My Wife and I just quit WoW, for Father's day she got my GuildWars (and bought a liscense for herself online)

We've only hit level 3 so far, im a Warrior/Ranger and she is a Monk/Mesmer. So far i like the game, but it's so differant then WoW / EQ we are still getting our bearings.

Any advice for newbies?? (i started to read the entire post, but 41 pages is too much  )

My main advice is- don't rush it! :)

Just do all the quests and missions you can so you can try all the skills and get a feel for them.

There are lots of useful sites out there too- guildwarsguru, gwonline etc. that have more detailed stuff about the actual game mechanics and character build suggestions too.

Take things slow. If you are used to WoW, play the newbie area in GW alot to get a feel for things. Do all the quests there you can find and make sure you get used to the idea of a party! Once you get past the newbie area, you won't go far unless you party unlike in WoW (and EQ2 etc) where you can *kinda* get by without a party. In GW its impossible, literally.

Once you get to the main area of the game, just have fun!

P.S. Where did your wife buy a license for GW online? I must be blind but it isn't on their website? My friend has been trying to get a copy for weeks but can never get one and if he can buy a license online, yay.

I think after you install the Client it asks if you want to type in a Key or buy a license.

I'm fairly sure that's what it said when i installed mine. Has your friend tried downloading the Client from their site and running that?

That's exactly how my wife did it, she used my CD to install. At the point you would enter the key it gives and option to "Buy Account" (or worded somethign similar to that). It opened a browser at that point and she filled in her info.

Money is never an issue (at least to me). Salvage stuff like crazy, especially if you can afford expert salvage kits, regardless of whether it will make items for your class or not. But don't start salvaging all the time until you're fighting level 8+ mobs, because salvaging doesn't yield much with low-level items. My wife and I have tons of rare crafting and common crafting materials stored up, so when we make alts, we have the stuff available for their armor.

Take it nice and slow...there's no rush. Being used to EQ and WoW, guild wars I'm on my second character and my wife and I are both 17 on our mains. Grinding won't get you much...questing is fun! In fact, if all you do is run quests, you'll hit 20 long before you ever finish them all. Doing everything together is REALLY fun too. I just play an alt if she's not around.

Glad to see another couple enjoys playing too. She never played WoW with me, but was always interested.

Thanks for all the hints.. with the amount of playtime we (dont') have we have no choice but to take it slow :D

So from what i read so far, it seems that the game changes drastically after "the seering"?? Which i assume is what happens when we talk to tydus again, and accept the quest he offers and warns about "not being able to return". We figuered on doing every quest we could find before moving forward on that one.

And i have a couple quick questsions.

Will we eventually get a bank? like in EQ or WoW? Is there a Bazaar or AH in Guildwars?

Yes, after the searing, things change a tad :p You are never able to go back to pre-sear, so yes if you want to complete all the quests there to level as much as you can (I'd suggest at least level 6 or 7 before you move on, some say as low as 4 and some as high as 8 or 9)

And yes, as soon as you get to post-sear Ascalon, you get a bank, its small though. But it is shared to all characters on your account. No there is no AH or Bazaar. But there is the dreaded trade (read: spam) channel for chat. You salvage items like what was said above, and you craft everything, from armor to weapons. They added quite a few things lately, like Rune traders and now Scroll traders. Runes are your best friend for now, as they will really help your characters in the short term and really in the long term.

Hey Loc are you in a Guild? I was Leader in my guild we had a Hall and all that jazz but we had strictly 8 players that can no longer play because of school and that. so now theres only 3 active members and we decided to go our own ways. But now that its summer im looking to get back into a guild PM on here If you need a Very Good Ice Ele or a Ranger. Those are my two classes. Invite me someone!

All the game needs now is an auction house, then it will be perfect. I have so much rare crap I need to sell, but I hate sitting in Ascalon and Lion's Arch shouting on the trade channel. I have two Celestial Sigils, but why is everyone so shocked when I sell it for 75k? If I sell it to the Sigil trader I will get 75k for it, but the Sigil trader will sell it for 90k so I am giving people a steal (they could save 15k), but they don't seem to understand math and complain that I am being an arse.

Sigil trader offered me 60k last night for the Hall of the Dead or whatever. It fluctuates. It's hard to get a buyer, really.

Its annoying though because people think I am robbing them. I am only asking them for the price the sigil trader will pay me. I don't think they understand if I sell a sigil to the sigil trader the price will go up significantly.

was playing with a bunch of posers today. You know.. those typical jocks with gelled up hair, they talk funny (if you ever watch Growing Up Gotti, you'll know what I'm talking about).

They suck. They were begging for bows, and they don't even know what ranger skill does what. And one of them is trying to scam people by making fake feedback for his friend on another forum (or two of them). I hate their accent for sure... (that poser accent, I think they're Italian poser, nothign againts the Italians here). bunch of them blamming soeme guy for activating a quest in the UW (even though we cleared up all the Bladed Aexes), they just stood in the upper level waiting for those squid to come and swarm them over. purely RETARDED. They call their friends with names (on vent).

Oh, and one of them argued that storm bow is the best :p (and called it sexy... umm.. yea.. umm... sure there loner boy). Here's the best part (of course I'm being sarcastic), one of them called a female ranger character with a disgusting sexual remark.

I can't believe I was in a group with them... I left the game right after we got killed.

I completed it a little while ago, but I'm still playing around with that character mainly (R/E barrage, conjure lightning etc, and I've got a E/N16 too), cause I'm still not totally set.

Did the Mesmer quest, so I might try going R/Me and going for more conditions, Echo etc....so many choices :)

Still haven't done a lot of PvP really. My guild's being a bit slack really- they're American (yeah I'm on the American server) and I'm usually up till they log off, but we're meant to be properly organising ourselves PvP characters/strategies as well as doing some more GvG.

Did my first real PVP'ing yesterday now that my E/Mo hit 20 (not ascended yet though) and while I've done PVP before, I always got raped. Well me and my random team had 6 victories in a row! It ruled! The opposing team in 3 of the matches got destroyed when me and another guy hit them with meteor storm buahahah! And 2 other matches the other team got destroyed quick but one or two survived (and couldn't rez hahaha) and then we spent 5 minutes running around like morons trying to kill them.

The last match, well, we got destroyed pretty quick. Heh.

First time I've posted in this thread, but I've been keeping my eye on it :p

I've ordered Guild Wars off play.com for ?17.99 today, should be here by saturday/monday. Only MMORPG i've played before is LOM2, which I played extensively but not for a couple of years.. so I'm out of practise:pp

If anyone else is getting this game soon, so they'll be new too I'd love to team up:pp

Right now, I know very little about the guild wars world heh.

Just waiting for it to arrive now:pp

I finally completed the game, completed my attributes (200/200), captured lots of elite skills and am slowly building up my Mo/N (Lv10).

The final mission was hillarious. A third of the way through the mission one player was being a prat and running off on his own (luring in enemies and causing problems); he died [when we had all pulled back] and I told him to play as a team, so he quit out - down to seven. So we're fighting around doing really well as a team, do the bonus and start fighting the final boss... BOOM, one of our team has a connection problem and drops out, leaving us with six. NEway, we work together really well and the final boss was incredibly easy - it was so gutting for the player that dropped... I talked to him later and he was so annoyed. I felt really bad for him.

Now I need to build up my skills, save up for the 15k armour (just for the sake of pride) and build up more characters. Great game, but I think I need to take a break for a bit - I've done nothing but play it recently.

Couple of questions for the vets here:

(a) Is there anyway to auto-acquire your next hostile enemy? It seems that after I drop each creature, I have to manually select the next one even though they're standing right in front beating on me, which quite frankly is kinda irritating.

    • I wonder how many are laid off for cost savings, and this being blamed on AI to make it sound less scary and bad, for a more positive "modern, with the times" spin for investors? Because Oracle is down 14% the past year. We're looking at a company struggling here. If AI would actually be working out so well for them that they can do massive layoffs, surely this would've been reflected the past year in their stock value?
    • AI is the beginning, wait until real robots replace more jobs, specifically jobs that require physical work.
    • AI is indeed eliminating jobs, and Oracle just proved it by Hamid Ganji There’s no question that AI has become the hottest trend in workplaces, and every company is trying to adopt AI-driven solutions across its operations. While some industry leaders repeatedly say AI won’t lead to massive layoffs, recent data suggest that AI is actually one of the main reasons some companies are reducing their workforce. According to Oracle’s annual regulatory filing, the company has laid off about 21,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce, amid increasing AI adoption. “The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce,” Oracle said in the filing. The software giant now has approximately 141,000 full-time employees, a notable decrease from 162,000 during the same period last year. Restructuring expenses, including severance payments, cost Oracle $1.84 billion in fiscal 2026. Additionally, around 49,000 Oracle employees were based in the U.S., while approximately 92,000 were employed internationally. Like many other companies, Oracle has fully embraced AI and concentrated much of its efforts on the technology. The company is also a key participant in the United States’ $500 billion Stargate Project, which aims to build multiple AI data centers across the country. When it comes to AI adoption and its impact on the workforce, opinions remain divided. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, whose company has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, recently said in an interview that attributing job cuts to AI is a “lazy” narrative. “The narrative that connects AI to job loss, for many of the CEOs that are doing it – it is just too lazy. AI has just arrived, how is it possible they're already losing jobs?” Huang said. However, statistics and recent reports tell a different story. According to Layoffs.fyi, 196 tech companies have laid off about 119,800 employees so far this year. Reducing staff and replacing roles with AI agents could become one of the most significant trends in the job market in the years ahead.
