[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

I'm already stuck and soooo frustrated (I hate that).

I'm afraid to ask because it might be considered 'spoilers', let's just say (Route Kanal, Hole, Barrels-Barrels...Configuration???) really good game (good music), but when I'm stuck at the same section for a long time I'm not happy.

I think they made a statement saying the multiplayer side will be just CS: Source, cant remember. Will try and find it when i get home

I think you may be right about the CS: Source statement. However, what are they going to do about the netcode and HAX?

Is there a reason, they don't use Punkbuster to eliminate most of the cheating, hacking, etc?

I know nothing is foolproof, but PB would be a start at least. That's the reason I never got interested in CS in the first place, too much cheating that just ruins the game.

ok... i brought the retail dvd copy... go to install it and the installler says 'can't find the file hl2.ico1 in 'hl24.cab'.....

a quick scan of the dvd reveals this file is in hl25.cab!!! what the hell can i do? it wont let me specify where the file is, and then it just uninstalls everything.... ideas?!?!!?

Admittedly a newbie question as I noticed HL2 was ready to go this morning, fired it up for about 2 minutes, then had to head in to work.....

I noticed that there is no multiplayer "button" just new game.

Am I to believe that CS:Source is basically the multiplayer HL2?  Are we not going to get multiplayer Gordon???!!!!

If CS: Source is the answer, am I the only one who thinks the graphics of CS: Source are great, but the netcode blows major chunks???

I thought Valve was going to stop all the cheating with HL2 multiplayer.  CS:Source is already full of wallhack, aimbot, etc.....

Also, if there is supposed to be HL2 multiplayer besides CS:Source does it use the same crappy netcode?

After two weeks of CS:Source, I am already very tired of the crappy multiplayer experience.  Again, the graphics are great, but the lag, shooting through walls, HAX, etc. just sucks.  Call of Duty, UT2K4, etc. the list goes on....there are so many games with much better multiplay code.  I had high hopes for HL2 multiplayer.  Please tell me I'm missing something here.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Cs:Source isnt using the new anti-cheat system right?

this might be a stupid idea, but you could copy the entire dvd to the hard drive, and install it

when it gives you the error, rename hl24.cab to hl24.cab1, rename hl25.cab to hl24.cab, click retry.

theoretically, it should copy this file now, but complain about other files that were originally in hl24.cab. then rename the files back, and proceed. hopefully, this is the only file which will be problematic.

alternatively, contact valve tech support, or ask the store to replace the dvd media, as it may be scratched, or otherwise damaged

hope this helps

Ah barrels! I got stuck there for like.. 45min. Go follow the pipe into the other room. Look down near the water, turn valve. Go back out, down ladder, across, break boards (whisper whisper).. :shifty:.. PM me if you want.

Thank you, I'll do that in a minute after sorting something out. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who got stuck on that section ;)

    • Microsoft wants to end printer driver headaches with Windows Ready Print by Usama Jawad A few days ago, Microsoft released Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8553, bringing a ton of enhancements such as Start menu customization, search improvements, Taskbar polish, and other minor UI tweaks. Another relatively major enhancement snuck deep within the change log was related to upgrades to the Windows printing experience. Now, Microsoft has shared more details about these benefits. For starters, Microsoft has renamed its Modern Print Platform to Windows Ready Print. The company believes that this name highlights its shift in strategy, which now focuses on modernizing, securing, and streamlining the printing experience for Windows devices. Some of the upgrades present in Windows Ready Print have already been seeded to customers and partners. This includes ending support for third-party printer drivers via Windows Update and transitioning towards the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and the native Windows IPP printer driver. In line with these changes, new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print on eligible devices starting from July 2026. However, Microsoft recognizes that not all environments will be able to migrate to this platform immediately, so it will allow users to choose between installing the printer via Windows Ready Print or the traditional OEM process. Users will be able to toggle this configuration through Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners > Printer preferences. This control applies only to new printer installations, and its functionality can also be modified via Group Policy as follows: Launch Group Policy Editor Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers Find and select 'Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking' -> double click to open it Select 'Enabled' (if you wish to enable Windows Ready Print driver selection) or 'Disabled' (if you wish to explicitly disable Windows Ready Print driver selection). Select Apply Select OK Similarly, if you set up Windows protected print mode through the same setting in Windows 11, it will also default to using Windows Ready Print exclusively. Microsoft hopes that these improvements will help eradicate dependency on OEM-specific driver installation processes and simplify printer installations. We'll likely find out more about other tangible benefits in the coming months.
    • Hey what's about the proton vpn firefox extension ? It's not working today
    • On what though? Not Ray Tracing.
    • Agreed, but now my muscle memory immediately creates a layer for each text portion, so editing is made a little easier.
    • Happy for him, it is one of the first apps I install on a new Windows machine, been using it for years!
