Slipstreaming Office 2003 Service Pack 1

Recommended Posts

Introduction

Slipstreaming a service pack for Microsoft Office has the same advantages as slipstreaming a service pack for Microsoft Windows. The next time you need to install Office, it will already have the latest updates "out of the box" eliminating the need to update once the application is already installed.

Microsoft Office 2003 Professional has a total of 5 discs. I assume this guide only works on professional, but it shouldn't be too hard to get it working on other versions (really, just try the steps for disc 1 and that should work; can anyone confirm?). Each disc is similar to slipstream (so I copied and pasted, changing some things), but pay attention to details!

Prerequisites

This guide assumes you have the following tools:

- A working Microsoft Windows system

- A working internet connection

- WinRAR, or WinZip

Slipstreaming Service Pack 1 on disc 1

Disc 1 contains:

Word 2003, Outlook 2003, Excel 2003, Access 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Publisher 2003

(1) Downloading the update

Download this update (74MB) from Microsoft and save it anywhere.

(2) Extracting the update

Use WinZip, WinRAR, or any other compression utility that is able to extract files from an exe file. Use the tool to extract the files contained within Office2003SP1-kb842532-fullfile-enu.exe to C:\Office2003SP1\.

(3) Copying the CD

Unlike slipstreaming service packs for Windows, it is required that you do not simply copy the CD's contents. Place disc 1 in your CD drive. If a setup window appears, cancel it. Press the "Start" button and select "Run". Type D:\setup.exe /a into the box and press "OK". You may substitute D for your own CD drive letter. Once the setup comes up, use C:\Office2003\ as your "Install Location" and enter your CD key. Continue with the wizard. It will appear to be installing, but it is simply copying the files in a way that they will fit on a CD.

(4) Applying the service pack

Select "Run" from the "Start" menu again. This time, type msiexec /p C:\Office2003SP1\MAINSP1ff.msp /a C:\Office2003\PRO11.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb into the box and press "OK". When that finishes, select "Run" from the "Start" menu one last time. Now type msiexec /p C:\Office2003SP1\OWC11SP1ff.msp /a C:\Office2003\OWC11.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb and press "OK". Your updated disc 1 is now in C:\Office2003\. You may create an ISO from the files or burn them to a CD.

Slipstreaming Service Pack 1 on disc 2

Disc 2 contains:

FrontPage 2003

(1) Downloading the update

Download this update (74MB) from Microsoft and save it anywhere. This step is the same as in disc 1.

(2) Extracting the update

Use WinZip, WinRAR, or any other compression utility that is able to extract files from an exe file. Use the tool to extract the files contained within Office2003SP1-kb842532-fullfile-enu.exe to C:\Office2003SP1\. This step is the same as in disc 1.

(3) Copying the CD

Unlike slipstreaming service packs for Windows, it is required that you do not simply copy the CD's contents. Place disc 2 in your CD drive. If a setup window appears, cancel it. Press the "Start" button and select "Run". Type D:\setup.exe /a into the box and press "OK". You may substitute D for your own CD drive letter. Once the setup comes up, use C:\FrontPage2003\ as your "Install Location" and enter your CD key. Continue with the wizard. It will appear to be installing, but it is simply copying the files in a way that they will fit on a CD.

(4) Applying the service pack

Select "Run" from the "Start" menu again. This time, type msiexec /p C:\Office2003SP1\MAINSP1ff.msp /a C:\FrontPage2003\FP11.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb into the box and press "OK". When that finishes, select "Run" from the "Start" menu one last time. Now type msiexec /p C:\Office2003SP1\OWC11SP1ff.msp /a C:\FrontPage2003\OWC11.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb and press "OK". Your updated disc 2 is now in C:\FrontPage2003\. You may create an ISO from the files or burn them to a CD.

Once the setup comes up, use C:\Visio2003\ as your "Install Location" and enter your CD key. Continue with the wizard. It will appear to be installing, but it is simply copying the files in a way that they will fit on a CD.

Notes:

- In step 3 of each disc, it is important that you don't simply copy and paste the files. Run the command I gave you. Otherwise, you will end up with about 900 megabytes and you will not be able to burn it to a CD. Others have recommended a DVD in this thread if you end up with more than can fit on a CD.. but I personally haven't tested it and it all fits on a CD for me. (Note added on October 13, 2004)

- Copying this post (in part or in whole) without giving credit is called plagiarism.. I don't care if you copy this, but at least link back to this thread or write your own instructions. This took a lot of my time to polish. (Note added on October 13, 2004)

- All in one (AIO) CD's cannot be upgraded to Service Pack 1. You must use the original installation source. The all in one maker from xbetas is indeed warez in its current form, as it contains serial numbers. (Note added on January 15, 2005)

- Keywords for people searching: sp1 office 2003 office 2k3 o2k3 slipstream slipstreaming service pack 1 (Note added on July 11, 2005)

I'd like to thank everyone for 15,000 views of this thread. I can only hope I've helped 15,000 people. I'd also like to thank Larney for all of his hard work and helpfulness in this thread. :)

I just want to add (with a new post, so it's more noticable) that I apologize for the size of my post, but slipstreaming a service pack on 5 cd's isn't going to be short ;)

The content is mostly the same, but it's the links, commands, and files that change each CD

warez?

actually i just merged the 5 cds into one file using a utility from xbetas. i was hoping on slipstreaming the service pack from there.. slipstreaming the Sp's into each of the 5 cds and then running the merging util didnt sound like the best idea and was way too much work for me to attempt =p

You should note:

If you get an error on slipstreaming into RTM admin install point:

ERROR CANNOT FIND PRODUCT KEY SETUP CANNOT CREATE ADMIN INSTALL POINT.

Just run SETUP.EXE /A again make sure to specify a product key save to a new location and run slipstream again it will work.

got this error when i copied my CD to HD for slipstreaming. ( it was an admin install CD i made myself with Product Key in it)

maybe it got the read-only attrib, in any case i was surprised it let's you recreate the Admin point using the decompressed files.

1 more note:

you might want to add instructions for updating the web componants of Disc 4 Project.

For those that want to do a slipstream AIO, you're going to have to slipstream the individual discs as per the instructions, then run the AIO utility again. Pretty simple, works a treat - I did it myself. The ISO is a touch bigger, but still small enough to fit on one CD.

I've been meaning to ask this actually but never got the chance till now.

How could I slisptream SP1 onto a image that has an admin installation point created already from when I slipstreamed a few hotfixes?

Instead of running setup /a you could copy the cd contents to your hard drive, slipstream the SP and write everything to a new CD-R.

    • I gave up on browser ad-blocking extensions a few years ago, replaced them with Adguard. Not perfect but overhaul is a nice app that does the job on both Windows and Android with the respective versions.

When they kill that we get to watch Firefox and Brave get a boost in user market share.
    • Block by DNS ad blocker! I dare you! I will even layer unlock Origin, on top of my internal DNS, if I need to and I don’t even block ads today (I really should but this type of behavior makes me angry). I suppose I could also just be lazy, and add the flags myself, back to each release (it wouldn’t be that difficult).
    • Wonder what MPs have ties to these privacy/verification/data harvesting companies that are going to step in this time. Last time under the Tories half the cabinet had fingers in the pies, heck even the PM and his wife at the time was working for silicon valley, probably made a fortune.
