[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Funny story,

I'm at university, and the only way we can acess the internet is via a proxy. Mostly this is all well and good, but as you can see, I bought HL2 today, with a friend. We couldn't get steam to connect via the proxy, so:

We drove 70 miles to my house to try it on the net there.

It didn't work.

Well, that's not strictly true, my friend managed to get his registered, but it "wont work in offline mode" my copy failed to register at all.

So, with much anger we drove 70 miles back.

Has anyone got a clue how you can get steam to work through a proxy? Or possibly a workaround to this problem?

At the moment, i'm feeling highly frustrated and angry with valve and sierra. I paid ?55 ($100 + ) for this game (inc petrol) and it still doesn't work. I actually could file a lawsuit.

i remember seing HL2 icons on wincustomize if thats what your looking for

Can someone post the icon for the Half-life 2 CD(s) please? I would like them for my steam backup DVD.

Please PM me the link (or i'll give you my email).

Cheers.

hmmmm, it seems the people who have it working easiest and best bought it through steam and pre-loaded it.... and we also have some extra shelf space too!

It also works for the people with brains. :ninja:

but why does steam hog my cpu usage for 4mins before proceeding to the next step?

probly cos its un-encoding the files... :p

I have never completed HL. Think I should finish it before I get going on HL2?

yes... even if its on cheats :p that way u'll meet all the characters and stuff... and make sure u play it on software emulation mode, not D3D or openGL... then u'll see it "as it is/was meant to be played... then" :p ;)

You cannot turn off page files.  You can only turn off Windows ability to intellgently manage.  Your hard drive will ALWAYS be paged to even with page management off.

So if I go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Advanced > No Paging File, you're telling me there is still a paging file?

    • "...a low price of just $340..." I don't think it means what you think it means.

    • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.
    • It's a local account with the ability to reset a password at a very base level. I really don't get the issue that gets whipped up around it But you do you
