[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

Oh, and if you haven't figured this out already, Barney is The G-Man because the same guy voices them both: Mike Shapiro. I found that out awhile ago actually, but I was pretty shocked to hear it because they sound totally different to me.

this better be a really bad joke or imma jack you up.

Having only recently done a personal comparison between HL & HLS, I have to say that the textures have been worked on quite a bit.  No mega improvement ala CS/CS:S, but still better than the original.

Ah, you're right. The area I was playing initially had virtually identical textures, but I notice the difference now in the earlier parts of the game. My bad!

i don't think he meant the same character in the game, just the same guy voicing them, kinda like how seth mcfarlan voices like half of family guy :)

yeah and just recently i realized who does the voice for meg. jackie from that 70's show!

haha not sure if this is been posted but from penny-arcade:

I wonder if thats possible :p hahaha. I just kept on doing it on Combine soldiers, so its just really fun. Though I have to wonder, you're invincible through the first parts of the game. Maybe G Man gave you special powers before you put on the HEV suit.

wow what a dork... theres an option to take that off....

This game has just really tried my patients. First it took over 45 minuets to get in the game AFTER it was already off the CDs. It spends a minuet every time I start the game looking for an internet connection before I can say "play offline!" They are just really screwing over the people who actually payed for the game.

that's like one of the first things i tried. i was picking stuff up and chucking it at the combine soldiers. didn't do much though. they just ignored me o_O

You must have a very good reputation with Dr. Breen :ninja:

They attacked me with their sticks!!! But I enjoyed that... I never died :p Try a briefcase next time. Or maybe its a combine was blocking the path or something - They dont move but take out their baton instead... If you want some fun, try jumping on their heads :p

now that i think of it i was only throwing stuff at the combine that were blocking a certain path. haha jumping on their heads. i'll remember when i play it through hard mode :)

ok im stuck after the ravenloth when we first see the antlions, i try to get my buggy to jump over the bridge but it fails everytime., how do i go across it.

PS the physics in this game are unmatched. the car physics are even more realistic than GT or other racing games

I'm not sruprised milions of people are affected by this after all the game was tested only internally and all reviews were done by people who played it on valves computers :(

Millions? At best a few hundred. It only seems more because if you DON'T have a problem you don't post. It's the worst thing about official forums.

Uhh..what was all that

Would playing the original HL really clarify what just happened, i mean doesnt seem like much of an ending

and whos that guy with the briefcase at the end..he seems weird

i tried searching google for a layout of the hl1 storyline but couldnt find one

anyone know a site?

Audio problem still exists for me, I have yet to try any of the solutions in this thread, which I am going to so TIA for them.

I do want to add it happened for me with both my Realtek OnBoard AC97 sound, and then also with my Audigy 2. I decided to Install my Audigy 2 about a half an hour into playing Tuesday, without knowing or hearing if anyone else was having problems yet. I thought originally it was just an isolated experience for a few, which now obviously I know it is not.

Considering how many people seem to be having a problem, I am not sure how something like this could have gotten overlooked when finalizing a gold candidate... Anyway...

All drivers absolutely up to date, Hardware Acceleration on every setting from High to None, Speaker Settings in game from 2 to 5.1, sound quality in game set from Low To High, nothing helped at all. Tuesday was the one day I had designated a good amount of hours to actually fully play the game, but I spent almost all of those hours troubleshooting my sound instead (I tend to get consumed and want to find a solution when something like this happens, hence me installing my Audigy after about 30 minutes), so needles to say it was not a pleasurable experience at all.

Also it is not a graphics card issue, my 6800 ultra handles the game like a hot knife through butter. Just to make sure I also tried every graphic setting possible, and the problem still happened at 800*600 with low settings, which is incredibly below my recommended settings.

Hopefully one of these fixes do help, and I will post if any of them do.

It is making the absolutely most incredible game experience I have ever had somewhat frustrating and disappointing to say the very least.

    • Does anyone here know if these updates are integrated into the UUP dump isos?

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
