[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

No this is my plan, my mum goes to buy the hard copy, and she rings me and gives me the cd key cos shes gonna be home at 11pm tonight. So when i enter the key, i'll have preloaded it already. I could pre-load it before, but now I cant.

No, thats why i wanna pre-load, so when i get that cd key, it unlocks.? I dont wanna sit here for another hour waiting for it to download.? And in the options I get Purchase and Update News.

Have you fully preloaded it 100% at 4.21GB? Is there any shop near you that you can buy a copy from as its roughly the same price...

Try re-installing Steam? Backup your files but if you have no files there it MAY work. It sounds wierd as the only thing that has happened is that they have unlocked the game for those who have already 100% preloaded it and paid for it. You can always post on the forums of http://www.steampowered.com if nothing I am saying makes any sense or works...

[EDIT]You talk about a cd key on steam but its 1024bit encypted and we dont get to know our keys...it "pre-installs" everything or am i missing something here?

First try backing up all your files from Steam (google how to do this as you CAN do it in Steam). Then re-install steam and see if you can preload AT ALL with no preloaded files in the Steam folder. If not then try putting the files back into the folder and see

All failing just go to the steam forums...

should I let this finish unlocking and play for 10 min before work?? or will that just ruin my day??

^*(#@ it Ill play......:devil::

I played if for 5 minutes before college and it was sweet for me...gives you a taster of what you can play later. Its ok for us people with some self control(Y))

I think Goten is right. You have to buy it and you CAN'T enter a key into a Steam preload install as it just unlocks it and plays it VIA steam not via en exe installer or anything...

you see, I just thought that the hard copy installs the GCF files for you and asks you to enter a key. I remember seeing a cd key label on one of the pictures that a dude posted of his DVD-ROM version, which is what i will be getting, and im in the UK. I'll have to wait and see

Edit: Can somebody at least tell me the AppLaunch number for HL2? Cos if i launch it, it might start to pre-load.

You know that the HL2 is just using Havok's physics engine like many other games, right?

So nothing special. In the sence that it wasn't Valve that developed it

And here's a list of all the games using Havok's engine:

But it's the crisp graphics and the hype that Half-Life fans are giving, that makes HL2 stand out.

The GCF files are encrytped and each Steam account has its own ENCRYPTED key in them. Thats the whole point of steam, you dont install the game manually, it does it for you.

Elite_graphix, congrats and nice deal! I might buy the DVD version as a backup, never know when it will come in handy, and come on UK people :D

Instead of being one of those who starts a new thread, I thought I'd ask here :)

SUBSCRIPTION PENDING - Steam Server Down

I just bought the retail HL2 from Tescos, installed fine, registered fine, inputted my serial key...and then their servers appear down. Here's the message I received:

"Your subscription to Half-Life 2 Retail Standard has not been completed, because Steam servers are currently unable to process the transaction.

You won't be able to play Half-Life 2 Retail Standard until the subscription process is complete. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. The Steam team is working to rectify this situation, and will notify you as soon as the transaction is complete."

As you see from the screenshot all buttons are disabled :'( (so I guess I have to wait):

HAHA, i wish I could use that excuse for college :p

DjmUK, probably just the servers being overloaded, I mean they were extremely busy this morning with preloading alone so the amount of people registereing over the day will im sure undoubtably take some time....

    • I can answer about the Linux bit. I only used AMD GPUs. I currently have a 9060XT (8GB) that fits my needs, I'm not a gamer, so I don't need that much GDDR. But lately, NVIDIA has grown a lot in the recent years. Oh, the horrors of NVIDIA drivers not working. But they have been getting better. I know a lot of members onm here that are running cachyOS and other distros, and are fine with a 4090/5090 variants. Really, though, I would stick with AMD variants.
    • Everything they say you can already do yourself on the registry by changing some things.
    • Artist's renderings are so much nicer to view than the real thing, don't you think?
