one. I cant play the game unless I have an internet connetion. I know there are some who say "most people who play the game do have one"  I say what about thoughs who dont?  Dont they have a right to play too? There sould be a way to activate the game off line. Maybe like with windows xp having a 1-800 number. What happens if valve goe's out of bussines? Yes this could happen! How will I activate my game on a new PC?
Logic says: official non-Steam patch.
Three. what happend to fair use? When I buy a game for Xbox. gamecube, playstation2, it's mine and can walk down the block put in my freinds machine and play. I cant do this with half life 2. I know some you will say why dont they come to my house and play. Well what if there PC is better and I want to see how it plays and looks on a better machine. The truth is there a million reasons to want to be able to do this. All completely legal. Ware are my fair use rights? I dont really feel like own this game.  I feel more like paid to borrow it!

Skipping paranoia central, it's called your account and you can login from anywhere with it.
the bit that gets me the most is that I play this on my laptop.... I can't play it when I'm not in wifi distance of a hotspot... this is insane.... also the bit about valve going out of bussiness is VERY valid also...
Heh, have you tried playing without a connection? There is an offline mode you know...

I agree with Knight1

I dont have a connection at home at the moment, the line is bad and i live in the country. The only place I get a connection is at work on my laptop!

That means that I can play Half Life 2 at home and my laptop wont play it!

I have been waiting for this game as long as I can remember hearing about and now Im told a cant run it!

uh DUH.. says can't play while in offline mode....

I for one do not like this system for copy protection for Half life 2.

My reasons are...

one. I cant play the game unless I have an internet connetion. I know there are some who say "most people who play the game do have one"  I say what about thoughs who dont?  Dont they have a right to play too? There sould be a way to activate the game off line.   Two. What information is the game sending to steam? How do I know that they wll not use this system to start collecting Information about what games I play, when I play, or start collecting other information we only learn about latter. So they can sell it to other company's, and if you belive that they wont cause of there privacy statement. I say you have to take there word for that. Since there are no laws to keep them from changing there minds latter and doing it anyway!

Three. what happend to fair use? When I buy a game for Xbox. gamecube, playstation2, it's mine and can walk down the block put in my freinds machine and play. I cant do this with half life 2. Finaly. Im my opinion My fair use rights should come first. Copy protection Second.

I know there a some who would say what about the rights of the content owner. Well

they do have some but the content owners are the few and they content buyers are the many and last time I hard. The good of the many out way the few.

Just my humble opinion.

I acutally think that steam is a handy feature.... especially since almost all my friends have broadband. HL2, CS:S, or other games like that take only around 1 hour to download, no installers, just play. You can always make a backup of HL2 on a cd....install steam on a friends computer.....and use that instead of downloading. Then, VALVe will stop online verification eventually, it is just to bust people with pirate copies.

Can I play HL2 on a pc without internet connection... it appears that I have to activate the game, via Steam??

I personally play my games on a dedicated system, and do not have a net connection for it... I am sure there are many people who dont have the internet at home who want to play this game??

you should still not HAVE to have an internet connection to play the game.

I am going to pirate it, i will NOT pay Valve for this game.

This will be my first pirated game because no other company has ever felt like doing this.

I am happy to pay for a game, i just don't want to have to register and all that sh*t that steam wants you to do, it's bullsh*t.

There isn't really a legitimate way of doing that I know of doing that. Most of the ways of doing that are illegal. I know what you mean 'cause I would like to have my own dedicated system (someday). Anyway, the point of the matter is that it's the only way Valve can try and make sure piracy doesn't occur 'cause if you register an account and you have an pirate copy then Valve can ban you. Personally I would connect to the internet for like five minutes and sort it all out unless Valve wants you online the whole time (I don't have the game yet). Alternatively, phone up Valve technical support and just ask them, that's I would do and probably about the only legitimate way of solving your problem.

Dont want to get into a "warez" discussion.. not the place... but why should I have to have a net conenction to play the game... there must be loads of people out in the sticks, or just dont have a net connection!!!

I read on a STEAM FAQ, that the easy way to fix this, was to take your pc to a friends house, or work, and sort it out!! I dont drive, so are they going to pay my taxi fare???

As some tennis player once said "You cannot be serious".... this must be a joke, surely!!! Does this just not give piraters more desire to successfully pirate the game....

I make backups of all my originals... over the years, replacing damaged ones, has cost a couple of quid... so making backups for myself is the only way to avoid this, I doubt the game makers will send you out a new disk, if your old one is scratched!!!

play through Half-Life: Source on Hard (without cheating or skipping story lines), then u have the "right" to play Half-Life 2.

sorry too many newbie are complaining about the Half-Life 2 story line, without even playing half-Life first.

    • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.
    • It's a local account with the ability to reset a password at a very base level. I really don't get the issue that gets whipped up around it But you do you
