i'm so sick of these threads poping up every single week. so here's the one and only thread you should need untill the end of your life. moderator can modify poll entries to update.

LOL, and that tells us what? Other than they know nothing about AV's would be a start...

Lets see their test virus listing, and see how they tested them, and why they rated them how they did.. Oh wait, they didn't. All they did was rate them based on who advertises the most with them..

PS: Symantec Corp *IS* better than Norton in some ways, but it still suffers from slow definition releases, lack of packer support, no rebased detection, and other anomolies..

Still not the wisest choice, and i'm shocked people still buy into the "Norton" hype.

Symantec Antivirus Corporate edition (NOT NAV Standard or Pro) is an excellent low resources virus scanner with very frequent updates, just becuase it comes from symantec it is an entirely different animal.

I chose other because i don't think Norton's Commercial and there Corporate copies should be included as one option.

I have used most of these anti virii's in person and would HIGHLY reccomend any Norton/Symantec products because they are off the chain good + user friendly. If you seem to be short on cash flow lately, AVG anti virus has a free version thats has was awards for 3 years running for catching every virus like the big boys :laugh:

Theres far far more to AV's than virus bulletin tests, and i'm sorry to tell you, Norton/Symantec just doesn't measure up in most professional testing. 4% packer support, no rebased support, means Norton at some point, is about the easiest AV on the market to "Fool".. Plus, its a resource hog, and has the slowest definition release record to-date.

eXtendia AVK is the tops, Kaspersky is pretty close, depending on the threat.

9.3% detection of anything thats runtime compressed with Norton is a SERIOUS security hole in the product that would take them years to fix. AVK has support for almost 1200 runtime packing formats (mostly all known), and Kaspersky supports around 800. Further, my personal tests, and most "Pro" tests, show less than adequate trojan detection from Norton.. Only about 80% range (as seen on this test). Thats horrible, considering with large samples, thats a whole lot of misses.

I'd like to add, the AVK they tested is not the eXtendia AVK (KAV+RAV engines), they tested the KAV+BITDefender engine german product, which has inferior detection levels than the US/English version. AVK is listed as 100%,100%,100%,100%,100% and 90% for dialers once you factor the RAV engine side, which is strong on dialers.

Norton/Symantec is a *OK* product, but certainly nowhere near the best, and in my eyes, someone could do *MUCH* better with that $45 a year renewal fee they scam you for. Especially when you consider eXtendia AVK is only $24 to renew per year, and BLOWS away Norton/Symantec in every catagory. So why buy into the undeserved Symantec hype?? :no:

PS: AVG isn't very good either. I wish people would stop posting false information based solely on "Opinions" and present more facts into the picture so people can make informed decisions. You could seriously mislead people by posting such things, and give them a false sense of security in inferior products.

sav is great

there is the difference

sav uses a lot less resources and is still up to date

it can actually delete the files or quarantine them while nav has trouble

many of you don't understand this: every virus scanner can find at least 500 viruses but wat does it do then?

0 deleted or 0 quarantined or only half succesfully treated?

u want it to find as many as possible and to delete them, fix them GET RID OF THEM, they are viruses

i use SAV, the javascript b****cks in NAV 2004 and the like dus my ed in. SAV makes my pc run faster than with NAV 2004 as well.

Recently installed SAV9 and found that it installed quite a few services and added a ccApp.exe to startup.

Disabled the extra services and ccApp.exe, works ok but slows stuff when just booted.

Is SAV8.x the same?

Ive always used norton until i decided to run a home intranet.

Couldn't install IIS, the installation would just freeze. Take norton off, and IIS installs fine.

McAfee 2004 is good, but no good for me due to its random subscription veryification requests. No good if a different (limited) user logs on as they don't know the info so they'll be no antivirus protection for that session.

Kaspersky Personal is the best I've used so far despite it only getting a mere 5.66% in the poll - I've come across no compatibility issues, it's real-time detection hardly slows down my PC at all. The only drawback is that the full system scans take ages to complete, but not a problem if I run them overnight.

:angry: I can't stand that! Why the hell did McAfee decide to do this? Or the fact that it won't update on accounts that are not Administrator accounts (an administrator can't always be at every system to make sure that they are all up-to-date). What were they thinking?

And Norton :huh: Why does people say Symantec Norton is the best when the stupid thing won't clean or delete a damn virus? When that new virus (W32/Bagle.aq@MM) came out the other day, McAfee had it on their website at 8:36AM and by 11 they had a fix ... Symantec didn't even have it on their website until the next day, what kind of idiots are they?
