Netflix is launching a new app called "Netflix Playground," which gives kids a dedicated spot to play kid-friendly games. This app brings in super popular characters like Peppa Pig, Elmo, Big Bird, and more.
Netflix said it is launching this new kids app because parents have so much to juggle, including cooking, cleaning, helping with homework, scheduling activities, paying bills, making appointments, and more. Playground aims to be a safe space where kids are "entertained, engaged, and enriched."
Today, we’re unveiling an expansion of our preschool and kids’ series, films and games lineup designed to fuel imagination and exploration for the next generation. Combined with our comprehensive parental controls, this high-quality, curated environment lets kids discover at their own pace while giving parents added confidence and peace of mind.
Netflix is pairing the gaming app launch with new seasons of animated shows like Trash Truck and The Creature Cases. Audiences will also see new episodes of Ms. Rachel hitting the main platform this summer alongside a new season of Mark Rober's CrunchLabs dropping on May 11.
Netflix Playground is designed for kids under the age of 9 and is currently available in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a global release set to follow on April 28. The list of games on Netflix Playground includes Playtime With Peppa Pig, where you can make smoothies, and Sesame Street, which features memory matching with Elmo and Big Bird. There is even a Bad Dinosaurs game that lets kids race a tiny tyrannosaurus and make fart sounds on a digital audio synthesizer.
Netflix Games has been around for about four years now, and in that time, the service has grown from the five mobile games it had at launch to over 100 titles. And some of these games are definitely not simple hypercasual "time-wasters." There are some heavy hitters like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that let you play GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas on a phone.
The service is available to anyone with a Netflix subscription via a dedicated "Games" tab on Android and iOS.
