft. The company is once again redesigning icons for Microsoft 365 apps, giving them a fresh, more modern, and 3D-like look. The previous redesign occurred in 2018, when Microsoft switched from flat and simple icons from the Metro UI era in 2012 to Fluent, more color-rich icons. After eight years of service, Microsoft is ready for another redesign.

Office icon evolution

Microsoft says that the injection of Copilot into its productivity apps (which is also to blame for the first-ever Microsoft 365 price increase and the new Microsoft 365 Premium tier) warrants a set of redesigned icons:

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the rest of your trusted tools have new life with Copilot, and now their icons will show it. The newly designed Microsoft 365 icons reflect a strategic shift in Microsoft 365 – unified, intuitive, and designed for flow across every canvas. As Copilot connects Microsoft 365 apps into a single, intelligent experience, the icons embody that transformation with cleaner shapes, vibrant colors, and a connected design system nodding to Copilot's influence.

Microsoft will roll out the new Microsoft 365 icons in the coming weeks. They will be available on desktop, mobile, and the web for regular users and commercial customers.
