[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

Recommended Posts

Here's a prime example of hype clouding judgement.

You haven't played the game and you're 'highly' disagreeing with someone who has.

Look at it this way.  Ask yourself, "what does the sequel to Half-Life need to do in order to reinvent the (FPS) genre?"

In order to do that the game would have to be astonishingly different from other games in the genre.  One of those games HL2 would have to be astonishingly different from is its predecessor, Half-Life.  While HL2 presents better graphics, better physics, a lip-sync system for voice and many other great features, these do not 'reinvent' the FPS genre.  They surely take it to a much higher level and set the bar for future games, but after HL2 comes out, the FPS will still be the same FPS we all knew and loved since perhaps the original HL.  I could see HL as reinventing the genre since it was the first to introduce a huge story element to the game.  Previous games had been only point-and-shoot fests.  Perhaps I'm just uninformed as to all HL2 has to offer, but I don't see anything that takes FPS games in a completely new direction.

And don't worry, I'm wearing my flame-retardant underwear.

 i think i agree :o

I really don't think there's much else to reinvent.

There are things they could do to improve game experiences like maybe voice recognition and stuff I guess, but yeah theres not much more they can do at this point till some really big new tech comes along. I guess you could say that HL2 is the first game to effectively use physics to enhance gameplay.

People bitching about online activation: shut up.

The internet is a requirement for it, it's listed on the box, and everywhere else. If you don't meet the requirements...don't get the game! That's why they list them!

I'm sure VALVe would rather lose a few customers, than lose hundreds of thousands of dollars lost in potential sales due to piracy.

Hey all, i realise we have a definitive thread however i thought another thread that discusses all the reviews etc of half life 2 would be good for people not familiar with the game.

Just post a review along with a link and a score!

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2/review.html

Score: 9.2

The score is lower than halo 2s (9.4) which i really didnt expect! Just need to wait till eight...

Score: 9.7

Wow! just want to play it now!! this is gonna be so good.. hope this isnt another doom3 though

but now we can throw up that link anytime anyone asks if it will run on their machine

Theres a minimum requirements list for a reason. I hate when people keep asking if it will run on their machines. Just look at that and if your computer is equal or above, it will. If its near equal, well, its called MINIMUM for a reason.

LOL. Sorry, the only reason they require the game to be 'activated' is so that everyone installs Steam, and therefore buys more Valve games in the future. The game will be cracked within hours of it coming out.

BTW: On the outside of the box it says nothing that you need the game activated. You have to open it first.

(sorry if this has been asked before) has there been any info released regarding backing up your steam purchase? thats the only thing thats stopping my purchase thru steam atm. If, for example, I format, I don't want to have to download HL2 2gb or whatnot all over again. Are you able to back it up to disc somehow? has there been info released regarding that?

yeah i believe the latest updated added a feature where you can backup the games on disc.

if i didn't have internet (which would be rediculous), i would simply take my tower to a friends house that did? Is it that hard to get on the net if you need to? Its required for homework all the time, but I find HL2 much more worthy. I mean, if you have the PC to play HL2, the will to Play HL2 you will most certainly have internet access.

    • Let's goooooooo! I've been loving the entries so far! I still have to finish Rebirth (things have been busy!)! Excited for this next installment.
    • "Revelation?" I was hoping for this episode to be called "Reunion". Oh, well... In a related note, the Final Fantasy VII compilation has received an EC entry, short for Ever Crisis. For those who don't know, it already had AC, BC, CC, and DC entries, short for Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. I hope it doesn't get an FC entry becaude that would be a freakin' crisis.
    • Uh, after intense testing now, 'Samsung Browser' is not the best one outside of 'Microsoft Edge' after all. Opera Air is that. It has "some" bloat, but it's far less than what both Microsoft Edge and Brave browser have.
    • Weekend PC Game Deals: Resident Evil, Mafia, Like a Dragon, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Weekend PC Game Deals is where the hottest gaming deals from all over the internet are gathered into one place every week for your consumption. So kick back, relax, and hold on to your wallets. The Epic concluded its mystery giveaways this week with another double freebie promotion. As a part of this, you can now grab Rogue Waters and Songs of Conquest to keep. Songs of Conquest is a turn-based 4X strategy game where you'll be managing a kingdom, making tough decisions, and taking down enemy forces in tactical combat. Meanwhile, Rogue Waters is a roguelike where, as a pirate captain, you command a ship and crew through procedurally generated encounters. The double giveaway is coming to an end on June 11. On the same day, Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks will join in as the next freebie. Another Humble Choice offer was revealed earlier this week, bringing a refreshed eight-game selection to jump into. The June selection is Octopath Traveler 2, The Riftbreaker, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, INDIKA, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, Construction Simulator, Hell Clock, and Overlooting to keep as Steam keys. The $15 bundle gives you all eight games from this month's Choice selection. The month-long promotion will come to an end on July 6, giving you ample time to decide on whether you want the titles. The Humble Store also brought in standard gaming collections this week. The IGN Live Bundle kicked things off with games like Control, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, Blair Witch, Rollerdrome, and The Last Campfire for $10. At the same time, the We Will Always be Here bundle carried in titles like Bad End Theater, Thirsty Suitors, Vampire Therapist, and Tavern Talk for $12.
