Finally buckled and got one...for $550 thanks to a friend who bought a bunch during the crazy Dell deals :)

Got a couple of dead pixels that I really don't bother me but may still try to get a replacement. Other than that though, I fing love the thing. Games are handled very well in my opinion. Games tested: UT 2k4, United Offensive and Far Cry. Did not notice any difference between how the games played on my Viewsonic and how they play now on the Dell. Not sure what the hell others are talking about.

Even though I really couldn't afford to spend the money at this time (should have waited till bonus time :) ) I still don't regret it at all! I recommend this LCD to everyone, including gamers.

Congratulations! 2001FP owner here myself (no dead pixels from Dell) and if I had it my way I'd have three :)

oh man :( im depressedd.... like 5 months ago this monitor on dell.ca was $1500 CND, a week ago it was $1099 and now it is $989 CND which i think is amazing. I have a visa with $2000 on it im trying to pay off and a dell laptop on dell financing im also trying to pay off. I really want 2 of these lcds as my current 19" samsung CRT is starting to die on me, but i dont have any cash! :( and my job at the moment is giving me enough to pay off bills +put money into my $4000 debt with a pay off timetable of about 5-6 months... what do guys think? i dont want to do another finance with dell as i have the laptop to still pay off, my current monitor will last at least another 6 months and i dont have cash to put into this...

i can put the monitor on my credit card... or wait 5 months and put it on my cc then, and maybe itll be cheaper... i dont have a problem waiting as i might just get a new comp in 7-8 months and a whole new setup with a new lcd would be awesome.... but my luck is i always wait til something gets cheaper and cheapr and then when i try to buy it is unavailable/discontinued!

what do u guys think!? ive been going crazy over my descision all day! :(

Don't go further in debt man. Just wait it out until you can reasonably afford it, it will drop in price the longer you wait I bet as well--or be replaced by a better model.

My Dell rep just told me the 2005WFP was replacing the 2001FP, and the lead time on it was much shorter than the 2001FP. He also gave me the same $599 price on both. I guess you might want to hurry if you're wanting a 2001FP and this is true.

Replacing it because they want to compete with Apple's 20" but for way less money.

It seems odd that Dell would want to do this. The two monitors are not exactly catered to the same market. The 2001FP has 1600?1200 native resolution, which makes it a standard 4:3 ratio monitor. It has 16 ms response time. While the 2005FPW has a 1680?1050 native resolution and 12 ms response time, it is not a 4:3 ratio monitor, and is in fact a 16:10 (or for the picky math people, 8:5, but that isn't used much) ratio. This is a wonderful thing for widescreen DVD movies and for doing stuff in Windows, but I don't know many games that support that resolution, so I think it would be outrageous if they replace the 2001FP with the 2005FPW. The market is big enough for both of them to succeed.

Just to confirm guys, the new Dell 2005WFP Widescreen Monitor IS NOT replacing the 2001FP model.

"UPDATE: Dell has contacted FirstAdopter.com and said 2001FP is NOT being replaced. Dell sees the 2005FPW as a new addition to their product line as their "wide-screen" LCD monitor. The email is as follows -

The 2005FPW does NOT replace the 2001FP. It is a new addition to our product line. It is Dell?s first widescreen, but we do feel customers will still want a 20? standard 4:3 aspect-ratio monitor, so we are not discontinuing the 2001FP, nor will there be a ?firesale.?

Heh, could have fooled me--this is the 3rd time (I think) they've dropped the price in like a month and a half.

    • No, "a great deal" for 32GB of DDR5 is $50, not $350. I mean I see what you mean, that it's a decent price compared to what's currently available, but you really should put a disclaimer in this articles explaining that it's still multiple times more expensive than it used to be.
    • Linux 7.1 stable launch looms as Linus Torvalds releases the final release candidate by Paul Hill Linus Torvalds has just released what’s expected to be the final release candidate of Linux 7.1, rc7. The Linux founder said that this RC is not small, but smaller than recent releases, which is a good sign because he expects the stable version to drop next week if things continue on this trajectory. Linux kernels see a merge window for the first two weeks of their life, where developers add new features, then there are about seven or eight weeks of release candidates before the stable version. Typically, there are seven release candidates, but if more time is needed, then an eighth release candidate is released too. This week’s RC’s biggest area of fixes was for GPUs, with networking just behind. Torvalds said that the rest of the release was “pretty random and spread out” with some architecture fixes, driver fixes, filesystem improvements, and build fixes for more unusual configs. In terms of specific pieces of hardware receiving improvements in this update, we had more AMD Zen6 models supported and fixes for AMD SDMA 7.1 and GFX11. Hardware that got improvements includes Lenovo laptops, HONOR laptops, and MSI laptops. Here are the changelogs for those: ASoC: amd: acp: Add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 15ASH11 Input: atkbd - add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Air 14 (83QK) Input: atkbd - skip deactivate for HONOR BCC-N's internal keyboard ASoC: amd: yc: Add MSI Raider A18 HX A9WJG to quirk table ASoC: amd: yc: Enable internal mic on MSI Bravo 17 C7VF When the stable Linux 7.1 is released, it will be up to distribution maintainers, such as Canonical and Red Hat, to release the update to their users via the update manager. Some versions of Linux will get it before others, and some will never get it at all. Fedora and Arch-based distros will be among the first to get it, though. If you don’t get it, the security fixes will be backported to your system’s kernel, so you won’t be at risk, but you won’t get newer hardware support, which is fine if your computer works now.
