Apple to drop sub-$500 Mac bomb at Expo

Recommended Posts

This is not only a good move, but also a necessary move IMHO, as even with the astromical sales of the iPod this holiday season, I think Apple have finally come to the reality that the iPod is only going to take them so far.

When these come out I need to:

1) Take back the First Generation Single Processor G4 I gave to my parents last Christmas, and sell it for whatever I can.

2) Get them one of these little suckers as a replacement. Hopefully I will make just a little extra cash as a result of this transaction.

3) Then I need to sell my current Dual G4.

4) Then with the money from both, I will be hopefully have over half the money I need to put towards a Dual G5, finally.

All that for $200?I don't think so. I smell BS.

Nope - no BS. It's actually quite easy these days if you are an Internet shopper. Head over to Slickdeals, Gotapex ot Bensbargains - deals like this are not uncommon.

$500 for a 1.2 GHZ Mac is still overpriced hardware. It'll sell of course.

the specs are crap... even for a mac... looks like the specs from a 6 years old computer (apart from the firewire part)

Except that six years ago Macs were running G3/333's at most.

And x86 PC's were about the 500MHz mark.

And Macs had FireWire FIVE years ago...

What's needed:

- A PVR/TV-tuner card

- Larger hard disk (even regular DVR boxes have a minimum of 100GB these days)

- More RAM (256MB just isn't going to cut it for a Media-Center-like machine)

- A DVD burner

- A software frontend that will tie everything together.

Factor all that in, and you're definitely not getting a "Media-Center Mac" for $500. But you can still dream on. :p

LOL, why don't you try and find me a media center PC that's less than a grand?

Eh, I have a 1.2ghz G4 iBook with 256mb of ram and it's really slow compared to my PC (I still don't understand how the people with the older 800mhz G3's can even claim that they're fast, but they do anyway...). For surfing the internet and chatting, though, this'll be a decent machine.

Read my posts again. Did I claim (or even imply) that I could?

All I said was that it's unrealistic to expect a $500 headless iMac to be a fully-functional Media-Center-like computer.

Funny how some of you get so defensive.

Oh jeez, this is turning into another Mac vs PC thread.

I think its a great idea for Apple to create a headless iMac. If I didn't have an eMac already I would probably purchase one.

Yeah well, my point is that building a mac-based media center is cheaper than a Windows-based one.

Get some more RAM...that 256 you got is choking your system :pinch:

would you be able to upgrade stuff like the hard drive? 40 gigs seems small

585193182[/snapback]

Some would probably just buy a new computer rather than upgrading...

I would configure it at purchase. Plus, didn't they say 60-80 GB?
