Just my humble opinion, but I feel that XP with SP2/SP3 and Server 2003 SP1 should be able to upgrade to Longhorn without any problems.

Win2K and below ...... *cough*impossible*cough*.

win2k is the best windows released ever by microsoft!

Windows xp is just windows 2000 with eyecandy and whistles and bells don't forget that

It also has minor improvements to the kernel (NT 5.0 to NT 5.1), upgrades to various parts of the OS that improve stability, security, etc. After SP2, WinXP underwent a major upgrade that puts it on a level above 2K in almost every possible way.

Yes. All they did was add the themes service and absolutely nothing else.

Glad people like you are around to clear these things up!

Well, it has never been supported to upgrade from/to a server OS to a client OS (or vice-versa).

Also, I'm sure upgrading from 2000 Professional will be supported, as Microsoft has always allowed more than 1 prior generation to upgrade to the latest. Example: Upgrading from Windows 95 to ME didn't require first to upgrade to 98.

Now, back to SP3 for XP, I bet most of you are wrong. SP's traditionally only have bugfixes. XP SP2 was one of the only SPs (since SP3 for NT4, IIRC) to introduce new functionality. I doubt they will do any of the drastic things suggested in this thread.

IE7 is a possibility, but I doubt it; Take Windows 2000 for example: SP4 included SP4 for IE 5.01, the original IE version for 2000. This is the same with most SPs. XP SP1 had SP1 for IE 6, as that was the version included with the RTM OS.

didnt winfs get pulled out of longhorn to be ported to xp..... and avalon will be in xp soon becuase the avalon developer kit for xp was available aaaages ago for xp... also, i wouldnt be suprised if ie7 gets its foot in the door eather. if ie7 seals security holes then it means less bad PR for microsoft, which means more sales.

i think SP3 will be:

Media Player 10, as this wasnt in SP2

Avalon, to bring some fancy animation to XP, like in the latest longhorn build, maybe a new glass effect theme?

WinFS, again, to increace security and speed (maybe)

all the updates since SP2

IE7, a definate in my eyes if ie7 appears before SP3

How on Earth could WinFS be ready and backported for XP when it's only gonna be in beta when Longhorn itself will be released, if there is any newer news I haven't heard it yet. Oh and I seriously doubt that any part of the LH Aero theme will ever be in XP

That's one nice wishlist ya got there tho :D

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
