Apple to drop sub-$500 Mac bomb at Expo

Recommended Posts

Well, if you go read on OSNews.com, there are some horror stories where you may have a hard time to upgrade to a system with SuperDrive. Apple doesn't supply SuperDrive to system that did not have SuperDrive in the first place. Furthermore, for system with SuperDrive that requires replacement, the price can go up as high as $450+

Anyway, I never had a very pleasant experience with Mac OSX. Their hardware is not that great either. If you have a PowerBook, you would know that you can't open the LCD display 180 degree. I tried to do that once with my friend's powerbook, and she screamed at me like "noo! you are going to break it!" lol how ridiculous.

1) you can add an external DVD burner, or get a third party internal drive for MUCH less than $450

2) Almost all laptops don't let you turn the display more than about 150 degrees. So, how is that ridiculous? About from the fact that they aren't a Tablet PC, how is the hardware "not that great"?

Maybe because it isn't beige or black and doesn't have a mixed bag of Intel/Windows stickers on it.

Why would you want to open the display at 180 degrees? That's ridiculous.

If this rumor becomes true, perfect time to get the rest of the family to switch over, nothing more worse than hearing your parents gripe to fix their pc, because of a virus or spyware.

Would be neat for apple to make something to hook up to your tv, like MCE. Have a dvr then be able to edit your recorded shows in imovie or whatever.

so apple wants me to buy their computer that has been obsolete for a year for $750 and then spend $1799 on one of their monitors?

You can use ANY DVI / VGA display.

Plus, if you don't see the appeal of it, you aren't a target customer, so, Apple don't want you to buy it, no.

If you can buy 2.8GHz P4 machines with TFT monitors for $500 US, you should start importing them into the US and Europe....

My BenQ Joybook can do that, too, but in the 1,5 years since I have it, I never needed that 'feature'

585216321[/snapback]

Yeah, same as me.

Nobody will need that 'feature' unless someone wants to hang laptop on the wall like plasma TV. :p

Allowing it to open all the way could potentially keep it from breaking.  Its more flexible I guess.

Btw.. Thinkpad > Apple  :p

Nice troll attempt. Actually if it were open that far, it would be much easir for something to get wedged into the hingee, or for the screen to get snapped off.

It's also much easier to drop something on the screen and destroy it if it folds back flat...

I'm not trolling. Its not that big of a deal but I'd rather it do it then not be able to. Old old notebooks used to be that way. If for some reason you had to get to your notebook in a confined space where you had to see it directly under you or something it might come in handy.

I never knew apples were like this and am surprised. But then again I am not, considering apple's inherent inflexibility. But hey I'm not saying they are junk. I've not been around a newer one so I couldn't know. I know in the past Apple has had some problems with screens and whatnot. If I remember correctly they wern't even honoring warranty repair on some things but I think it changed when people began complaining.

So basically, because they lack a useless and potentially damaging feature that only you want, they're not up to par?

its not actually useless, as with any normal laptop, one can has to KNOW to what extent one can open them, and will otherwise BREAK OFF THE SCREEN!! with apples its a bit easier...you just push it back as much as you want, till the screen hits the table. anyhow, this is not really a FEATURE, nor has it got anything to do with the 499 mac...case closed.

I found two nice "concept - pictures", although nobody knows if this rumor ever comes true :D

Anyway, it sounds/looks quite nice, but it is not really interessting for ME, because I'll buy an iBook soon ;) . I need something mobile for the universitiy.

But "the new" Apple would be really cheap for me in Europe through the exchange rate (Dollar/Euro)

No. If I felt the need to get a Mac I would. I personally just like the choice that the PC platform provides.Anyway I don't mean to carry this out any longer.

It will be interesting to see what Apple does with this new piece of equipment.

Wow, I like that much more than current iMac G5.

If they make it as compact as possible, it will certainly be attractive to me.

    • Apple reportedly has a second-generation iPhone Fold planned for 2027 by Hamid Ganji The iPhone Fold is one of the most anticipated tech products expected to debut this fall. It will be Apple’s first foldable iPhone, ushering in a new product category for the company. While the first generation has yet to hit the shelves, a new leak suggests Apple has already begun work on its successor. Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claims that the second-generation iPhone Fold has already been confirmed, meaning Apple could launch a successor in fall 2027. The foldable iPhone is also reportedly referred to as the “iPhone Ultra,” though it remains unclear whether Apple will ultimately choose that branding, especially as Samsung is rumored to rename the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra this year. The leaker also claims that the second-generation foldable will feature a wider folding display while reusing the same screen found in the first generation. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.3-inch outer screen in a passport-style form factor. It has already been reported that Apple plans to change its iPhone release cycle in 2026 to spread launches throughout the year. Under this strategy, the iPhone Fold is expected to debut this fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are expected to arrive later in 2026 or in early 2027. Speaking of the iPhone Air, Digital Chat Station says Apple remains undecided about a third-generation model. The company is reportedly waiting to see how the iPhone Air 2 performs in the market, and if sales disappoint, a successor may never materialize. As we reported this week, the iPhone Air has not been scrapped from Apple’s plans. The second-generation model is reportedly scheduled for spring 2027 and could introduce upgrades such as an additional rear camera for ultrawide photography and improved battery life.
    • ahh yes the good old your opinion differs from mine so you are therefore insane lol destiny 1 had no agenda pushing and was a massive success of a game, if you clearly look online the team for some reason thought they had too many men on the team and went on a woman and dei recruitment drive and we all know how destiny 2 performed from then on in
    • The limited imaginations and business acumen of non-dominant players is simply that: the abject lack of creative business acumen. Businesses often want to operate in a financially-rewarding marketplace (free market economics) and/or exit/cash-out at maximal financial recompense. Money is their incentive; regulations are both their obstacles and their tools; politics is their means of influencing the marketplace. Google, in this story's example, is crying that AWS and Azure are "too dominant" -- cuz Google Cloud is not printing as much money as Alphabet wants (although it is still dramatically more than they actually need). The EU DMA should truly follow-the-money and treat the EU as its own sovereign nation in order to protect European market players: Domestic entities are exempt from market-influence regulations until absolute monopoly is achieved; Foreign (non-EU/non-Euro) entities are all regulated via stricter DMA measures whereby regulated partnership with independent domestic entity becomes the only way for foreign entities to 'tip the scale' for favorable financial remunerations. Basically create a dual-track aligning with China's foreign investment models. In my eyes, this is the only way to properly protect the European marketplace beyond the current dot-com/ai-bubble/social-media crazes.
