Is it mandatory to have login to Steam in order to play this game? I was thinking if I could install one copy of HL2 onto two of my PCs and play single-player mode for both of them. Is it possible?

Unfortunately yes, you have to create a Steam account, register your serial with them before the game is unlocked and made playable both online & offline.

P.S.

There is NOT an unblocker program, that program that is going around is confirmed to be a Trojan (stealing your registration codes):

But Valve mentioned that gamers will only have to authenticate the game once and be able to play the game in "Offline mode" which I suppose is not logged into the Steam network.

If this is so, I can authenticate it on PC One first, and then authenticate it on PC Two.

That was my theory...but the only problem I forsee is that, once installed/registered/unlocked on both machines, can both machines play online at the same time?

I'm sure that both PCs will not be able to play online at the same time. One Steam account can only be used by one connection at a time. If a second user logs in, the concurrent user will be kicked out of the network.

My brother wants to play it too, but I can't afford to spend so much on another copy of HL2. :(

In the same position as I am then. Oh well, that'll teach him to buy his own games ;) (then again I could get it for him for Xmas - can't think of anything else)
