First off, if you're using windows 2003 as a workstation then you like to waste money, or you're a pirate. Second, the updates to IE in SP2 stops the use of ActiveX by default... which, might I add, was available in earlier versions, but not by default.

Also, the majority of the users on the internet still use IE... and more than most want an update to the current version of IE. IE has fallen behind in features compared to the other browsers, and needs a new version... quick.

I would agree there needs to be improved bootup recovery options in case of crashed and corrupted ntoskrnl etc, because there are more and more people dual booting OS's on much larger hard drives. The process needs to be simplified because crashes are becoming more common place. Maybe the dual boot options could be made available on setup.

Lots of speculation otherwise on the crossover with SP3 and Longhorn, release of IE7. It appears MS has struggled with spreading out their products more consistently because of delays with LH and the lawsuits delaying integration of hardware such as Chimney. Obviously MS is trying to keep the public interest intact by throwing out SP2/SP3. If XP hadn't come out when it did we'd still be on 98 SP 25. As two cents on 5048 is its no more then a dressed up version of XP with a lousy set of speakers to boot. (none) but they had to present something at winHEC. yea, yea, I know Pre-Beta!

As far as the remarks about Opera 8. I've been using Opera for a couple years with no complaints. IE is so far behind Firefox and Opera I don't think they could catch up even with IE7.

lets hope sp3 does the following:

1:be more compatible with apps like sp1 was,sp2 caused many apps not to work right.

2:include ie7,.net framework,wmp 10.

3:include alot more basic but updated device drivers

things the sp should not be:

1:act like longhorn or feel like it

2:does not cost so friggin much.

i will not be going to longhorn when it comes out as xp is the last windows os i will goto unless longhorn feels like xp and such.

SP-2 was free. SP-3 will probably include those things.

Longhorn will be completly different. That's the point.

SP3 won't be more compatible with apps than SP2.

Why? Because it was neccesary to break compatibility with certain apps for security reasons. Some software was using methods it shouldn't, and that SP2 no longer allowed. It is the vendors fault for not having a fix out in time and using such methods in the first place, no Microsofts.

SP2 was bloated, please spare me a bloated sp3

didnt winfs get pulled out of longhorn to be ported to xp..... and avalon will be in xp soon becuase the avalon developer kit for xp was available aaaages ago for xp... also, i wouldnt be suprised if ie7 gets its foot in the door eather. if ie7 seals security holes then it means less bad PR for microsoft, which means more sales.

i think SP3 will be:

Media Player 10, as this wasnt in SP2

Avalon, to bring some fancy animation to XP, like in the latest longhorn build, maybe a new glass effect theme?

WinFS, again, to increace security and speed (maybe)

all the updates since SP2

IE7, a definate in my eyes if ie7 appears before SP3

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
