Uxtheme installation under Windows XP/2003

Recommended Posts

alright fellow neowinians...i post this guide about once a week for new peeps on neowin so i decided to make a guide for you all :)

1) hop over to http://www.vortex-scratchpad.info/reposit...atches/Uxtheme/ and get the uxtheme.dll for your windows built (note: open cmd, type "winver" without the quotes and you'll see what version/built you have)

2) then jump over to http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer and get replacer (it comes with a readme/guide so it's pretty easy to use)

3) execute it, drag'n'drop c:\windows\system32\uxtheme.dll on it, it will create a backup for you automatically aswell.

4) then drag the NEW uxtheme.dll file on replacer so it gets replaced with the new one.

5) reboot.

6) put the visual style files in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

now your themes should be visible in the appereance tab.

apply.

done.

i hope this guide is easy to understand. i made it for those who tried the neowin uxtheme patcher (https://www.neowin.net/downloads/uxtheme_v101.zip for xp gold and sp1)and it didn't work (doesn't work on sp2, thanks frease for telling me hehe) or for people who just don't know (yet) howto handle this little task or don't wanna use 3rd party software like tgtsofts' stylexp.

UPDATE: Neowin UXTheme Multi-Patcher 2.5.1 is out (http://files.tcmagazine.net/themes/thememul251.zip)

UPDATE:

Larneys Guide:

1) Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.dll.old

2) Put the new uxtheme.dll into C:\Windows\System32

3) Reboot and delete uxtheme.dll.old

also updated the links to vortexs' new domain.

edit: added a mirror and put up all needed files on my site aswell

thanks, a quick question...

where do I put the vs then ? I mean while using StyleXP, I just did "Add A New VS".

thanks again, great tut :p

see...i knew i forgot something..oh wel lthis is my first guide ever :)

6) put the visual style files in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that Vortex's site does not contain the UXTheme.dll for a pre-sp1 windows build 2600

i have everything from 2096 and onwards. the neowin uxtheme patcher works fine for sp1 and earlier versions..

you can get it here: https://www.neowin.net/downloads/uxtheme_v101.zip

images are down ill pm insanekiwi

those were just two screenshots of replacer, no biggie. it's all very well explained in the readme.txt that comes with it. i'll put up the images nevertheless when my personalsite is back up again.

i hope people are able to find this thread via thew search function because i keep posting links to my thread for people who ask howto enable visual styles under windows but nobody tells me if it worked out for him/her or not.

    • I can answer about the Linux bit. I only used AMD GPUs. I currently have a 9060XT (8GB) that fits my needs, I'm not a gamer, so I don't need that much GDDR. But lately, NVIDIA has grown a lot in the recent years. Oh, the horrors of NVIDIA drivers not working. But they have been getting better. I know a lot of members onm here that are running cachyOS and other distros, and are fine with a 4090/5090 variants. Really, though, I would stick with AMD variants.
