Dear Windows Update v5 Beta testers:

New Windows XP SP2 Build Available

Build 2162 of Windows XP SP2 RC2 is now available on the Windows Update (WU) v5 site. This is an interim build that resolves many of the reported issues in

Windows XP SP2 and WU v5. It is critical that Windows XP SP2 beta testers download and install build 2162. We are hoping for a large number of downloads

through Automatic Updates (AU). Please give AU a couple of days to download the new build before you visit the WU v5 site and pull it down manually. Please post in the newsgroup to discuss your experience with AU.

IMPORTANT Please read the following:

Build 2162 will be visible on the WU v5 site only if the following conditions are met:

  • Windows XP is the operating system
  • A special registry key is set

  • Build 2162 may only be installed over non-slipstreamed installs of Windows XPSP2.
Build 2162 is only compatible with the following builds of Windows XP SP2:
  • Windows XP RTM
  • Windows XP SP1
  • Windows XP SP2 RC1 build 2096
  • Windows XP SP2 RC2 build 2149

If you are using an interim build of Windows XP SP2, you should re-image your hard drive with a compatible version of Windows XP. Returning to a system restore point is also supported.

Rollback or uninstalling an interim build is not supported.

Please refer to the details link on the SP2 download for disk space requirements.

The pre-release versions of WU are for testing purposes only!

Please do not depend on pre-release versions of WU to help keep your computer secure and up to date; if you are not a Windows XP SP2 beta program participant, go to the <http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> site. If you are part of the Windows XP SP2 beta program, please take extra care regarding computer security, as you will not be able to visit the WU v4 site.

Special Registry Key

2. Log in using your passport.

3. Click the Windows Update link.

4. Click the Downloads link in the left pane.

5. Click the ssrk_edw.zip link.

6. Follow the directions for the download application.

7. After the file is downloaded, unzip it.

8. Double-click the ssrk_edw.reg file to set the key in your registry.

Once you have completed these steps, you should be offered Windows Update SP2

when you visit the WU site. Depending on your settings, AU may also offer build

2162.

Please visit the BetaPlace site and ensure your contact information is up to date. We want to be able to invite you to participate in future beta programs.

While at BetaPlace, please complete the survey located under the Survey link in the left pane of the WU section.

The WU beta team will continue to send out news updates. Please send content suggestions to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. now the question is, how do us humble enthusiasts who aren't a WU5 tester get access to that reg file so that we can update our SP2 build

If I attach it. I'll get into trouble with the mods. Won't I?

I guess you could always send it to me personally :)

Regarding getting in trouble and such.. I don't know. The opinions on this stuff are always widely varied. Personally I see this as okay, though I'm sure some of my colleagues would disagree.

hmm looks like some post have to be edited!

*edit*....oops...don't work....im not a mod... :p

so lets see.... build 2149 is compatible...but i need to add a registry key to get build 2162 to show up on v5?....

as i am not a beta tester(per say as RC2 is basically a public beta i guess.....er...)

Well if this needs to be removed go ahead.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\M5Deployment]
"XPSP2"="6E7EA86C-BBC2-476A-8C68-FA5474577712"

Save that as a .reg file using notepad and merge it to your registry. Run WUv5.

    • Anyone can now use your Instagram photos to generate AI images, here's how to opt out by Ivan Jenic Image: Pixabay Earlier this week, Meta launched Muse Image, a new AI image generation feature that lets users create original images, edit existing photos, and even generate custom ads directly within its apps. At first glance, there’s nothing that separates Muse Image from countless other AI image generators available across the board. However, there’s one Muse Image capability that quickly caused controversy. Namely, Muse Image lets users generate AI images using photos pulled from public Instagram accounts. As long as someone's profile is public, another user can tag that account and use their photos as part of an AI-generated creation. Only private accounts and users under 18 are automatically excluded. This feature caused significant backlash, as soon as the broader public learned about it. It’s unclear why Meta even decided to allow this, as if it hasn’t learned anything from Grok’s case from earlier this year, where users were abusing Elon Musk’s AI to generate explicit images of various X users, celebrities, and even underage children. If we can find at least one positive in this, Meta actually gave users a way to opt out of having their Instagram profiles exposed to Muse Image. So, if your Instagram profile is public, and you don’t want virtually everyone to use your photos with Muse Image, you’ll probably want to turn it off. Here’s how to do that: Open Instagram and go to your profile. Tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner. Scroll down to Sharing and reuse. Find the toggle labeled "Allow people to use your content on Instagram with AI features on Meta." Switch it off for both posts and Reels. If you don’t see this option, make sure to update the Instagram app on your phone to the latest version. The very existence of this feature is a strange fit with Meta’s own recent efforts. The company has been vocal about making its platforms safer to use, especially for children. Having content from millions of users directly available for AI remixing certainly doesn’t fit that blueprint.
    • Double thanks!
    • Zen Browser 1.21.6b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection. Automatic Updates: Keeps the browser updated with security patches. Zen Mods: Customizable themes and layouts. Workspaces: Organize tabs into different workspaces. Compact Mode: Maximizes screen space by minimizing UI elements. Zen Glance: Quick website previews. Split Views: View multiple tabs in the same window. Sidebar: Access bookmarks and tools quickly. Vertical Tabs: Manage tabs vertically. Container Tabs: Separate browsing sessions. Fast Profile Switcher: Switch between profiles easily. Tab Folders: Organize tabs into folders. Customizable UI: Personalize browser interface. Security Features: Inherits Firefox’s robust security. Fast Performance: Lightweight and optimized for speed. Zen Mods Customization: Deep customization with mods. Quick Access: Easy access to favorite websites. Open Source: Built on Mozilla Firefox with community collaboration. Community-Driven: Active development and feedback from users. GitHub Repository: Contribute and review the source code. Zen Browser 1.21.6b changelog: New Features Updated to Firefox 152.0.5 Fixes Fixed some localization strings not being translated in some places (#10749) Fixed glance being able to be open a second time when it was already open (#14460) Other bug fixes and improvements.
